JING’AN OFFICE 2013/14. SHANGHAI - CHINA RECEPTION ENTRANCE. INTERIOR DESIGN

Concept Design, Schemathic Design & Detail Design
As Oscar Niemeyer once wrote: “It is not the right angle that attracts me, Nor the hard, inflexible straight line, man-made. What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves in my country’s mountains, In the sinuous flow of its rivers, In the beloved woman’s body.” Situated at the heart of the cosmopolitan and modern Shanghai, this interior project transforms the entrance of a ten year old mixed use building into a creative and strong office reception space. The contrast between the solid cold white stone wall (on the left side) and the dynamic wooden wall (on the right side), takes us to a balanced space where all the elements seem to be well integrated. The reception desk as well the seating area are part of the curve elements coming from the wall. This way, everything is connected and part of the same structure. Inviting people to see the space and feel its chocolate wooden curves, it breaks the monotony of a normal office building entrance.

The curves in my country’s mountains, In the sinuous flow of its rivers, In the beloved woman’s body.” Located in the middle of a commercial area and surrounded by restaurants and coffee shops, the office building entrance was designed to show the difference between a commercial space and an office building. Simple and clean lines, the pure white color gives a sense of organization and modernity. The circulation space at the ground floor and the lift lobbies of other floos are still defined by the curve, bringing both spaces together. A private office has been designed at the 7th floor of the same building, to be the space for a fashion company. This 350 square meter office is divided in two meeting rooms, two private offices and an open working space. The big glass doors used to close each space can easily be opened to bring all the spaces together. Combining different materials and warm colors, where all the details were carefully thought and the furniture was chosen in order to create a modern and unique space where fashion will grow.

TOMSON TIANJIN JINWAN PLAZA 2014. TIANJIN - CHINA LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
on going
(in collaboration with BAKH Architecture)
Concept Design
Bringing nature to the center of an existing complex in Tianjin, China. What really defines this landscape project, may not be the physical durability of all construction elements, but its real durability, its functionality and purposes. The structure only becomes transient when it disposes the place where it has been inserted. Surrounded by a commercial area and office towers, this green proposal brings This landscape object is mainly composed of one shape: the circle. Many circles transform the space as one singular piece with many possible leisure and entertainment activites. The main volume remains symmetric, since it is composed by many circle forms that fit together. The contrast between the new plaza and the existing classical buildings, landscape elements has been purposely put in scene. Poetical landscapes unify to one big beautiful scenery. As a green break in the city of Tianjin, the new plaza stands at the same time for contemplative and stimulative experience of free space. Robust and long-living materials are essential criteria for a successful landscape architectonic concept and the later use of the amphitheatre, which can be the place for city events and perfomances. In all seasons the landscape will result in an attractive image. At night the illuminated amphitheatre becomes an iniviting and welcoming space.

ZAMA PARK 2014. TIANJIN - CHINA LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
under construction
(in collaboration with BAKH Architecture)
Concept Design
Its aim is to group together three residential towers and a shopping mall, and create a centre of excellence focussed on the sustainable city, for the city of Tianjin, China. The architectural concept is based on the creation of an exceptional urban event: Zama Park. The architecture is in perfect harmony with the environment, which offers a panoramic view from the green balconies and the green shopping mall roof top. The contrast between the density of the towers and the fresh air of the green areas enhances the urban landscape. Each apartment (50 - 70 square meters loft) has been designed on an human scale, with large balconies where the landscape meets the architecture, creating a relation with the exterior and interior spaces. The way how the landscape integrates with the complex, lets the architetcure breathe and plays the main inspiration for this project. Elegant circular concrete benches and planters rise from the green landscape at the ground level, giving a rhythmically punctuated circulation system throughout the park. The water zone has an internal system of dynamic lighting that allows various lighting patterns. Playing the central element of the landscape, these wooden platforms floating on the water, face the main entrances to the shopping mall and welsome visitors.

XI’AN PU YU SWISSOTEL HOTEL 2012/13. XI’AN - CHINA ARCHITECTURE
under construction
(in collaboration with BAKH Architecture)
Concept Design, Schemathic Design & Detail Design
Opening in 2016, Swissotel Xi’an is situated in one of China’s most ancient, historic and fascinating destinations. Home to the world-renowned Terracotta Army, Xi’an is also famous for its many pagodas, ancient ruins, dynastic tombs and mausoleums, as well as being a modern day hub for industry and commerce. Swissotel Xi’an is located in a new mixed-use residential and commercial zone and is conveniently located for public transport to the city centre. Other important cultural and residential districts are also within easy access. The hotel offers 350 guest rooms and suites, varying in size from approximately 40m2 to 50m2, four restaurants, function and banqueting space and recreational facilities including a Purovel Spa. The inner courtyard was the main concept of this design, integrating the vertical hotel tower and its horizontal podium with the landscape that connects the building to the existing city park. Each room can fully enjoy the landscape and an amazing view of the city of Xi’An, due to the horizontal plan. The landscape is intended to be an energetic and multifunctional space that connects the hotel and the existing park. Landscaped lawn terraces wrap around the building and clever changes in level providing a variety of multi-use spaces, including an amphitheatre, for entertainment or function purposes as a wedding plaza. The amphitheatre appears as a cover of integrated strips of concrete paving, vegetation and lighting elegant elements.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART 2009. MILAN - ITALY Interior Architecture
Located in the urban centre of Milan in Italy, the Museum of Contemporary Art closes itself looking towards its inside, but still at the upper level, it opens up to the sky through large window panes on the roof. All the exhibition space has been designed to expose works of Richard Serra, David Salles, Alexander Calder, Michael Heizerm Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, all becoming part of the museum’s permanent collection. The architectural shape of the building has to do with the articulation of the seven floors, all carefully designed to create space for four permanent exhibitions. While is integrated a coffee shop, an auditorium and the museum library shop on the lower floors, is proposed that exhibition floors communicate discreetly with the outside through a large curtain wall spanning across three floors. The double and triple ceiling makes the space flow high, allowing an integrated spacial communication through the various floors. Influenced by Iberian Architecture and integrating dynamic layouts and straight lines at each level, the building is coated with travertine, a local material that contributes for a smart urban integration.

Design Competition & Master Thesis
The purpose of this study is to develop an architectural project proposal for a dwelling that meets the basic human conditions within the Contest OS House - Open Source House Design Competition, according to a sustainable concept. We seek to understand and propose an architecture that may effectively respond to a situation of high socio-economic deprivation, and consider how architecture can become a flexible tool to help solving basic problems of human condition in the field of housing, in a sustainable and resource-saving manner. Thus, the aim is to study how architecture can improve people’s quality of life whenever they confront precarious situations. We aim to assess the conditions of the site for this proposal - Ghana, considering intervention solutions that can minimize house living crisis in this country. This final Master Degree project, presenting a proposal for housing in the context of architecture and social development, begins by participating in the Contest OS House, focuses on the Case Study of Ghana and is based on an analysis of living conditions of the population that belongs to the emerging middle class of the country. With this study, I intend to launch a contribution to a debate about issues of housing and its architectural design in the contingency context and economic fragility. To paraphrase Cameron Sinclair, we believe that “where resources and expertise are scarce, the innovative and sustainable design may make the difference in people’s lives”, and help to minimize the social housing problem in some countries in the world, as well as the housing crisis that actually affects Ghana. bamboo details

IN THE NATURE 2009. MILAN - ITALY Scenography
It may seem as if we were looking for the shopping centre in the middle of the forest. This was the very beginning concept for integrating nature into commercial spaces, creating a more liveable and sustainable architecture. Amidst the great amount and movement of people and the road traffic around it, big commercial spaces remain looking inside themselves, almost closed and ignoring its exterior and natural integration. In turn, this project aims to conceive a new way of living inside commercial spaces, as it seeks for more aesthetic and sustainable results as its borders brake down and leave the Nature go inside the building. It is as if visitants and customers walk along and shop in more natural integrated and liveable spaces, making good use of a sustainable new architecture. As a result, is managed a good integration of nature into commercial space, in this case situated in the fringe area of Milan in Italy. In this proposal, Nature brought inside the commercial space became the principal element of inspiration, also contributing to create a good role-play, letting the interior space breath better. The aim is a sort of a game, where Nature and Architecture, both win while managing good integration for commercial spaces.

SCENOGRAPHY 2009. LISBON - PORTUGAL Scenography
The proposed solution represents the conversion of the old factory buildings of cod liver oil, located in Almada, Portugal, into a global dynamic and ephemeral building. When considering the building as somewhat a temporary space, we may still be rethinking and redefining architecture as an idea to rebuild the old space. In this case, we have an existing old building converted into a minimal structure where human being may live, shelter and rest. What really defines this type of intervention, may not be the physical durability of all construction elements, but its real durability, its functionality and purposes. The structure only becomes transient when it disposes the place where it has been inserted. We may consider it as a modular construction, being developed from multiplied elements, and able to neatly aggregate multiple modules. This architectural object is composed of various geometric shapes, all designed and fit taking into account human scale. The global volume remains symmetric, since it is composed by two identical shape forms that fit together, each aggregating to the other by a relating fixture. Each module has been designed on an human scale, enabling an easy interaction with visiting people, and still integrate adequate spaces for resting and sightseeing. According to the perishable, temporary and mobile nature of this proposal, it is important to highlight in the experienced environment, the way how the building turns a temporary object in that place, plays an action and remains as a memory.

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Some examples of graphic work I have developing during free time: An architecture office has been represented at GBC Exhibition Shanghai 2012. GBC is China’s leading exhibition and conferences for green buildings. The objective was to create an exhibition space (4m by 4m) and to design a poster with a compilation of their work. The Portuguese Society for Simulation in Health Sciences logo, set on a white or black background (depending on the use), consists of a colorful curve and the three capital letters S P S in blue, white or black color.
