Hotel and Biodiversity Observatory at Salinas de Janubio - Honours Degree Salinas de Janubio, Lanzarote

When thinking about Lanzarote the first thing that comes to our mind is the concept of materialness, its volcanoes, its rocky surface and its excavated caverns. However, navigation was a crucial aspect in the island for a very long period of time due to it being its only access and way of exchanging goods between the islands, the Spanish Peninsula Europe and Africa. Furthermore, due to the abrupt dismantling of the fishing industry, a crucial economic sector in the island, a large naval fleet was left abandoned. The purpose of the project is to find a fusion between the material identity of Lanzarote and its closely linked history to navigation. This work is an intervention in nature, trying to associate the organic shapes and elements of the island, its singular circular constructions that protect the vines, the linear design of the existing salt Salines with the marine identity of Lanzarote through the use of wood from the abandoned boats, its capes, ropes and fishing nets, trying to reflect in the architectural design the shape of ports, docks and piers. Jury’s veredict: The jury finds the project a singular combination of sensibility, expressiveness and maturity that deserves all recognition. The careful implantation in the existing landscape, the use of materials and vernacular techniques or the management of the water highlight the comprehensive concept of sustainability and environmental respect convered throughout the whole design. The different architectural configurations and constructive materialization are solved brilliantly in all scales, as well as its outstanding graphical narration.

This QR code will take you to my official video presentation.

SALINAS DE JANUBIO: A FASCINATING ECOSYSTEM When intervening a previously man-sculpted environment, like the Salines of Janubio that are currently abandoned but have turned into a beautiful landscape on its own, one has to answer a very important question: ¿how to implement a new landscape within an already existing one?

THE OBSERVATORY : A NEW FLOATING ECOSYSTEM

Roof plan of the bird observatory area, original scale E.1.150 ¿What happens when an architecture project no longer fulfils its original function? ¿How will it impact nature and its surroundings? The observatory’s approach is to become a future ruin of wooden boards and ropes where the endemic vegetation can grow and expand, creating new floating ecosystem at the lake. Therefore, the wooden structure will be assimilated by the landscape mirroring how the Salines became a part of the environment years ago.

Walking south through the wooden board walk we will arrive at the hotel area, sheltered by the hillside from the strong winds of the island and hidden from the general view. This hotel will colonise the hill, opening itself in a fan-like shape in order to provide views towards the salines and marshes. As the hotel moves away from the hillside it loses it materiality, starting with a heavier visual weight on the first floor provided by the huge vegetation covers and concrete walls and ending on a lighter inferior floor, where the wooden structures are elevated from the ground.

TWO ATMOSPHERES IN THE SAME PROJECT The materiality of its constructive elements divides the project in two:

The ground floor relates to the identity of the island as a marine port, resembling a dock where the rooms are attached as if they were moored boats. This ‘dock’ is covered with white textiles that resemble sails that will move with the rhythm of the wind as a boat raising the sails.

Cross Section 1 original scale 1.75

The second floor seeks to relate to the concept of materiality and shelter of Lanzarote by merging with the landscape through its vegetation covers and rock gardens. At this floor you will find all the public buildings as well as its ‘sheltered’ rooms, shielded from the sun and heat. The host will be able to choose in which type of atmosphere he wants to stay in: exposed to the beautiful landscape at the ‘naval’ rooms or secluded by the rocks at the ‘retreat’ rooms.

In order to homogenize the different programmes and achieve a co-existing public-private activity a unique and single roof is created that will cover a great part of the mutiado area, leaving the surrounding areas as lush vegetation (taking care of it not invading pavements and structures). To avoid any vehicle obstruction, traffic will be redirected to the roof, transforming it into roads and parking spaces. This solution is taken as in Puerto Rico cars are a vital element in order commute anywhere. This system also allows a quick transport mode for the visitor, avoiding walking long distances or depend on public transport. Furthermore, a tramway route covers the whole roof, allowing visitors and tourists without cars to move around quicker.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM Trusses will be used as beams to hold the pavilions at the different levels. This is due to them being able to support greater loads and cover bigger distances while being lighter. For the floor slabs steel composite slabs will be used due to speed up the construction and to provide a simpler assembly. Its light weight will simplify transportation, reducing overall costs and deadlines.

HURRICANE SHELTER In case of emergency due to the hurricanes that happen quite frequently, a constructive system of shelters is conceived in order to relocate part of the population of the city of Ponce. It will be a quick assembly shelter with easy to locate materials that will provide temporary protection for the evacuees and will be built over the existing structure.

The project is to design an extension of the existing Buddhist academy in Hangzhou. The academy is located near one of the most important temples in Hangzhou: Lingyin temple. The proposal consists of an extension covering the surrounding plots with buildings scattered through it and connected through a concrete platform. The project seeks to relate to the Buddhist traditions that regarding the carving of the mountain. Similarly, the project will be carved inside the ground referencing the Buddhist ways. Furthermore, the project will alternate between excavated pieces contrasting with other elements that seem to spring upwards from the ground.

A workshop pavilion is proposed situated at the east area of the campus parking. Due to it being an esplanade the area will receive a great amount of sunlight , therefore the proposal consists of a building with wooden slats in the East and West façades that act as a sun filter while leaving the North and South façades blind, covered with GRC paneles to avoid light entering.

MICRO CIT Y

Climbing the scaffolding Amsterdam, Holand

The idea is to create a micro city inside the city of Amsterdam in order to rejuvenate the Ijburg neighbourhood. It starts with a basic module that will be repeated in order to create various patterns and configurations. The project is divided into four central spaces (piazzas) that centralise the different uses and functions of the project. Theses spaces will be surrounded by green areas that will act as a barrier between the public and private spaces, providing intimacy to the residents. The configuration of the project is arranged by groups of modules, each one with its corresponding use: supermarkets, shops, gyms, bike rentals, kindergarten... These public spaces are scattered throughout the ground floor, sometimes appearing on other levels in order to create a dynamic rhythm. The residential spaces are designed in the upper levels in order to provide a greater amount of sunlight and privacy. The faรงades alternate between opaque an transparent, differentiating the public from private and creating a suggestive space that plays with the limits and perspective of the project.

Interior view

In conclusion, this microcity seeks to address the current necesities of Ijburg with a possibility of a huge expansion due to its simple configuration in the xyz planes.

The project proposes a small expansion added to ‘Casa en Llabia’ in Gerona designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura. The expansion proposed consists of a cooking workshop area that will be located between the main house access stairway and the guest house area. This is done in order to ensure it will be an independent building. Its enclosure will consist of corrugated metal in order to create a striking contrast with the current home in order to be easily identifiable. The interior will alternate micro cement for the floor, black stucco for the walls and finally wood will be used to cover the counter tops shelves and appliances.

U R B A N Urban Planning in Makeni DESIGN Makeni, Sierra Leona

This project is developed vinculated to the collaboration CEU-Unimark whose purpose is to serve as technical support to the urban planning processes in Makeni by designing a new sector of urban expansion in the city.

444 dwellings total Gross density: 21 dw/Ha Total surface:16,4 Ha

Agricultural parks and crop areas

Even though the city has two universities, there is a lack of training in technical careers like architecture, urban planning or civil engineering. The actual context is complex and the city faces enormous challenges that seem to aggravate due to its fast development. The proposal consists of a new neighbourhood that is connected to the main existing roads and seeks to take advantage of the swamp areas, converting them to agricultural parks that will provide crop areas to locals and will offer an attractive area to visitors. The edification will be made with local materials and simple constructive techniques easily carried out by locals.

The main roads are slightly curved when entering the sector to force a speed eduction

‘INCREMENTAL HOUSING’ 1. Single floor dwellings ‘Row houses’ ‘Cluster houses’

The initial construction will be single floor houses, but pillars will be projected in order to facilitate a future expansion.

Open spaces and piazzas to encourage socialisation and personal relations

2. Expansion to second floor dwellings Second floor dwellings will be constructed when needed. The existing roof will be elevated through the pillars initialy constructed, creating a second floor without wasting materials.

3. Construction of collective houses Finally, when a collective housing unit is needed a higher building will be constructed in the previous empty plot used as a private park.

M E M O - Remembering, recalling World War 1 VerdĂşn, France RIAL Coinciding with the First World War Centenary in 2014, the proposal consisted of designing a cemetery and memorial in memory of the soldiers that lost their lives at war. Verdun was chosen as the site due to it being one of the main locations where some of the most brutal battles took place. The project consists on a massive excavation that creates terraces recreating the different position points of the trenches during the course of the war. The cemetery consists of tombstones that follow the outline of the terraces along each platform. The memorial is created through excavating a deep rift that divides the hill. This brutal act of excavation tries to convey how war divides humanity and nations into two sides causing profound and hurtful wounds.

EXPOSI- Information Center about La Almadraba in Tarifa TION Tarifa, Cรกdiz The proposal consists of a public, accessible place that caters to the local population as well as tourists that arrive daily through port. The ensemble comprises a series of buildings connected through a pathway. These pieces are independent from one another in order to maintain the relation of the piazza with the sea and to avoid blocking the view. These buildings define the urban intervention creating a piazza between them, resembling the traditional way of fishing inn the Almadraba. Its heights are limited by the height of the pedestrian in order to maintain the visual connection with the sea from the street.

The proposal of the Interpretation Centre consists of simple volumes that will follow certain characteristics: *They will reinforce the horizontal and east-west axis, encouraging an intuitive and easy route.*The building volumes are linear and without any ornament in order to bring attention to the variety of the faรงades *The south facade maintains a dialogue with the sea through the brick patterns that reflect the movement of the waves and wind.*The north facade that looks towards the piazza will be permeable, covered with a brick lattice that blurs the relation between exterior and interior spaces.

The pathway that covers the building and surroundings has the intention of reactivating the park and provide a new use to the ‘cuesta de los ciegos’ (blind men’s hill). The visitor will be able to observe the various stages of cooking and participate by tasting the preparations at the restaurant. This tour, thanks to the platform and stairs, connects the two surrounding streets that have an altitude different of 16m. The position of the building allows the visitor to have privileged views towards the Almudena Cathedral while the workers and cooks are surrounded by vegetation in the administrative area in the inferior level.

A SUSTAINABLE PROJECT

Passive Strategies

A key factor in this designs is to be sustainable and environment-conscious. Therefore, a compact building is proposed where the resources are optimised, uses are grouped by floors and energy is obtained through ways that are respectful with the environment. Local materials will be used, recycled and reusable in the future and a double skin is designed to optimise the temperature inside the building while camouflaging the installation elements.

U R B A N Travelling with a sketchbook SKETCHING One of my passions is travelling and capturing the experiences inside my sketchbook. Throughout the years I’ve had the privilege of creating a collection of travel and experience sketchbooks. Nowadays most of our phones are full of pictures of spectacular places taken while traveling that are never seen again. However, a drawing is a personal interpretation of the place, and every time you look at it you are taken back to the moment you were drawing it, making it a wonderful experience. I believe drawing is still a vital part of architecture nowadays even though it has been abandoned due to the increasing use of graphic programmes. Being able to express myself through drawings has allowed me to communicate easier my ideas for designs and projects.
