By Michelle Davis

After seven years of writing and a lifetime of introspection and inspiration, acclaimed composer and performer Jeremy Schonfeld is ready to share Iron & Coal with the world. This intense, intimate, and immersive musical experience tells the story of his father’s survival of the Holocaust, their relationship with each other, and their connection with the past. This moving and uplifting work emanates from the artist’s heart and envelops audiences with its lush arrangements of rock-infused anthems, traditional Jewish prayers, stunning multimedia visuals, and a narrative that is as universal as it is deeply personal. Nearly 200 musicians are featured in this theatrical concert production, including New York City’s Contemporaneous ensemble, a rock band, and a youth chorus. Jeremy’s father, Gustav, was torn from his home at the age of 10 and carted off by cattle car to Auschwitz. Alongside his father, Gustav witnessed unimaginable horrors at the hands of the Nazis and lost many dear friends and family members—including his sevenmonth-old brother. Despite the odds, Gustav and his parents survived the Holocaust and were liberated, eventually starting a new life in the United States.

But the weight of his trauma was ever present. He spent a lifetime asking “why?” He researched the Holocaust and presented lectures on the topic, trying to understand what would drive a group of people to commit such great atrocities. Years later, he published a memoir with a title that suggests he never truly found an answer—Absence of Closure. Growing up with the ghosts of his father’s story, Jeremy wrestled with the past in his own way. While Gustav took a clinical approach, his son took an artistic one, looking inward. “I think my father admired my ability to get into the emotional,” says Jeremy. “There was a mutual admiration, and it was nice when he started sending me pages of his memoir to read, expecting and hoping for my opinion.”

Likewise, Jeremy shared his music with his father, including the songs that would eventually become part of Iron & Coal. For years, he knew there was a story that needed to be told, but he wasn’t sure what shape it would take. His work developed a more profound purpose when Gustav passed away in 2011.

“After my father died, I realized I had spent so much of my life not identifying as myself, but as the son of a survivor,” he says.

Strathmore presents the premiere of Iron & Coal, an immersive musical journey of a father and son living in the shadow of the Holocaust.

What followed was a journey of self-discovery, collaboration, and artistic growth. Jeremy recorded the songs of Iron & Coal as an album. Then he added new elements and layers to the music, including visual components and multimedia aspects. The first glimpse at the true potential and magnitude of this work came in December 2016. Under the guidance of longtime friend and acclaimed theater, opera, and film director Kevin Newbury, Jeremy workshopped Iron & Coal at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust, an incubator space for new work. Strathmore’s Artistic Director Joi Brown was in attendance. “The National Sawdust performance had so many wonderful moments,” says Brown. “It was then that I understood the power of the piece as a theatrical event and how the elements combined to create an inspiring and compelling onstage journey.” Newbury was likewise entranced by the story and contemporary songwriting style. He first heard the songs six years prior and was impressed by how the production had grown. “I haven’t seen anything quite like it that explores these questions through rock ’n’ roll music,” Newbury says. “I’m a total rock ’n’ roll kid . . . so I really love Jeremy’s energy as a musician, songwriter, and performer. I was intrigued by the story he was telling about this intergenerational conflict and how you escape the pressure and the damage of the previous generation. I just thought it was so evocative and expressive.”

Jeremy. “It’s as if my father’s character is writing the book as we are watching the show.” He also says that having the character of his father perform some of the songs has transformed the work and made it more universal in scope. Adds Newbury, “It’s a moving meditation and requiem for Jeremy’s dad. . . . It’s about how we escape the ghosts of the past, but there’s also a lot of joy in it.” Brown is proud to add Iron & Coal to Strathmore’s impressive roster of featured productions. “Strathmore has a wonderful history of supporting artists beyond the booking of touring performances,” she says. In the last three years, Strathmore has produced a number of thought-provoking events and curated projects, including I Am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milk starring Andrew Lippa and Kristin Chenoweth and the staging of Wynton Marsalis’ master work, All Rise. “Partnering with artists on new work in very large scale speaks to Strathmore’s commitment to foster programming that is as distinctive and magnificent as the venue itself,” says Brown. “It also demonstrates how the performing arts play an essential role in elevating our social conscience. We take great pride in supporting work that helps us reflect on history and bring fresh perspective to stories of strength and resilience.”

During a workshop in 2017, the creative team decided to add two vocalists alongside Jeremy—Gustav as an adult, portrayed by veteran theater artist Rinde Eckert, and a younger version of Gustav, played by up-and-comer Lincoln Clauss. “We are using my father’s actual words, taking his memoir, and sharing passages from the book,” says
