VISIONARY REFLECTIONS
After 38 years of phenomenal leadership, Strathmore Founder and CEO Eliot Pfanstiehl is retiring and looks back on his role in enriching a community with the arts. By Michelle Davis
In his leadership workshops across the state, Eliot Pfanstiehl always poses the same question: “How can you be more significant?” This altruistic focus is the cornerstone of Eliot’s life philosophy, and it is the motivating force that has shaped and nurtured Strathmore’s seismic growth during his tenure. It’s a story that begins in 1982. At the time, Eliot worked as the arts coordinator at the Montgomery County Department of Recreation. When the county decided to open an arts center, they turned to the one guy on staff who had “arts” in his title—it was a prescient move. Eliot led a committee to develop strategies for transforming the 100-year-old Corby Mansion into an arts venue with performances programmed by a nonprofit. The question became, who would run the nonprofit? “I had no intention of doing it,” laughs Eliot, “but the committee went behind my back to my boss and said, ‘Can we have Eliot?’” Needless to say, Eliot took the reins of the new Strathmore Hall Foundation and never looked back. The purpose of the Foundation, says Eliot, is threefold: “To present and produce exemplary visual and performing arts programs for diverse audiences, to create dynamic arts education experiences, and to nurture new ideas and conversations that advance the future of the arts.” Guided by this forward-looking mission, Eliot organically grew the arts center, enriching a wider and wider swath of the community with new programs, new stages, and new initiatives.
8
STRATHMORENEWS | Summer 2018 | www.strathmore.org
On day one, it was just Eliot and a part-time secretary. Payroll was covered primarily through Mansion event rentals. But by using what he calls “level three thinking,” Eliot pushed himself and his team to think bigger . . . and bigger . . . and bigger. Innovative initiatives like intimate chamber music concerts, afternoon tea, a gift shop, outdoor summer concerts, and special annual events diversified income streams. A temporary outdoor stage gave way to the Gudelsky Concert Pavilion, doubling concert attendance. And what could be even better than that? What about a fully-fledged music hall? In 2001, Strathmore broke ground on its state-of-theart Music Center. “You’ve got Art Garfunkel standing on our stage saying this is one of the top 10 halls in the world,” Eliot beams. “We are told by artists nearly every night what a great hall it is because they love to hear themselves sound good.” President Monica Jeffries Hazangeles has worked for Strathmore since 1994. She says she will never forget the day Eliot called to say the county approved funding for the Music Center. “His voice was full of optimism, terror, and excitement. He described the camaraderie of undertaking that incredible adventure together, and I knew it would change Strathmore and our community, forever.”
ELIOT’S TOP GOOSEBUMP MOMENTS
Indeed, the Music Center marked a major turning point for Strathmore, most notably seen in the sheer number of community members who now experience and participate in the Strathmore magic throughout the campus. The success of the Music Center has put Strathmore in a position to think outside the box—or outside the mansion, as it were. In just the past five years they have built AMP, a 200-seat nightclub that Eliot describes as “a real departure for us,” but it fell right in sync with Strathmore’s mission to provide music fans with great show options. While Eliot might be preparing to wind down, Strathmore’s momentum is only gaining speed. “Strathmore is in the best possible shape of its history,” Eliot says. “It has the strongest staff it has ever had. It is financially secure. . . It has the artistic reputation we’ve always wanted. . . There’s never been a better time to leave.” Eliot leaves behind a legacy that Monica encapsulates in four familiar words: “Seek significance, not success.” “Everything about Eliot’s tenure illustrates this simple mantra and is embedded in Strathmore’s soul,” she says. “We must know why we are doing something to understand its impact. Who can we involve or serve to increase the authenticity and sustainability of our work? What projects or programs galvanize the community’s interest and serve the greater good? If posed regularly, these questions will ensure that Strathmore remains vital and visionary for generations to come.”
The vision of Strathmore is simple: “to create transcendent moments that ignite the human spirit.” According to Eliot, the short way to say that is “goosebump moments.” Here are some of the performances and initiatives that struck a chord with him.
BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL “I come from a musical theater background. I did a lot of choreography in college and high school. So to see Brian Stokes Mitchell doing songs from Broadway makes my spine tingle.”
JOSHUA BELL “You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Joshua Bell in concert on violin, solo, play one of his high E notes that just sustains and sustains and sustains, and gets quieter and quieter and even at its quietest, people at the very top balcony at the back of the hall think that he is practically standing next to them. It’s just magical.”
BLOOM Eliot calls this initiative one of “the most exciting things I’ve done in my 38 years.” Bloom has allowed Strathmore to reach out to Montgomery County communities that would benefit from enriching, affordable, and sustainable music and arts programs. Bloom put Step dance classes in high schools, formed a 100-person student orchestra, and created opportunities for church choirs to collaborate with artists in residence, “always striving to nurture the rich artistic talent that exists in East County.” Strathmore President Monica Jeffries Hazangeles notes that, “By using the arts to build bridges throughout the county, we invite more voices, more ages, more cultures, more talents to the table. We discover what makes our residents unique and what can bind us together.”
TONY BENNETT
Jim Morris
“The house was packed with the biggest audience we’ve ever had. On his last number, he put down the microphone and sang with no amplification. And here’s where acoustics matter: every person in the house could hear every word. When he did that it was like, ‘Oh God, kill me now. I’ve seen it all.’ It was the most wonderful, aweinspiring performance from a man who was 90 years old! I will never forget that night. The ultimate mic drop.”
