McKnight’s Tale A N R & B S TA R GO E S AC O USTIC

Singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, multiinstrumentalist and legend of Rhythm & Blues: Brian McKnight signed his first recording contract when he was just 19 and has remained a fixture of the contemporary R&B scene ever since. He’s enchanted fans around the world with a voice that brings Stevie Wonder to mind, but McKnight is more than just a pretty voice. “I wanted to tell the story,” he says, “My story, told through the music I’ve written and performed over the years.” “I came in at a time when real music was still being made and played,” explains McKnight, who has collaborated with everyone from Sean “Puffy” Combs to Josh Groban to Justin Bieber. “I started with a piano and a guitar, and that’s how people see me still: the only way music can matter is if it means something.” McKnight’s eponymous 1992 debut led to 1995’s I Remember You and 1997’s Grammy-nominated two-million-seller, Anytime, then to 1999’s Back at One, which sold over three million copies and made him a household name.

Music Center at Strathmore this summer in a soulbaring, roof-raising acoustic extravaganza of music. “People get very emotional; they get very involved,” McKnight explains. “I’m onstage with my band and you can hear a pin drop.” He’s enlisted the talents of his older brother, Claude McKnight III, whose multi-Grammy-winning a cappella sextet Take 6 inspired the teenaged Brian to go professional. Also on the program are two of McKnight’s sons, Brian, Jr. and Niko, who perform professionally together as BRKN RBTS. The plan is to create a show within a show within a show—unplugged, up close and personal.

McKnight endeavors to exceed the audience’s expectations every time he steps onstage: to blow them away with a live show that’s better than any record. “I never want anyone to think they overpaid for my concert,” he says. “I want them to leave thinking, ‘Wow! I would have paid more.’”

And while his career has touched every corner of the entertainment industry—he performed in Chicago on Broadway, appeared on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, hosted his own late night television talk show and several radio shows—McKnight understands that, at the end of the day, it’s all about the music and the fans. “Most people know who I am, and who I want to be. This show is music in its purest form: These songs are this way because I am this way.” His tale moves audiences from laughter to tears with the help of piano-based ballads and bluesy homage. McKnight plans to bring his story to the

2011–2012 Season Preview AMERICAN COMPOSERS Enjoy, experience and explore more at Strathmore during the 2011–2012 season, as we celebrate American Composers—look for this symbol throughout the year highlighting featured events.

Celebrating CHARLES IVES His music is quintessentially American: The son of a Civil War bandleader, Charles Ives (1874–1954) was the very model of a New England gentlemanphilosopher-composer. Heavily influenced by Thoreau as well as by church music, 19th century American pop, and the European art house traditions, Yale-educated Ives created a score to accompany the American experience at a certain place and time in history. Many regard him as America’s pre-eminent concert composer.

Discover DUKE ELLINGTON He is ours to discover, Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899–1974), one of D.C.’s most beloved musical sons. Composer, pianist, big-band leader, Harlem Renaissance man and ambassador for the great American art form we call jazz, Ellington conjures to mind everything from ragtime to the Cotton Club. He called what he did “American Music,” and it was—from his big-band jazz to the Great American Songbook to the sacred music so dear to his wideopen heart. Duke Ellington has long been revered as a national treasure, and at Strathmore we’re proud to celebrate, elevate, and yes, discover him yet again.

At Strathmore listening and learning come together, and you can choose the way you load music into your life. Jazz lovers can take in a lecture/demonstration by Brad Linde after his Music in the Mansion appearance with Lee Konitz. How about more banjo? Multiple-Grammy-nominee Béla Fleck is considered by many to be the premier banjo player in the world. But, he’ll bring it home to Strathmore to reform the original line up of the Flecktones with Howard Levy, Victor Wooten and Futureman. But here’s the thing: at Strathmore there’s more of the world that’s right outside your door; more hometown talent like the Bruce Swaim Quartet. The tenor saxophonist is known as one of the D.C. music scene’s best-kept secrets, at once forwardthinking and nostalgic.

American composers can’t be confined to a single genre, and Keb’ Mo’ is proof of that. Multi-Grammywinner Keb’ Mo’—né Kevin Moore—brings his blues-inflected contemporary singer-songwriter style to Strathmore. And if you’re sensing a theme here, well, Madeleine Peyroux takes the early American blues-jazz genre with a unique, dreamy sense of intimacy. That’s the more in Strathmore: more depth, more breadth—more artists who matter. (301) 581-5100
