TARGET USERS
ARRIVAL POINT: FRANKFURT, GERMANY
THE CONTEXT
WHERE ARE DISASTER ZONES?
W H AT H A P P E N E D PEOPLE AFFECTED BY ANY KIND OF WAR,WHO FLEE FROM THEIR HOMES TO REFUGEE CAMPS.
BY MID 2015, THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS HIT EUROPE. IN SEPTEMBER 2015, THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES REACHED THE CITY OF FRANKFURT. HUNDREDS OF WELL INTENDED PEOPLE DONATED CLOTHING,FOOD, WATER -AND EVEN TOYS- TO THE NEWCOMERS. HOWEVER, MASSIVE FLOWS OF IN-KIND DONATIONS NOT ALWAYS ADDRESS THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF PEOPLE AND CAN OVERWHELM THE LIMITED LOGISTICS CAPACITY OF AID ORGANIZATIONS.

1
WHAT WE LEARNED
“WITH FRESH FOOD, THERE ARE MANY ITEMS THAT AGENCIES DON’T ORDER BECAUSE THEY OR THEIR USERS DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM.”
In social networks volunteers ask for plastic bags to separate food supplies
“WHEN WE RECEIVED,THERE WAS NO VARIETY IN THE FOOD, SOMETIMES WE EXCHANGED DONATIONS IN LOCAL STORES. FOR EXAMPLE WE HAD A LOT OF RICE, SO WE EXCHANGED IT FOR ONIONS.”
“IT TOOK 3 MONTHS TO KNOW THE COMMUNITY. WE HAD A BETTER ACCESS TO THEM WHEN WE DID NOT TRY TO CHANGE HOW THEY EAT.”
2

3
COMMUNICATION Volunteers do not know what type of donations and how many are coming
Donators do not know what they need to donate or what is useful in a specific situation
Fruits and fresh food need some sort of packaging to avoid going bad
Packaging becomes waste after being used; there is no second use
VICTIMS
“THERE IS A VOID/INEXISTENCE OF COMPREHENSION OF LOGISTICS IN DISASTER SITUATIONS. EVERYONE TRIES TO HELP BUT THERE’S A HUGE EMPTY PLACE WHERE COMMUNICA TION SHOULD BE.”
PACKAGING
let’s his! on t
Language acts as a barrier between volunteers and recipients
DISTRIBUTION
Users’ needs are not always taken into consideration
Logistics are poorly executed and not tailored to specifics situations
There is a lack of storage facilities for food, including for non-perishable food
