There is a new initiative called Girls in Sport that is trying to increase girls‟ interest in sport at school. Right now 40 per cent of teenage girls in Britain drop out of sport and PE during school and 91 per cent of women between the ages of 16 and 24 hardly do any exercise at all. The Girls in Sport initiative has been developed by the Youth Sport Trust and Nike. The research in seventy-four schools so far has discovered that the problem is partly caused by a lack of famous role-model sportswomen. We are surrounded by pictures of female pop stars, models and actresses, but in the world of sport the media usually focuses on male stars. However, the problem is also gender discrimination and sexist attitudes. There is a myth that sport is not for girls, and boys are often given more praise for their sporting success. But the study also discovered how some simple changes in the trial schools greatly encouraged girls to continue playing sport. Giving female pupils the chance to plan their own PE lessons was a great success and it led to the introduction of sports like football and aerobics. The girls were also allowed to wear what they liked, and changing room facilities were improved. The aims of the scheme are not just to improve results in sporting events. Sue Campbell, chief executive of the Youth Sports Trust, says, “Girls who play sport tend to have higher self-esteem and greater self-confidence. Research shows that they are more likely to develop assertive, positive, optimistic personalities.”
