COVER LETTER Dear Sir/ Madam REF: Master’s in Architecture application My name is Ana and I am determined in pursuing a Master’s degree in architecture in the year 2024 at your institution. I currently completing my honours degree in architecture at the Namibian University of Science and Technology, if God wills it I will have my honours degree completed by the end of 2023 and attending my graduation ceremony in April 2024. When I was a child I drew when I was bored or had the time for it as I grew older during a construction site visit for our home with my dad, back in Luanda, I learnt what an architect was someone who designs buildings and cities – which in reality I was wrong, it is more than that. I then wanted to solve the problems in my country seen in the urban setting such as inadequately built homes, old buildings being abandoned, very hot buildings, crowded classrooms, and a dirty city. Along my highschool studies I was introduced to other fields such as science, accounting, entrepreneurship, and computer science I then chose science in my career to help me in pursuing architecture which now I realise that architecture incorporates all of these fields. Upon my first interview to enter the architecture degree I was asked what I wanted to specialise in and I said Landscape Architecture (not really knowing it that well) I took precedence of a romance movie I watched “Something New” well later during my degree and my internship at Kerii Architects and Associate Designers I got fairly acquainted with it as well as urban design and project management. I have the intent to further specialise in urban design and project management in the future so I can end up designing cities and managing projects after obtaining my architect’s license. However, I am still in question of how we design buildings. In my interview I was also asked what I liked about architecture or who was my favourite architect which I had none at the time yet all I could think about was the Gothic Architecture found in Harry Potter, which was my favourite movie of all time because of the setting that the story portrayed. In my third year of the degree I did an adaptive reuse building which I loved and I am currently working for my honours design project on a heritage preservation project which has been quite interesting is like we are the FBI’s of the past. As I am designing I am learning the facets of colonial architecture but more importantly I am talking to the building. Well I came to find out what I loved about the buildings in Harry Potter was the character that they had which differed from any other building I have ever seen similar to heritage buildings. I would love to gain more understanding and knowledge of the design and construction of such relics as well as create my own buildings which talk to people. As I am progressing in my studies and “knowledge” in architecture “knowledge” because in architecture there is really no such thing as you know it all, is like you are less confused on certain items as with a building aging so does the knowledge within it increase so the practice of learning never ends. Well perhaps I still am not clear on certain aspects on architecture, design for me is a language which I am still a babe yet I found out that the more I study the more I understand architecture and the more knowledge I gain in structuring the procession of my career. Well I think that doing my masters in architecture will help me in acquiring more knowledge and perhaps I could further my understanding of the field and improving my skills so that I could be of a better service to society. Therefore, I believe that I would be a great addition to your program in the year 2024. Nevertheless, please feel free to contact me on the details entailed on the CV attached to this letter and I am available for an interview upon request.

ARCHITECT’S DWELLING Architect’s dwelling is a residential and office space in Windhoek West, Namibia the site is an abandoned plot with overgrown grass. Then from the first site visit the inspiration for the building was a barn in the grassland taken precedent the form by the works of Design 40x40 Studio the building has a linear form and circulation. The building long axis is oriented west-south and the shorter one-south north to reduce its solar heat gain and maximize on lighting during the day. The building and site is split in half where one portion serves as a residence and the other part an architectural firm. The residential side is on the right side is more enclosed for privacy and the firm is more open and has a playground that serves as a public space for the community for the site to give back to the community and not just be an area of criminal activity which it is currently feared.

N Site Plan Eastern Elevation

The building form was made with a steel portal frame and the enclosure is one element with the roof made out of klip Lok sheeting with a coat of chromadec paint. The residences contain a basement floor that serves as a double garage, the ground floor has a double volume space in the living room, whereas the bedrooms and study are found in the first floor. The office and the residences point of intersection is a retaining gabion wall which serves as a fire wall between the structures.

i OPEN UP ! South West Breweries gallery is, a mixed use Art gallery. It is a refurbished building in the Old Breweries Craft Market, Tal Street, Windhoek, Namibia. The existing building sited at the corner of Tal Street, did not respond well to the corner and being in a commercial district it’s façades were not much permeable creating a dead corner in one of Windhoek’s historical district. CONCEPT - “OPEN UP !” The building concept rooted in transparency (inspired by the Pompidou Centre in Paris) was intended to bring celebration and permeability of the structure to reduce the line of the exterior and interior (see collage). The new façade was designed to allow visual permeability on the western façade during the daytime then during afternoon when the sun is blazing, it closes yet allows some sun rays to penetrate to allow natural lighting and ventilation. Since the façade closes and opens the users get to decide to open the façade when the internal environment needs it then the building envelope on the exterior is a direct representation of what happens in the interior making the life encompassed by the building disseminate onto Tal Street and the craft market. The building ground floor was changed with new additions such as ablutions block, a multipurpose workshop which convert into an exhibition space when needed (see exploded diagram on right). The old vertical circulation was removed and a new one which Existing building is lockable was introduced in the eastern wing. The building old bar was revamped and garage doors were inserted to open up the façade on the western wing as well as a beer garden was introduced the perimeter of the site boundary which was once a dead corner thus activing the street edge. The second floor also hosts art exhibition and a restaurant with views to the surrounding neighborhood. The third, fourth floor are being used as apartments for the artisans and tourists are held with the 4th floor eastern wing southern corner being a dry yard. The central atrium pace is used for exhibitions which are hanged as well as additional space to ventilate the structure through the stack effect. The western wing in the fourth floor has a roof top garden.

BEYOND BORDERS This is an urban intervention in the informal settlement of Havana, this is a smaller community which we surveyed called Kabila C which through participation of children of the settlement a framework was implemented for improving children safety. The children in these community will then have a sense of ownership of the place they helped designed and create. In my portion of the framework I took Havana Primary School and the adjacent streets as the area of interest.

The goal was to create an open block campus for the school which would later drive future design of educational facilities in Namibia to serve as mixed-use buildings afterhours which cater for community needs for better gathering spaces, meeting places, and football fields. The implementation of both a shared and a play street was introduced in the existing streets and the layout of residences was changed as well. The addition of new play spaces along paths and removing school fence to have an open campus block design was implemented so other children of community could make use of the playground and other facilities in the school.

Immediate intervention (what could be done now- establish routes and ervens)

The play facilities were designed in addition to green landscapes and vertical gardens to help increase agricultural production on site as the school currently feeds children in the community which are less privileged. This in turn helps reduce hunger in the informal settlement as well as create job opportunities for the ground keepers. There are affordable housing blocks bordering the schools which serve for volunteer foreign student aids, teachers as

REGENERATION

The theme of the concept is REGENERATION taken from the principle of being born again found in John 3:3-8. How the man was dead in the spirit and through the God’s grace was reborn in spirit when man reconciled with its creator then it reconciled with men. This reconciliation brought about the ability for them to have fellowship/ relationship which is what the design illustrates the rebirth of the ALte Feste from its death and allowing users to engage in the procession of its life then creating a space where users can have discussions and learn about this history. Since everything comes from the heart the courtyard could be seen as the heart of the building which is linked to all other rooms and buildings either spatially of visuallly.

The served and servant relationship between the Independence Museum and Alte Feste was maintained in a different way as they now share services and delivery access in the northern side were ramps were provided to link those buildings. The exhibition spaces reduced and the implementation of workshops on the eastern wing as in the original plan many workshops happened there and I wanted to maintain the previous usage except now for the exploration of Namibian crafts. The eastern veranda was also reestablished to link the rear of the building with the sports field. The eastern veranda is where they open air crafts by women and men as well as serving as a stage for performances and lectures due to the implementation of flexible mixed use furniture.

All the new structures serve as a backdrop for the building as they highlight it greatly which is why the skywalk is seen in all facades. The courtyard has both the genocide memorial and the craft market which are two completely different functions which was intentionally placed as in the concept of spiritual rebirth from scriptures the new man is still in conflict with the old self and the recognizing of the past self and its errors aids him in moving away from that. The reason being I wanted people to come to a point where they forgive each other and also appreciate these buildings. The courtyard concept came from the Omaruru song which speaks of the genocide in a symbolic way that the necklace which broke is symbolism for the scattered community which was once joined then scattered in the desert with no one to join them. The memory boxes thus were organized in this grid were some are randomized with seats and the main one opens into the space where they after existing the box could have discussions. The boxes have holes on the top which is resembles the bullets shot overhead to scare the women and children away by the German soldiers into the desert where some died and some then found

refuge in a city. The Narrative of Space They enter and walk into a journey marked by lighting showcasing the building the light guides users which are visually impaired feel the light and hear the wood creek as the move in the smell of the clay in the wall and realise that there’s clay in the room they touch. They have option to leave to path into the Courtyard where the rest are congregating a series of mirrors and sits discussing or they continue the path which the light deems to nothing (in the NE tower) and the joy and light of courtyard disappear. Yet the silence in the room is a remainder of the people whose lives were lost of harmed through the colonial regime reminding and paying respect to the lost time of Namibia ‘s darkest history in it they remember and see the graves yet the silence is filled by their presence symbolising that the lives lost were today for their freedom and not just that but to remember that we’re joined by a common past.

WORK EXPERIENCE

PROJECTS UNDER KERRI ARCHITECTS & ASSOCIATE DESIGNERS I have participated in many projects under Kerii Architects and Associate designers in which some projects I was project manager such as in residential design, home and office renovations and I was part of the design team for urban projects in which I did camp site masterplans in Oranjemund as well as designs for lodges. I participated in public and commercial facilities as well as interior design projects. I then went on board and started projects on my own through Legacy Designs Inc in which I designed residential and public buildings. Legacy outsource their work to Kingdom Legacy Ministries in which we offer our services free of charge and we raise funds to expand God’s kingdom and change people’s lives through the provision and edification of homes, schools, community centers and churches.

Other Interests In my free time I draw, read, perform spoken word poetry with my friends as well as explore art exhibitions. I also ventured into graphic design in my third year of university which is when I started making collages for concept representation and now that I see it I really enjoy it so I use collages as a form of expression because I always have these ideas but somehow I cannot explain them in sketch form so I started collaging. It does not seem comprehensible but the art of collaging had various phases and its abstraction is what in my opinion give power to convey an array of messages. Therefore, the cover as well as the works selected begin with a collage it shows my design thinking conceptually which as abstract as it is to the viewer for me is a guideline on what to do. I portrayed my design thinking and “unraveled” my mind to illustrate that I could bring a fresh outlook into your program which could further be sharpened through admission in your master program. As stated above I still need to learn a great deal which self-guided learning under supervised research could aid.
