COLLECTIVE HOUSING, KINDERGARDEN AND SQUARE IN VALLADOLID School

Collective Housing+Kindergarden+Square

Location

Valladolid. Spain

The project is a complex building, with different programming (collective living and kindergarden) placed in a corner plot, with one of the elevations to a square, and the other to a heavy traffic street. The building develops in only one volume, making the different uses not visible from the outside, completing the block and creating a closure of the city centre. That closure is also defined by the change in the height to the square, which highlights the corner. The Yard, on the other hand, is a garden in different platforms where the needed outdoor spaces for the kindergarden and the apartments are.

A great part of the conditions were that a part of the building would be a kindergarden with all its necessities. For example the access is located to the square, where the former street is turned into a space only for pedestrians and continues to the school placed in the neighbor block, creating a safe space for children and families. The other street, Nicol谩s Salmer贸n, is treated for the traffic to move slower by making the road narrower and giving priority to the pedestrians by putting it at the same level as the square. As for the square, the main priority is to give it back to pedestrians, making it a continuous space. To help with the understanding of one space there are some unifiying elements, such as the lights and the pavement pattern that give the square an identity. The square is divided in two clear parts, the first one being the former street now closed to traffic becomes an activity zone related to the area of the shadows of the trees. The other, the area in the sun, is an area to stay close to the old kiosk.

CREATING A SAFE AREA

The kindergarden is situated in the first three floors with its most public spaces in the ground floor. As a result of the small space for the project one of the main concepts is that all the spaces should be as flexible as possible in order to adapt to the user’s needs. Because of that the aulas are planned to be able to be changed in a lot of ways, adapting to the different number of children the activity requires or how the classes are organized. The connection to the outside can also be total by expanding the aulas or the play-rooms to the diffferent platforms in the yard.

Collective housing. The common spaces for accessing the apartments are minimized by not entering the apartments in all the floors. That allows the useful common spaces, like the roofs and laundry rooms to become a greater part of the project, acting as a social area and making the relationships happen. The different kinds of apartments we were asked to project are based on actual social studies, such as the late emancipation of young people, the necessity of some families to support their elder, the tendency for small families or the posibility of working at home based on the development of internet and new technologies.

MASTER STUDENTS AND TEACHERS RESIDENCE School Year Tutor

The Superior Technical School of Architecture of Valladolid, UVA. 2011-12 Antonio Paniagua, Jose María Jové, Pablo Nuñez

Program

Temporary Collective Housing+ Educational Centre

Location

Ahmedabad. India

THE YARD When I analyzed the surroundings where the project would be, i found the preexistent sequence of spaces really interesting. The yard is able to be seen from the outside, but it is closed, generating a space between the most private and most public parts. In the POL, this yards were usually used as “IMPLUVIUM” CHAHAR BAGH Based on the idea of paradise, the garden is placed in two different levels, the path situated higher than the vegetation, so the fruits, colors and smells get closer to the view and touch of the visitor. The difference of levels are also used to water the garden by flooding the lower part.

The main concept is to encourage the learning of students and teachers by mixing uses, generating meeting points, and minimizing the private places. All these uses are visually connected so that the whole building participates from the “learning from eachother concept. To support this connection the main common space including the yard is situated in a central place in close relation with every other space. As the space is open to the outside but covered it creates a natural ventilation and protection from the sun. The private uses, protected by filters, are placed with another scale inside this great volume.

MUSEUM OF THE DESERT School Year Tutor

The Superior Technical School of Architecture of Valladolid, UVA. 2011-12 Antonio Paniagua, Jose María Jové, Pablo Nuñez

Museum

Location

Marrakech. Morocco.

The project is located in Marrakech, wall to wall with the Majorelle Garden. It refers to some of the characteristics of the desert. The building integrates in the place by infiltration, disappearing in its way to the garden and grows in mass to the city. The exibition with its light requirements goes changing from the radical light of the desert to the filtered light of an oasis during the museum

Change depending on the point of view, on the movement of the spectator. Perspective game; what the viewer sees is not what it is. Conception of the space as something “built” and with a particular function. The space is built by different elements: repetition.
