Each Residential Unit is intended for use of one student alone. Total area (20m2+15m2) is the result of dimensional analysis of all necessary surfaces for basic actions, needs and states of a single user (sitting, playing, studying, dancing, bathing, relaxing, book-storing, reading, listening to music, sleeping...). Space is vertically split into two zones: day-zone and night-zone / lower floor and upper floor. The unit is fully transparent, but closable, with intention of optional visual connection/disconnection to other units of group. The idea was to connect the inner space of units with the outside space - the forest.

4 types of Apartments, designed to provide luxurious accommodation, are combined in 20 different floor combinations which are used to create 33 floors tall building. Apartments vary in size, from small (41.7 m2) to very large (166.1 m2). The larger ones are designed to have two separate zones operated by individual entrances. The intention was to provide separate space for different generations - children and adults, so both parties can have privilege of privacy due to different usage of space. Some floors are not entirely covered with flats. On the position of missing flat, there is created a common space of various purposes. These common spaces are spread through three floors the most. On lower floors, apartments can be organized into offices in which case the common area on that floor is accessible for the public as well as for the tenants. Security and control of access are managed with programmed elevators which are situated in the core of the building.

The aim of this research was to develop an innovative masonry system that can be applied in a contemporary urban context by integrating enhanced material performances. The proposal was to transform unused gas stations in Tokyo by building canopy-like structures over the newly emergent urban public spaces designed to host various public gathering activities and to provide an opportunity for citizens to interact with soil in an urban context where soil usually is not exposed. The design process is based on a simple physical production system fully supported by highly developed digital tools. The production system produces compressed, round-edged, differentiated bricks that can generate doubly curved surfaces when stacked. A major goal is to re-contextualize soil in order to propose temporary, degradable, recyclable materials as an alternative option for contemporary building materials. Use of readily available material on site eliminates soil pollution when inherent biological processes are enhanced. On a larger scale, by developing a temporary infrastructure which functions as an ‘Urban Soil Detoxifier’, the proposed design system has the potential to push pre-dating, intuitive, manual methods of application to a more intelligent level. This urban proposal focuses on old gas stations in Tokyo. This distributed network of plots that are small in size but high in number contributes to soil (and underground water) contamination in urban areas with leaking underground storage tanks.

REAL SIZE THINKING Competition 2013, 3rd place

Different brick design team was awarded in REAL SIZE THINKING 2013 competition when they were given the opportunity to build a prototype of the system they developed as their thesis project. Different brick is about developing an innovative masonry system based on simple production methods fully supported by highly customized digital tools. It challenges the non-standarized manufacturing processes through the application of computational design in architectural discourse. The production system produces compressed, round-edged, differentiated bricks that can generate doubly curved surfaces when stacked. The main goal was to construct the geometry without using geometrical formwork. For the purpose of the competition, team members proposed a doubly curved wall composed of 600 different bricks. Real Size Thinking 2013 competition exhibition was held at Shinjuku Park Tower Ozone Gallery from November 14th until November 26th 2013.
