As I sat down to write this letter for the Annual Report, I had the opportunity to reflect with pride on what our school community accomplished this past year, with the completion of the Creative Commons. We took important steps towards full enrollment by building our last set of classrooms and greatly enhanced our ability to deliver expanded arts and multi-media curriculum in modern, versatile “maker space” facilities that would be the envy of many people in the entertainment industry. In so doing we also put in place infrastructure for what will be our most ambitious capital project to date – completing our campus with the construction of a new state-of-the-art gymnasium. But perhaps most importantly, from the Board’s perspective, we raised the funds necessary to complete this past year’s project by relying heavily on a new generation of Vistamar donors. So on behalf of my fellow trustees, I want to especially thank each of you that stepped up and supported these efforts. We are also extremely proud of, and grateful for, everyone’s dedicated involvement in the search for Vistamar’s next Head of School. This was just completed with the appointment of Chris Bright as Vistamar’s third Head of School, who starts in July 2018. As the saying goes, we couldn’t have done it without you, and we appreciate the deep level of commitment from so many members of our community during this important process. Looking ahead, the Board is deeply involved in its governance role (in collaboration with faculty and staff) in transition planning for onboarding the next leader of our school community, while at the same time partnering with Karen Eshoo to make her final year at Vistamar a successful one. I also want to take this opportunity express the deep gratitude of the Board to Karen for her excellent stewardship of the school these past seven years, as well as her tireless dedication to serving all members of our community and being a true champion of our school’s mission. I know each of you will join us in thanking her for her leadership of the school, and wishing her the greatest of success in the next stages of her career. As excited as we are for the next steps in Vistamar’s journey under Chris Bright, so too must we acknowledge how deeply missed Karen will be by the Vistamar community. We are fortunate to have had her guidance in helping lead Vistamar into its second decade. Sincerely,

Mike Armitage Chair, Vistamar Board of Trustees

HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Vistamar communityAs a historian, I love looking backwards in time to analyze events that help us make better sense of our world now. As Head of School, I also love to engage in visioning processes that allow us to see the myriad versions of our world as it might become. We continue to design new programs and ways of being that will best prepare our students for those possible futures. This Annual Report is a look back at an incredible year that, once again, defined Vistamar School as the nimble, forward-thinking school we were born to be. It is also a celebration of the milestones that position us for the next chapter in our history, one that will continue to be marked by innovation, inclusion, and success. With the summer construction of the Creative Commons, our academic campus is now complete! This project was the result of the hard work and generosity of so many members of the Vistamar community. This demonstrated the pride we all share in the accomplishments of our stellar Visual & Performing Arts program and our confidence that this program will continue to impact our community. When you come to campus for arts events, you will see how students and teachers have embraced the opportunity to create in these professional-level studios. Walk back to the Creative Commons to see all of the amazing work born each day. As I reflect on nearly seven years of leadership here, I am proud to have partnered with colleagues, trustees, parents, students and alumni on these and other initiatives that defined Vistamar as the school that challenges the status quo, and that provides an education that is different and better than any other high school in Los Angeles. Our entire program continues to develop and thrive thanks to the innovative and visionary leadership of my colleagues. I am most grateful to be a member of a community that understands the need to examine and sometimes change what we do in order to preserve our deepest values and remain truly Vistamarian. In the coming years we will see more program innovations, stronger enrollment and alumni connections, and a major remodel of our gymnasium. Thanks to all of you, Vistamar is ready for these challenges. Your unwavering support for the soul of this institution advances our commitment to providing a transformative experience for each and every student who walks through our doors. All of us should be rightfully proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I, for one, cannot wait to see what comes next! Sincerely,

02

Dr. Karen E. Eshoo Head of School

VISTAMAR FUND These unrestricted annual gifts allow the School to direct funds to areas of greatest need. They are the first and most important gifts we ask of current and past parents, alumni, trustees, employees, and friends. It is with much gratitude that we acknowledge those who made gifts to the Vistamar Fund this past year.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF

LEADERSHIP The Posse Foundation, founded in 1989, partners with colleges and universities nationwide to provide four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. Each ‘Posse’ (multicultural teams of about 10 students) provides a built in support system resulting in high success and graduation rates. Posse Scholars are active student leaders who meet regularly with university faculty and administration to discuss issues like education, race, and social responsibility. They contribute to the overall diversity of thought and culture at their colleges and universities - integral cornerstones of a Vistamar education. Vistamar graduated 12 Posse Scholars since its first graduating class in 2008. Thousands of candidates in Los Angeles undergo a rigorous selection process with college and university admissions’ representatives to secure a spot at an Posse partner institution of their choice. Los Angeles Posse partner institutions include: Bucknell University, Dickinson College, Grinnell College, Hobart and William Smith College, Kalamazoo College, Middlebury College, Northwestern University, Pepperdine University, Tulane University, University of California-Berkeley, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. “By simply attending Vistamar I was prepared. Vistamar allowed me to grow not only academically but socially,” said Ericka Taylor ’11 on how Vistamar prepared her for the Posse selection process. “Posse is a merit based leadership scholarship and by the time I was a senior at Vistamar, I was already the editor-in-chief of the yearbook, a leader on Student Events and Activities Club, founded a dance team, and created VistaCrew with my senior class”

At Vistamar we foster our students’ creative habits of mind by affording them experiences in the arts as doers, creators, makers, and consumers. Our faculty of “working artists” emphasizes the process of creativity, rather than simply the product of the endeavor. This feature alone distinguishes Vistamar, and the fortunate benefit of this approach, is that every student—in some way or fashion—considers himself or herself to be creative. The summer of 2017, Vistamar built the Creative Commons in the southwest quadrant of campus, creating a home for the visual and performing arts disciplines. This new space will help further plans for our emerging technology, robotics, broadcasting, and filmmaking programs. Our plans include state-of-the-art features which will enable Vistamar to ‘leap frog’ competing programs. This space includes the 2-D Visual Art Studio, the Music Studio, and the Digital Media Lab. We appreciate the support from the Vistamar community that made it possible for our students to develop inventive habits of mind, utilizing best educational practices in the most inspiring creative spaces possible in a high school setting.

CAPITAL AND RESTRICTED As enrollment at Vistamar School continues to grow, so does the need for improved and expanded facilities to provide our students with the environment they need to learn, to create and to grow into global citizens. This year we finished construction of the new Creative Commons, Vistamar’s new art classrooms. We gratefully acknowledge the participation of individuals, families, corporations and foundations for their generous gifts directed toward Vistamar School’s capital expansion projects. This year’s event included a silent and live auction, a Fund-A-Need opportunity to support the new Creative Commons, casino games and live entertainment from Haute Chile. A truly remarkable team of staff, faculty, parent volunteers and community support came together to make Blue & Gold 2017 a memorable event. We raised over $275,000 to support Vistamar School. A special thanks to our Blue & Gold 2017 co-chairs: Tess Hechmer and Stephanie Glassberg.

VISTAMAR CONNECTS COMMUNITY

“Vistamar connect might be one of the best things our community has done in a long time! I’m so happy and humbled to be a part of this group. If anyone needs life advice, mathematical advice, or hospitality advice, I’m here for you,” — BEN LITTLE ’12 ON VISTAMAR CONNECT

Last Fall, Vistamar introduced Vistamar Connect to the Vikings’ community. This new online platform allows members to connect with one other, with the hope of providing mentors, internship opportunities and job opportunities. And if you are a current senior, ask questions about college. This resource allows current seniors and alumni to start constructing their own business network. A form to seek advice, the goal of Vistamar Connect is to provide multiple resources to help prepare Vikings for when they leave the academic world. We are always looking for more members of the Vistamar Community to join and be resources for our students and alumni. Your support is greatly appreciated. Sign up at VistamarConnect.org.
