LANDSCAPE

G e ner a l M a ssi ng . Composed by two paralelepiped dispossed perpendicularly from each other. One of them is elevated and serves as the element which signals the main access of the house. These two volumes intersect, making a two-storey courtyard, which articulates the first and second floor, each dedicated to social and intimate areas respectively. Finally, these two volumes “dialogue” with their surroundings through perimetral circulation, permeable facades and balconies.

Stru ctu re . The use of structural materials is divided horizontally, having this way a concrete basement, which is then articulated through metal plaques to the wooden structure that conforms the residence. Spatial Organ izatio n . The residence has been divided in two ways, (1) vertically, where the spaces belong to the duality: social/intimate; (2) horizontally -meaning in each floorwhere spaces belong to the duality: served/servant spaces. In te rio rs . The surrounding nature is enhanced inside the residence through the use of materials and textures that remind of nature, such as stones, wood an bamboo among others. Lan ds cape . The surroundings have been inspired by the traditional japanese gardens. Given this, different elements of the gardens are related to each cardinal direction.

Th e Pl a c e . Located in Caracas’ Country Club, the lot is surrounded by multiple vegetation species, which serve as home to the variety of fauna that are native to this city. To the northwest limit, there is also a drinkable water tributary. For these reasons, nature and its inclution in the design, take major importance in the proposal.

Lan ds cape . It’s sculpted by the own net, creating resting spaces -like the sculpture garden and the amphitheater-, or transitional spaces -like the inverted cone where the vertical circulation takes place inside The cone-.

S tr u c tur e . Volumes are based in a basic concrete columnbeam structure; and the net is composed by metallic tubular sections.

ACADEMIC PORTFOLIO

Vol u m e t r y . It’s composed by three basic volumes; a parallelepiped, a cone and a cylinder, which are crossed and articulated with each other and with the museum by a dynamic and organic net, inspired by the facade of the preexisting design.

Spatial Organ izatio n . Each volume responds to a complementary program for the museum being The parallelepiped that which purpose is to alocate salas for stationary expositions, it offers also a “sculpture garden” as well as a studio for art classes. The cylinder conforms an anphitheater, proposing this way a space for other forms of contemporary art like dance and cinema. And The cone, which accomodates activities related with the exterior of the museum, like a cafe and a pocket-size souvenir store. This volume serves as well as a way to establish a direct relation with the train station and the pedestrian influx.

The Pl a c e . Located in the green areas of the Museum of Modern Art of Saitama, having as conditionants the relations between (1) the proposal and the preexisting museum -designed by the metabolist architect Kishō Kurokawa-, (2) the museum and the nearby train station.

From it’s begginings, the city has been a place which, through the impact of its citizens, has been able to develop and evolve. These generations, have been leaving it’s marks imprinted in the urban fabric through time, creating this way a group of “urban footprints”. It’s from this premise that the concept of Urban Palimpsest1 is born . The Place. San Bernardino was the first neighborhood that created a rupture in the old colonial grid used to

organize Caracas’ downtown. This rupture of paradigms, as well as the rich vegetation, water streams and the social and cultural dynamics of this particular area, marked the neighborhood. Although, even with it’s important background, today many of the afore-mentioned footprints have been forgotten, or they are only known and kept in the memory of the oldest members of San Bernardino. However, there is a small number of them which are still found in the

urban fabric. Through this work, San Bernardino and its footprints are studied in three times: past, present and future; to then propose future development scenarios, having these being the result of the understanding of the evolution process of the neighborhood, and leaving this way a glimpse of what our generation could imprint on today’s San Bernadino.
