Extracting honey by hand A top bar hive
Top Bar Hives The top bar hive design originated in Kenya, Africa. This hive structure allows bees to create their own bee space and wax foundation. Natural bee space is smaller than bee space in Langstroth hives. Some beekeepers assert smaller, natural bee space results in fewer problems in managing colonies and hives.
Another advantage of top bar hive beekeeping is the weight a beekeeper must lift when harvesting honey. With a top bar hive you harvest individual frames of honey, each weighing a few pounds each. A top bar hive may be a good choice for any aspiring beekeeper who is differently-abled.
