Exhibition

Welcome to The North Wall’s Autumn Season We are thrilled by the number of exciting shows landing on our stage, and the range of exhibitions gracing the walls of the The North Wall this autumn. There will be something for everyone in a season that sees us welcome the public to the Ogston Music School for the first time. We are delighted to be housing The Mountaintop by Katori Hall, the Olivier Awardwinning play about Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s last night on earth, directed by JMK award winner Roy Alexander Weise. We saw this stunning production in a limited run at the Young Vic in 2016, and believe it is the perfect piece to highlight our continued commitment to building The North Wall’s reputation as an intimate venue that attracts work of the highest quality. New Perspectives, in association with HOME, present The Fishermen, based on the Man Booker Prize-shortlisted novel; Middle Child share their intoxicating style of storytelling with gig-theatre piece One Life Stand; and Lost Dog join us with Juliet and Romeo, a wonderful blend of dance, theatre and comedy. In a new partnership with St Edward’s School we are inviting audiences to walk over the road to the Ogston Music School. It is an honour to host Dame Emma Kirkby who directs Dowland Works for a special performance this November in the Weston Recital Room. Towards the end of the year we welcome Once Upon A Time… to the gallery, curated by Blackwells Rare Books and Zuleika Gallery. This exhibition will explore the visual history of fairy tales and magical story-making, and provides the perfect environment to welcome back Oxford’s own Creation Theatre with their innovative take on the J M Barrie classic Peter Pan. Brought to you by the same creative team behind last year’s sell-out A Christmas Carol, this new adaptation will be Pan like you’ve never seen him before. Do keep an eye out for our co-production of WOLF by Lewis Doherty, which will play at the Edinburgh Festival this August, before returning to the North Wall. We first met Lewis in 2014 on one of our flagship North Wall ArtsLab residencies for early career artists. Our ambition for all ArtsLab participants is a continuing, meaningful relationship with the organisation - we are proud to be partnering on WOLF as part of our commitment to creating and touring new work. It’s exciting times at The North Wall and we look forward to seeing you over the course of the season. Join Dom as he takes us back to the day that his grandfather was lost at sea in a desperate quest to save him. This lyrical new piece of gig-theatre, set against a backdrop of 80’s synths and drum machines, is a story of adventure, hope and the urgency of living in the now. Inspired by HG Wells’ 1895 novella, The Time Machine, with a style reminiscent of alternative pop classics from Kate Bush and the poetic storytelling of Kate Tempest – We Can Time Travel is a playful contemporary fable for our times and a loving homage to the music and blockbuster movies that inspired a generation – from Back to the Future to Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The Mountaintop Theatre

Written by Katori Hall Directed by Roy Alexander Weise, winner of the JMK Award 2016

April 3, 1968. The smell of cigarettes and coffee hangs thick in the air as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. winds down from a day of preaching and marching. An intimate look into the quieter moments of King’s life, The Mountaintop chips away at the myth of the great man to expose his fears about his family, his country and the ever-looming threat of a violent death. Set during the height of America’s Civil Rights Movement, Katori Hall’s sharp and powerful play confronts the legend and his legacy. Are we really free or do we live in a world of false liberation? In the 50th anniversary year of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, this Olivier Award-winning play about King’s last night on earth embarks on its first UK tour, following a sold out run at the Young Vic.

“I’ve got that funny feeling again… it’s a good thing right?” Three friends embark on an exciting adventure to chase their butterflies away. They cross new seas to uncharted lands, on a journey filled with discovery. The only trouble is they’re all a bit worried about it! During their voyage the group ride the waves, walk high bridges, discover deep caves and climb to the sky, before reaching dry land braver than ever before. Join our intrepid characters as they step into the unknown in an uplifting tale of friendship, courage and facing your fears, told using innovative staging, breath-taking physicality, touching humour and a specially commissioned musical score.

Recorded by Neil McDermott at the University of Glasgow Recital Room, mixed with Calum Malcolm, mastered by Sam Smith and released on the Drag City label in Spring 2018, What News finds the trio delivering surprising, moving and idiosyncratic versions of eight traditional Scottish ballads, arranged for voice, piano and electronics.

Lost Dog presents

Juliet and Romeo Conceived and directed by Ben Duke Devised and performed by Ben Duke and Solene Weinachter

Dance

Lost Dog’s new show reveals the real story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well…they lived at least. Now they are 40ish, at least one of them is in the grips of a mid-life crisis, they feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy this duet takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity.

Hannah Robson: Seeking Form

Joanna Vestey: Conditions of Knowledge

28

29

Hannah Robson is a textile artist, interested in the spatial qualities of textiles. She constructs sculptural pieces using combinations of weaving and lace-making, exploring how threads can escape the traditional vertical and horizontal pathways imposed by the loom. She creates opportunities for threads to break away from woven surfaces, taking alternative routes and joining together in three-dimensional forms. She exploits the tensions between rigorously controlled constructions and free-flowing loose threads, balancing structure and chaos. A range of two and three-dimensional works will be displayed at The North Wall, including Ersilia, an installation commissioned by the Crafts Council, recently exhibited at Collect Open 2018.

Exhibition

Joanna Vestey continues her photographic exploration into spaces and objects that relate to the production and holding of knowledge. Best known for her large format interior images made in physical spaces of academia such as libraries and lecture theatres, these new abstract works, in contrast, are responsive to the fleeting and ephemeral nature of electronic media. Shown at The North Wall for the first time, Conditions of Knowledge explores the digitisation of knowledge and the way in which screen-based media and digital networked storage allow for new kinds of engagement. Through the use of both physical and digital forms, a space is created to consider methods of the past alongside future possibilities for the accessing and sharing of knowledge.

The Teddies Foundation Course provides Lower Sixth A Level and IB pupils an opportunity to explore a range of media over a sixteen week programme. Pupils are encouraged to choose a theme at the beginning of the year which their work centres on and teachers introduce pupils to a new technique fortnightly. In Progress 2 showcases the outcomes produced to date, approximately half way through the course.

Kelmscott Manor by Peter Lawrence

The Society of Wood Engravers returns to The North Wall this October to open its national touring exhibition with an entirely new selection of amazing relief prints. Over one hundred wood engravings, woodcuts and linocuts made by artists as near as Summertown to as far away as Russia and America showcase the wide range of styles and interpretations of which this art form is capable. Whether traditional or experimental in approach, these prints all have one thing in common: an astonishing level of virtuosity and intensity distilled into exquisitely rendered images. The SWE Annual Exhibition is always stringently selected, choosing only the best from a large open submission, but while standards are always high, prices can be surprisingly modest; this original “affordable art” has prices starting from £50 for a limited edition print, offering something for every taste and budget.
