SITE PLAN

STUDENT VILLAGE :

WAGNER HILLS RESIDENCE AND PUBLIC STUDY AREAS For this project our client being NUST charged us to design a student village for tertiary students in the vicinity of Windhoek West. The village would serve as a way for students to interact with Windhoek West Community whilst still achieving comfortability away from their homes. The aim of the project design was to make the village the pull factor for people to NUST and Windhoek West since there were fewer recreational areas around the vicinity of our target demographic; undergraduate, part-time/ employed students and post graduate students with families. From site analysis there was a problem with noise and privacy since the site was quite visible and traffic on Bach Street did

not facilitate either. Owing to this the site was partitioned into layers of privacy and noise, then we allocated each part with a building serving as residence and a particular function (i.e. commercial, Educational etc.). The design of the village was then broken down into five residences which we each designed individually and we then designed the site plan and food kiosk collectively. In addition, the food kiosk would serve as a marker and gathering space for both Windhoek West Community and students. The residence I designed (Wagner Hills) was then located at the back of our site opposite the Hotel School, this edifice was found to be in the private and less noisier part of our site.

The layers of privacy were then turned into a grid in the design phase of the residence since Wagner street runs nearby the site and opposite there was Stadia an educational facility. Thus, the edifice was then fitted with a public interior and exterior study area for students in the vicinity.

The layers of privacy then were introduced too to the floors with ground floor being public, first floor semi-public and the last floor private. The ground floor is at the same level as the NUST Hotel school for facilitated access for students who are wheelchair bound, the units on the ground floor are self-catered only having access to the public study area. The public study area is adjacent to lecture room which opens up to increase the study area during exam season. The first floor contains communal kitchen, gaming area and shared units inspired by the current room arrangement in NUST Hostels. The second floor hosts the communal laundry room, drying area and bachelor flats for postgraduate couples.

The building steps 2 metres backward per floor to create an amphitheatre form since the western façade faces the village’s communal mini sports field, this allows students to watch the games on the exterior corridor and enables passive surveillance of units since it is visible from court who enters the units. Since the ground floor is elevated 2m, students with disability have great top view of the sports which was achieved without a lift.

perforated brick walls; steel and branches shading devices to help cope with the solar gain. On our western façade the building receives shading from the afternoon sun by the shadows surrounding building overcast.

The residence balconies are made out of tripled glazed colourful glass to emphasize the vibrancy that is a student community. Wagner Hill has a reinforced concrete frame structure with brick and glass infill walls, the residence has

WEEKEND RETREAT In-between worlds Weekend retreat is a residential building away from the city for our client to withdrawal from the city momentum on a holidays. The residence is located in Elisenheim adjacent the Klein Windhoek River. The design of the building started with trying to envision a modern home in the middle of the savannah then trying to link with the spirit of the place and the only surrounding infrastructure being a Wood cutters workshop, as well as a monastery about 1 km away from site. Then came the inspiration of creating two different zones in the residence connected by a common area, which came about the name “In-between Worlds”. This name rose to the fact that the river which runs

alongside the site connects Elisenheim with Klein Windhoek which both have distinct architecture styles. During the conception phase, the construction site was in a small clearing between trees nearby the river so that the building can be hidden. This would allow people and cattle who trail on the riverbed to not be disturbed by the view of the building and the client could enjoy the river from the comfort of his home with natural shading from trees. The residence caters for two people with enough space for guests over for dinner. The building has its long axis oriented westwards however it receives shading from nearby trees and the exposed areas have high density for thermal

comfort in winter since there is lack of electricity currently on site for warming and cooling. The eastern wing of the residence was inspired by the huts in the north so the walls were made with rammed earth with a flat roof. The in between place is the promenade that was inspired by that in Swakopmund it connects the modern architecture with the colonial architecture, that is at the lower part. The western wing is round masonry building cladded with grey clay shingles in the exterior and a mansard roof with clay shingles as well making the wall and the roof one element. This aids in hiding the building since the shingles helped it camouflage among the trees trunks.

The western wing has a double volume space with an upper floor where the study is found and the basement floor that is the suit. The eastern openings were oriented Southeast so that the reflected from the east can be used to illuminate the room without letting the entire structure heat up too much. These openings frame the exterior view and allow the savannah to enter the building.

Structures MY PLACE

My place is my first design project which was to create a structure for one person. The design then followed with an instrospective manner of what I would find pleasurable in a space for myself.

TOP VIEW

Inspired by sea shells in the film “Moana”, this structure has an organic form with the interior being the habitable space which is the most precious place like a pearl in the sea clams. The structure was made with sticks and wire and the sticks meet at the end of the structure where they point the viewers eyes into the sitting and thinking space, our pearl. This was chosen because I wanted a spacious place were I can sit or lie down and contemplate on life. My Place is a beautiful structure which helped me as an architecture student discover more about creativity.

AVIS PAVILLION

EASTERN VIEW OF MODEL

The brief for the pavilion was to provide a resting place for hikers around the dam. The pavilion is also to provide a meditation and gathering space for hikers. The design was then inspired by the shade of a tree where I sought refuge after climbing the hill which the pavilion would be mounted. During the site visit dog walkers, bird watchers and lovebirds and people wishing to exercise were found walking around the site and they needed a place to rest.

The pavilion has an organic form made out of white coated steel, it is welded on concrete footing which serves as well as sits for the hikers. The structure rises in height following the landscape so that it interacts directly with the site. The structure has two sides one more open to act as a gathering space and the smaller on which accommodates less people to act as a meditational space. The structure being open allows bird watchers to spot birds since the structure is nearby many trees and rock outcrops which they tend to live in. The visibility of what is in the pavilion also helps other hikers come to the rescue of anyone in danger inside the pavilion since the area is not so safe after the

guards at the parking left. The steel structure has slits to allow free flow of air and the slits provide a suitable place to lock bicycles onto. The slits also provide the shading at different parts of the day whilst allowing light enter the space to provide the same kind of shading one would experience under a tree.

INFO-KIOSK: NUST COVID-19 Information Kiosk Commissioned by NUST this project brief was to create a space for students and NUST visitors to be informed more on the university as well as all the COVID – 19 regulations alongside with the actions the university is taking to combat it. The kiosk was to be located in the back side of the NUST lower campus nearby DASP. The information kiosk is a temporary structure mounted on concrete piers and pad foundation. The structure has three parts which were developed after some massing models each part is made of a different material and the center piece is repurposed shipping container that connects with a wooden structure in a split floor. The third piece is mounted on the shipping container and acts as a mezzanine floor where the Kiosk attendants keep their storage.

MEZZANINE PLAN

Access to the mezzanine floor is through the cockpit which has a folding ladder to reduce the amount of space taken inside the container. The container also has lockers for NUST paramedic students as well as sits so that students queue up inside and extend to the exterior where there is already sits so the queue extends naturally whilst keeping COVID-19 regulations. The container is left open during the day for free flow of ventilation and traffic since the kiosk is located in the current path students use most thus forcing them to enter the kiosk and sanitize their hands. There are also exterior sanitizing stations for students who do not enter the kiosk.

REAR ELEVATION

This design was great since the location of the site meant that students upon entry on the lower campus back area would find the kiosk which would be a great addition owing to the fact that the new NUST Postgraduate gate is found opposite the site.

ONGAVA CORNER MARKET

City of Windhoek Informal Market Container Project RESEARCH SHOWS THAT 67% OF WORK IS FROM THE INFORMAL MARKET SO THEY CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO THE MAJORITY OF NAMIBIA’S ECONOMY THUS DASP PROPOSES A RETRO FIT SHIPPING CONTAINER TO HELP AID THE VENDORS OF OKURYANGAVA TAXI RANK 80 TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE WITH ALL THE COVID RESTRICTIONS WITHOUT HAVING TO RELOCATE THE MARKET WHICH COULD BRING CONFLICT BETWEEN THE CITY OF WINDHOEK AND THE USERS OF THE MARKET AS THE NEW MARKET COULD NOT PERHAPS CATER TO THE SAME AMOUNT OF CUSTOMERS THEY CURRENTLY HAVE ON ONGAVA STREET.

22

ANA MARIA TENENTE DA SILVA

LOCATION OF SITE

The site was divided with the upper portion being the clothing stalls and lower down the hill is the food stalls since they would be directly opposite the school so the kids and alumni of the school will have a place to eat during lunch or break time. The proposed design keeps the existing partitioning of the site space however, since the shipping containers take up the space of existing stalls that area was redesigned to give the clothing vendors the clothing rails, chairs, tables and shading they asked during the survey. The roof of the clothing sale area is linear to differentiate it from other stalls so each product has their own “aisle “. The other stalls have curve linear shading devices and they also mimic the shape of trees to add the idea of trees when people walk or drive up Ongava street since the site is the first thing one sees upon approaching the hill so the roof also acts as a marker. The structure holding the roof serves also for support for wooden sits which are nailed to steel bars welded to columns. The proposed design for the site is that the entire area where the market would be it would be paved and the area of the stalls would have red pavement to differentiate the path from the stalls therefore, people can know till where the market extends since it is an open market and has no boundary wall. The site has as well a playground with 2 sets of swings and monkey bars which is seen from all stalls so that somebody could be employed to watch over the children, thus the market thus creates job opportunities. The playground acts as additional recreation space for local children, the students and the children of the vendors so they can work without worrying about their children’s safety. The containers serve as storage and also sanitary stations and charging stations as well as two toilets. The market serves as well as a gathering space for the children and people of Okuryiangava as the local children lack places to play and they play in inadequate areas so the market gives back to the community in the sense that market.

MODEL OF FRONT VIEW OF MARKET

The containers were fitted with ramps for easier access to the disabled, the ramps have footing which are also seen in elevation. the container was divided into 3 sections for the toilets for male and female alike and the partitioning walls are made out of insulation which is sandwiched in between coloured composite plastic. The ceiling was added with some insulation and gypsum board, the electrical connections for lights run in the insulation. the toilets open outward for easier access for the disabled. The sanitation station is a walk through which opens towards the existing footpath so people in market sanitise their hands when entering and leaving the market. The sanitation station has the toilet storage beneath the sinks to optimise storage and maximise space usage. There is glass shelf opposite the basins were phones could be locked in whilst charging. The stalls downhill also provide extra space for new vendors so the market can expand in a more adequate way whilst still giving vendors a beautiful and clean space to work to maintain their rights and dignity of work since their work makes the nation great.
