COMFORTABLE WORKSPACE

ORGANIC SETTING

INITIAL CONCEPT IDEA The design was created through application of biophilia to the urban setting in order to create a high rise that can act as a public vertical garden and a natural air -filter for the surrounding context as well. Initial freehand sketches using biophilic precedents such as the double helix as seen in DNA resulted in an opportunistic design with 3 separate but intertwined towers, creating beautiful greenery filled views at any level of the tower. The principle of biomimicry are used to create a fluid form of the structure. By using phyllotaxis patterns (e.g. a diagrid) it is possible to reduce material use without compromising the quality.

AIR PURIFICATION

SPACE FOR INTERACTION AESTHETIC FORM

Increasing biodiversity is another challenge that the design provides an solution for. By placing vertical gardens it is not only ensured that there is a natural shading and air filter from the greenery, but also the structure is inviting to different animal species.

GROUND FLOOR DEVELOPMENT Healthy and sustainable design strategies were introduced in order to provide improvement to the context via water recycling, air purifying gardens and an appealing visual of the greenery even from further away view at the high rise.

BIOMIMICRY

Parametric design ensured the ability of the fluid symmetrical form through the exoskeleton development and radial grid introduction. Interior comfort is achieved through furniture development, as well as installation of passive ventilation and natural shading. The waterfall feature brings a point of interest into publically accessed park, which creates an urban connection at the ground level of the structure and invites the public user to explore the gardens and interactive waterfall platforms located on the above levels. Trees are developed and grown in the laboratory space within the structure in order cut costs of tree purchasing and delivery at such heights, as well as giving the research centre an opportunity to showcase their achievements by placing the plants on the exterior publically accessed balconies.

By introducing biomimicry principles into the structure it is possible to take the idea of being close to nature in urban setting further into the design. Following patterns of nature in structural principles creates less material waste and increase efficiency. The twist of the tower is inspired by the DNA symmetry, however adapted to the programme pf having separate towers. By placing vertical gardens in urban setting it is possible to increase biodiversity of cities and create a new nature-urban balance which can provide healthier living.

DEVELOPMENT IN PLAN CORE COVERAGE

office area conference rooms utilities core

The floor plan arrangement was proposed using a radial grid in order to maximise unique views out throughout the structure. Open space office areas benefit from unobstructed open view, meanwhile the conference rooms have the benefit of using automatic facade of the atrium for temperature control, as well as benefiting from natural soundscape sounds

INITIAL CONCEPT SECTION

SUN + WIND

Reducing the bulk on the upper half of the structure and creating gaps in the form allowed the wind load onto the high rise to be reduced. Due to the sunpath the tower with southern trees than require the most sun is place onto the south facade, meanwhile the office tower is secured from nearby structure overlooking using natural obstruction of view - the trees.

PRECEDENT ANALYSIS COST CUTTING SOLUTIONS 1.Long lasting concrete will be able to accommodate tree growth for a long period of time, ensuring efficiency of the concepts. 2.Water filter is installed and connected to nearby structures so local community can benefit from a single water recycling system as a lot of water is used by the structure to water plants and for the waterfall system the water costs can be cut with filter installation. 3.Amorphous properties of concrete is the most suitable solution for achieving organic shape of the floor plates. 4.Exoskeleton is using less material that a usual core and columns system. Introducing exoskeleton instead of the third core to support the remaining tower is a more sustainable solution due to less material used, as well as more open space on the floor plates provided. 5.Partial exoskeleton is cheaper to design and construct, as it is only used to support floor plates that aren’t reachable by the cores. 6.The more repetitive parts used in the structure, the cheaper it will be to manufacture. 7.The atrium is installed with mirrors and opening panels so daylight reaches further into floor plates. Natural light allows for more economical use of electricity.

CIRCULATION Due to a structural challenge proposed by large openings of the form, the consideration of parametric design strategies for loadbearing structure and facade is applicable. Strategies like installation of partial exoskeleton to support the floor plate that aren’t attached to either of the cores and parametric diagrid facade (developed in Grasshopper) are suitable and therefore were used in the design.

INITIAL INTERIOR SKETCHES

FURNITURE DEVELOPMENT (OFFICE DESKS)

Organic shape of the desk was designed in order to fit the radial grid of the floor plate. As furniture is modular, it is possible to achieve a range of configurations depending on purpose. The development of furniture for the office area allowed the exploration of health and safety. Due to Covid-19, see-through “bubble”separators were installed in order to limit the spread of virus/bacteria from one employee to another without losing on office communication or atmosphere. The tress are installed for improved air quality and to create a link between the greenhouse area and the office space

Client Brief The client’s brief requested a new-build structure with a duplex apartment at lower 6 pm ground/ ground floors, and to investigate multiple flat occupancy above. Considering the varied architectural style along the street it is clear that there is no sinNoon gle predominant feature from which to reference, however the recent development at N Chiswick Lodge (located opposite the application site) offers stronger cues with regards 6 am to form, massing and materiality. A 4 bed unit is proposed for lower ground and ground floors. A combined kitchen, dining and living area is proposed at ground level . A mix of one and two bed units is proposed at first and second floors.

The surrounding area is characterised by a mix of different styles and designs of properties, with a modern development directly opposite the site known as Chiswick Lodge. It is considered that the design and appearance of the proposed development would reflect the character and appearance of the surrounding area and the Old Chiswick Conservation Area would continue to be preserved and enhanced. CONTRIBUTION NOTE: Responsible forKey design development, room arrangement and developing to suit the London Plan standard. As the site is in a conservation area, attended a site visit to ensure Extension proposal consideration of nearby context and nature. Existing structure

The replacement structure occupies the full plot width, which matches the existing house arrangement; its building line is 1.8m set back from the existing dwelling, & 0.8m set back from the garage. The front facade has been separated into three statement parts to allow for balcony amenity & daylight ingress which creates repetition, & read together with the strategic omission of mass, helps to animate the facade and in turn creates interest. The development allows for two separate entrances, one for the duplex dwelling, and the other with a dedicated stair access to upper floors. The building is formed by introducing recesses necessary to create amenity & daylight ingress which in turn helps reduce mass in relation to the adjacent property at second floor level. The slant of the mansard arrangement roof softens the building facade towards 104 Netheravon Road South, this feature repeats along the north facing facade along Great West Road, and also along the west facing facade. The mansard roof acknowledges the same roof style featured within the Chiswick Lodge development. The proposal features a flat crown roof with a statement part located on the intersection of Netheravon Road South and Great West Road, celebrating the corner position of the plot. Breaking up the continuous mansard roof along Great West Road are three dormer windows offering daylight into key internal spaces.
