MISSION STATEMENT Vistamar School’s globally influenced curriculum and distinctly diverse learning community foster in our students intellectual engagement and a mature understanding of the world. Every day, our faculty inspires students to think critically, find connections between themselves and others, and collaborate as global citizens. We do this because we understand that academically prepared, culturally competent students are not only highly attractive to the best colleges, but more importantly, will go on to lead lives of meaning and purpose.

“

As we reflect on our 10th anniversary year, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the myriad ways in which all members of our community continue to come together to ensure the healthy growth of Vistamar School.

LETTER FROM THE

HEAD OF SCHOOL

I

love new colleague orientation every summer – not just because I have the opportunity to welcome some of the newest members of our community as the Head of School, but because I also get to be a history teacher again for a little while. The first activity I do with our new faculty and staff each year is to share the history of Vistamar School.

I like to share the story of our founders, who came together to create a high school in the South Bay that would be different from – and better than – other schools in LA. This school would be built on the understanding that excellence is predicated on diversity – of culture, of socioeconomic background, and of perspective. The program would prioritize wellness – certainly the physical wellness that comes from athletics and fitness, and equally important, social and emotional wellness that is developed and supported by strong relationships within a nurturing school culture. This school would always look to implement best practices, whether in building an innovative curriculum, attracting and retaining the best faculty who could deliver on that curriculum, or designing a campus that would promote the kinds of learning and relationships that would be essential for students’ long-term success. All of the men and women who founded Vistamar were visionary in their conception of these core values and programs, entrepreneurial in their tireless efforts to build a new school from scratch, and optimistic in their hopes and dreams for the students who would be served. As I shared with our new colleagues, and as I remind the community often in Morning Meeting, they gave every one of us the greatest gift of all: the opportunity to be together, work together, and transform one another as we make their vision for Vistamar School a reality each day.

As we reflect on our 10th anniversary year, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the myriad ways in which all members of our community continue to come together to ensure the healthy growth of Vistamar School. We earned a full-term of accreditation from CAIS-WASC because of the strength of our academic and co-curricular programs, and because of our deep and visible commitment to our mission. Colleagues, parents and students represented us at Open Houses and at events around Los Angeles to tell their Vistamar stories, helping us welcome another wonderful group of new families to our School. And as you will see in this Annual Report, generous financial support from parents, faculty, staff, and trustees, helped us surpass our fundraising goals for the 2014-2015 school year, putting us in a strong position as we look ahead to the coming year.

Sheba Posnansky

Highlighting these accomplishments is such a wonderful way to honor our founders. Continuing their legacy of vision, innovation, and generous support will ensure that their incredible work will serve students and families for decades to come. Thank you for all you do to contribute to this amazing institution!

MIÑANA-LOVELACE CHALLENGE GRANT It is unusual for an institution as young as Vistamar School to merit the level of commitment given by Alicia Miñana and Rob Lovelace, whose dedication to ensuring diversity and access to a world-class education for qualified underrepresented students has resulted in over a decade of transformational giving. This year, an anonymous benefactor generously offered to match, dollar for dollar, all donations made in the name of Alicia Miñana and Rob Lovelace for the purpose of supporting Moderated Tuition. The Miñana-Lovelace Challenge grant raised over $750,000 in funds to support diversity and access. We gratefully acknowledge the support of those who made gifts toward ensuring a place for those students at Vistamar School.

VISTAMAR SCHOOL

TIMELINE

Just a quick glance at the Vistamar timeline and some of the key events in the school’s short and successful history underscores some momentous achievements by the men and women who have served as founding trustees. Our entire Board is deeply grateful for those contributions and for setting a high standard of commitment for current trustees to emulate. There are more names than this space will allow me to single out, but Romayne Levee, Rob Lovelace, Cindy Smet, Jon Ralph, and David Hoag deserve special recognition for their contributions as former trustees and their special role in the school’s history. I am honored to say that I had an opportunity to serve as a trustee with each of them, and I am happy to note that each remains involved with and committed to Vistamar.

Looking back to the more immediate successes of the past year, I want to thank especially my fellow trustees and the entire community for their invaluable assistance in helping Vistamar achieve a full CAIS-WASC accreditation and for the successful roll-out of our beautiful World Language Commons, just two of our significant achievements over the past year. Looking ahead, I am excited by the challenges before us as we share our plans to complete the Vistamar campus and continue our growth toward full enrollment of 320 students. We want to achieve both of these goals while sustaining financial stability for the future. This will not be possible without your support, just as it was with all we have accomplished thus far. I would like to thank personally our entire community - students, parents, faculty, staff and trustees, for their contributions to our first decade. I look forward to a tremendous future for Vistamar. We cannot do it without each one of you. Warm Regards, Boys Varsity Soccer Team plays in CIF final

It appoints and evaluates the Head of School, approves and monitors the implementation of institutional strategy and policies, and provides accountability. It is with gratitude and appreciation that we acknowledge the efforts of the following men and women who have served as trustees from Vistamar’s inception to its 10th year of educating young minds.
