Characteristics of a Mad World Unit Covered: Unit 9 - Characteristics and Contexts in Media and Comunication Learning Outcome 1: 1.1, 1.2 and 2: 2.1, 2.2 and 3: 3.1, 3.2 Project Start: 04/09/17 Project Deadline: 20/10/17 Project Aim and Scenario This project will allow you to develop a focused and in-depth understanding of the characteristics required to work within the games development industry, primarily how to interpret a live brief. By the end of this project you will develop a realistic understanding how you would contribute towards developing a project within the games industry, critically assessing your own strengths and abilities and the outcomes that you produce. Project Brief: An up and coming games company is developing a game that has an post-apocolyptic theme. As a member of the team you have been tasked with contributing design ideas for the game to establish how the world ended and what humanity needs to do to survive. There are many potential real and imagined causes of a post-apocolyptic world. Currently, the world is struggling with environmental issues and global warming through extreme weather conditions such as earthquakes, hurricanes and flooding. There are political tensions and unrest in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia that threatens peace and stability. A postapocolyptic world could also emerge as the result of a zombie out break, or virus that changes the nature of humanity. You will be required to submit research, development logs, a final piece and an evaluation of your project process including peer feedback. Your final piece can be in the form of: • Character concept • Enironment concept • 3D Model

Task 1 - Interpreting the Brief and Research Prior to designing your idea you must fully research potential post-apocolytpic environments and their causes. You will need to look at a range of resources from games, films, books, as well as real-life current and historical examples of potential world ending scenarios via news stories, or documentaries. You will need to: - Define what post-apocolytpic means - As a minimum you will need to research 3 post-apocolytpic video games, 3 films, 3 real-world events and 1 artist that explores this theme in their work - Develop 3 final post-apocolytpic scenarios for the game to discuss with the group for peer feedback - Final proposal of post-apocolytpic scenario Task 2 - Production & Problem Solving Having chosen a final post-apocolytpic idea to develop further you will need to pick an area to develop your design for: For instance if you decided to design a body suit, vehicle or related building/structure you would need to fully justify specific elements covering how they would aid and contribute to survivability of your chosen scenario. You will need to: - Research 3 relevant designs to help develop your idea e.g if developing a body suit you would look at NASA space suits as well as designs within Science Fiction - Produce thumbnail drawings of design ideas with annotations - Produce a final design proposal - Gather peer feedback on proposed design idea - Produce your final design - Keep a production log of how you have developed your final design and how you have explored creative solutions Task 3 - Evaluation Produce a critical evaluation of the project that assesses how well your research prepared you to meet the characteristics of the brief and how your design meets the specification. You will also need to reflect on your learning and personal development. EVIDENCE REQUIRED FOR ASSESSMENT • All written work to be presented in a Word Document containing your post-apocolytpic and design research examples, scans of your drawings, development log and evaluation. This needs to be named appropriately e.g A.Stark_Apocolyptic • All practical work needs to be presented in the most appropriate format for the software you are working in e.g 4K JPEG
