NORDVEGEN HISTORY CENTRE tells the story about how Avaldsnes became The First Royal Throne of Norway.
HOMELAND OF THE VIKING KINGS, NORWAY´S BIRTHPLACE
FROM The Viking Farm.
In Norway, and at the heart of Fjord Norway, you will find the Haugesund region. This is the Homeland of the Viking Kings – Norway’s birthplace. Here you can discover the island of Karmøy, where Avaldsnes is situated – Norway’s oldest throne.
PRIOR TO the Viking Age, Avaldsnes was a seat of power. This is where the Vikings ruled the route that gave its name to Norway – the way north. Around 870 AD, King Harald the Fairhaired made Avaldsnes his main royal estate, which was to become Norway’s oldest throne. From the time the first seafaring vessels were built in the late Stone Age and up to the Middle Ages, the seat of power of the reigning princes and kings has been located at Avaldsnes. Such power-continuity does not exist anywhere else in Scandinavia.
3
Avaldsnes is therefore a key point in understanding the fundamental importance of voyage by sea in terms of Norway’s earliest history. The foundation stone of modern Norway was laid in 1814, but the country’s historical foundation is located at Avaldsnes. Today, one can visit St. Olav’s church at Avaldsnes, as well as Nordvegen History Center, and the Viking Farm. These are all places of importance for the Vikings and the history of Norway.

AVALDSNES Travel back in time to experience Avaldsnes, the first ice-free location in Norway. The site is also home to the first king of Norway – Harald the Fairhaired. AT THE NORDVEGEN HISTORY CENTER we will be introduced to the history of Norway using modern technology, where the senses are stimulated to enhance the overall experience. With audio, lighting, images, and film – Harald the Fairhaired himself will guide us on a journey through 3,500 years. Outside the history centre lies St. Olav’s Church, built by King Håkon Håkonsson around 1250 AD. Norway’s power was then at its greatest and the church can therefore be seen as a symbol of the unification of the
Norwegian Kingdom completed by King Håkon Håkonsson. We make a visit inside to hear more about this important Church. An upright stone is located behind the Church. This is known as the Virgin Mary’s sewing needle and is the only one remaining of several monumental stones which once stood around the church. The stone leans in towards the church wall and a saga tells that Judgment Day will arrive when the stone comes into contact with the church wall.

LANGFOSS IS the fifth highest waterfall in Norway. In 2011, CNN named Langfoss as one of the world’s 10 most beautiful waterfalls. The total vertical height is 612 meters. The path up along Langfoss was originally the old mountain road from the Eljarvik farm to Langfoss Mountain Farm, located on the plateau above the waterfall. There is a lot of great stonework along the trail. Earlier generations of farmers struggled up and down with livestock and heavy loads of butter and cheese from the mountain farm.
THE MOUNTAIN REACHES 1100 METERS above sea level. The main attraction here is a piece of mountain strutting out from a cliff at 700 meters above the lake beneath. Imagine standing there, looking out on the lake below, surrounded by mountain tops … It takes about 3 to 4 hours one way to reach Trolltunga from where the bus stops. Ascending nearly 1000 meters, you’ll pass waterfalls, beautiful green vegetation, as well as steep mountains that make the walk varied and exciting. The ultimate reward is of course the spectacular view at the top.
The first part of the walk is steep, going up through the pine forest. Some places, and especially when you are above the timberline, provide wonderful view points. You look down at the Eljarvik Farm and beyond Åkrafjorden Fjord. To the north you see Mosnes and into the valley that forms the southern end of Folgefonna National Park. The Folgefonna Glacier is towering in the background towards the summit at 1638 meters above sea level, which is the highest point in the municipality of Etne.

CHEAPER PILOTAGE FEE TO PORT OF HAUGESUND According to the pilot master of Rogaland county, cruise ships from abroad sailing to Haugesund may now take pilots on board at Røvær pilot boarding field, just east of Haugesund. In comparison to previous regulations, the distance with pilot will be considerably shorter. This means cheaper pilotage!
