Actor-dancer-choreographer Dein Perry is the creator of the Australian dance phenomenon Tap Dogs, a high-energy music-and-dance show (think Billy Elliot meets Flashdance Down Under) that’s coming to the Music Center on November 24. Tap Dogs, with its six-member dance troupe, percussionists and fire-water-metal vibe, was inspired by Dein’s childhood as a dancer growing up in a town where the steel industry ruled. For Strathmore, Tap Dogs is part of an expanded foray into theatrical presentations; for Dein it’s about how art imitates life. Dein had this to say to Strathmore News about Tap Dogs. On the unique sets and staging devices used to give Tap Dogs its zing: The idea was to get as many different sounds as we could. Water is a great sound to create some quiet moments in the show, and the scaffold is just the opposite, giving us a huge cracking sound. Also the scaffold is fun to work with, so we can change the shape of the structure as the performance moves along. Veronneau
On his background as an industrial machinist, and his early introduction to tap dancing: Being from Steel Town (Newcastle, Australia) a lot of job opportunities were in that area. I had a choice of four different trades to learn, and chose Industrial Machinist. And my mum took me to a tap school at four years old so I can’t really remember not doing it. Mum loves tap dance and didn’t have the opportunity when she was young, but she now taps every week and loves it. On the way Tap Dogs has inspired the young people who come to see it: I know it has had an effect because we have a Tap school at Bondi Beach in Sydney with about 250 students and more than 200 of them are boys— “Tap Pups”—learning tap. When I was learning the girls outweighed the boys, so Tap Dogs has certainly inspired. We love to do outreach, too; to give the students opportunities to perform with Tap Dogs when we can. On the secret philosophy behind Tap Dogs: For this show it’s “Timing is everything.” A great majority of the show only has the sound of feet and the rhythms they create. If the routines do not hold their time it can sound very bad very quickly. There is no click track or in-ear fold back for these, so Timing is Everything.

Forget about fifty shades—the magic of grayscale is infinite! From white to black and back again, the art of Grayscale explores the vibrancy and intensity of that palette, and addresses viewers’ ability to ascribe color to a black and white image by assessing the intensity of light that is different for every color. It’s at once the most exotic and the most common of canvases, the one thing that humans in every culture all over the planet decorate in the name of selfexpression. It’s also the name of an exciting new exhibit on body modification across cultures and over time at the Mansion through November 3. “When people think about body modification they tend to think in extremes,” says Harriet Lesser, Strathmore’s fine art curator. “Yes, it can be large tattoos or piercings, but body modification is something everybody does and is aware of, from putting on make-up to changing hairstyles.” We all use our bodies as a canvas to a certain extent, Lesser explains, a way to present ourselves to one another and the world. “This is just taking it a few steps further,” she says. “Tattoos, henna, hair and body painting: this is all moving into the realm of art. People are using it symbolically, as a rite of passage. It’s personal, and forever yours.”

But there’s more to Storied Strings than just one concert: Scottish fiddlers Alasdair Frasier, Natalie Haas, Jay Ungar, Molly Mason and Dirk Powell perform a concert of traditional American music, and violinist Elena Urioste showcases American classical composition with the National Philharmonic. But what is American classical composition?
Can an instrument be an immigrant? That’s the question behind Strathmore’s Storied Strings: The Violin in America, a season-long 11-concert series that sets out to explore not just the violin but its journey from Europe to the United States and its impact on the development of American music over the centuries.
“Since my career is central to American music I’m always asked that question,” says O’Connor. “I think instead of always looking to Europe we should have started acknowledging American classical composition much earlier: if we would have accepted ragtime and blues in academic settings we might have benefitted so much from it.”
“The fact that you can play the violin and make it sound a thousand different ways is extraordinary,” says composer-violinist Mark O’Connor. “And when you have a culturally diverse country like America, it’s odd that anyone would want everybody to sound alike.”
Now, he says, festivals like Storied Strings are critical because they validate past American composers, recognize the current crop, and inspire the musical geniuses of the future.
O’Connor—a genre-bending, Grammy-winning performer as well as a scholar, teacher and musicological pedagogue whose “O’Connor Method” promotes creativity and diversity in emerging violinists—is a strong advocate of American classical music, and his December 13th concert, An Appalachian Christmas, will be the centerpiece of the Storied Strings festival. “I always wanted to do a Christmas release,” he explains, “and finally did it last year with some superstar guests and some relaxing holiday music.” Between the superstar guests—Yo-Yo Ma, Alison Krauss, Renée Fleming and Jane Monheit—and

Or the Marian Anderson String Quartet, presenting a program of works by Banfield, Perkinson and Dvorák, as well as Negro Spirituals. “We don’t have to be Mozart,” O’Connor says. “We can be ourselves, use our own language, draw from our own experiences. “That’s American music.”
