PROJECT DETAILS

Two residential blocks are located in the Bogafjell area in Sandnes, Norway. Fourty-five flats in various sizes where the goal is to bring together different groups of residents - young couples, singles, families as well as senior citizens. All flats are designed as to fulfil the requirements of universal design. The site of a total area of 9.380 m2 is situated on a slope with a good view of the hilly landscape. The large slope and the long and narrow plot was a great challenge for the housing design and outdoor areas. The houses are quite large in relation to the environment , characterized by smaller apartment blocks and numerous houses.

To make the houses impact on the landscape less visual and more in line with the environment, the design was created in several staged heights. Wood was used mostly for the facades , especially considering that it is the dominant construction material in the area. The public space between the 2 residential blocks consists in a balanced blend of low vegetation and playgrounds, helping achieve a good connection between the 2 buildings.

Project details The character of this area is mostly affected by the lack of continuity between the old urban tissue and the sea. The space is limited to a traffic line, placed in the back of the dock area. The only remains of a lost continuity is an unused pedestrial bridge and stairs that used to connect Ovidiu Square with the seaport. The continuity can be achieved by reconsidering this old link. The bridge - a symbol of continuity and connection. A bridge isn’t just a structure built to ensure a physical connection between two parts. A bridge is a place of interraction and imaginary voyage.

THE BRIDGE _ maintaing the old symbols and giving them new meaning _ PHYSICAL CONNECTION between the two elements that define the public space. The platform at the end of the pedestrial bridge can be used as a deck. _ PLACE OF INTERRACTION and culture, with the interior space being used for temporary exhibitions. _ SYMBOL - the seaport needs a visual architectural element associated not only with the city, but also with the sea.

ROMPETROL GAS STATION + STORE CONCEPT

The Rompetrol Group is one of the strongest companies in Romania and a stategic player in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions. At European level, Rompetrol Group has over 1000 stations in six countries (Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, France, Spain and Georgia), which operate under the brands Rompetrol, Dyneff and Litro. The “Hei” filling stations and stores projects are part of the rebranding of the Rompetrol gas comapny, based in Romania. During my time at ARHCASA4R, I worked in developing the new image and in the actual implementation of the concept. This project has 3 double gas pumps and a 190sqm urban store surface. The store has 2main areas : fast food area + bar, and a shopping area. Other functions include a small office and storage area for the staff, and two bathrooms for the store clients. The store has a glass main facade, that allows the customers to feel safer and more engaged with the surroundings. The gas station’s canopy connects with the store through a glazed element, that has, besides of the functional feature (rain protection, extra sun shield) , a visual effect.

This small filling station, situated in the center of Bucharest was the first prototype built by the russian company Artoil in Romania. Building the station and store on a limited plot, in an intersection where various rules of traffic had to be taken in consideration, was a real challenge. The station consists in 2 fuel pumps and a small store with a bathroom. The design was based on the original russian gas station concept, with adjustments based on plot area and local regulations. The apparent steel structure and vibrant colors transformed the small gas station in an architectural appearance that is difficult to miss.

CONVERSION - OFFICE BUILDING TO HOTEL - TJARNAVELLIR, ICELAND

The interior design proposal is for the hotel lobby and 2 types of apartment of a 3 floors building located close to the main airport in Iceland. The idea of converting the unused office building into a hotel came after the 2008 financial clash that affected most types of businesses. The owner wanted to use the space for a new hotel, as the building is located on the main street towards KeflavĂk airport and thusfore, many tourists, especially younger ones, that have an early flight, can spend the night there istead of the capital, situated 50km away. The proposal is influenced a lot by icelandic architecture, where materials and their chromatic are always related to the impressive landscape.

In the lobby area we used dark materials, with splashes of colors as a contrast. The owner wanted the design to have some Mondrian elements, therefore we tried to keep the design very clean and minimalistic, with the use of the clear shapes and lines. On the upper levels, the rooms are grouped in three types, 16.7sqm, 21sqm and 27sqm for disabled. The essential here was to create a comfy, young atmosphere. 2nd +3rd FLOOR hotel rooms

Bet Cafe Arena is a new Romanian company organizing sport bets which aims to become a referance name on the Romanian market. The idea was to offer the customers a new concept of agency, a sports bar as an entertainment center. Therefore, the clients can bet on diverse sporting events or play electronic machinery, while enjoying a coffee shop quality service. The bar furniture and wall elements were custom made, while the bet area chairs and bar stools were carefully chosen to fit the desired atmosphere. The logo colors are used as the main interior design pallete. Texture was also an important feature which has been taken into account - the bumpy green floor, shinny metal chairs and orange leather are elements inspired by sports and so far, have appealed to the agency’s customers.

PROJECT DETAILS The location of this project is a one-family house in central Reykjavik, Iceland. The clients wanted a new design for their main bathroom., in a clean yet modern look. The requirements were having two sinks and a large mirror area, and also having just a shower, and plenty of storage room. The main concept was to create a frame around the widest wall, that would contain the mirror and sink area and also incorporate the storage space. The mirror is an extension of the only window in this small space, making a stronger connection with the exterior garden. The shower is very modern, almost invisible, having the custom-made linear radiator as a light visual screen.

INTERIOR - “AUVA” (Social Insurance) LOBBY PROPOSAL - AUSTRIA

PROJECT DETAILS Fluidity of space was the main feature of the arhiectural concept that was developed in this project. We transformed the traditional lobby format by combining the front desk, lobby, bar, lounge area into one open, cohesive space, while refreshing the design to give it a more contemporary feel. Warm colors and clean design are a visual suggestion of the insurance company’s intentions. People relate to the curved lines of the boxes that contain the main functions, while helping direct the circulation towards the entrance and elevator areas.

FACADE DESIGN FOR CORRUGATED METAL PANELS FACTORY - BORGARNES, ICELAND

PROJECT DETAILS The use of corrugated panels in Icelandic residencial and commercial buildings facades is very wide-spread. The Limtre Virnet company is the most well known in the country for its products, and therefore, wanted a special design for it’s company’s factory, to display the endless possibilities of design with corrugated metal panels. The design aims to use all the different types of corrugated panels available and combine them in a way, so that the facade itself becomes an advertisement for the company. Therefore, the background consists in corrugated sinusoidal panels, in metallic color, with the orange panels overlay that surrounds 2 facades of the factory.

DIPLOMA PROJECT

VOLCANO MUSEUM AND RESEARCH CENTER - TRIHNUKAGIGUR VOLCANO, ICELAND

The 120m depth, bottle shaped volcano-cave is situated in Iceland. From the -120m level, one can advance on a narrow area, through the south-west, reaching a total of 200m depth from the mouth of the cave. This unique natural chamber was formed 3.000-4.000 years ago, when the volcano interior became empty. The formation itself is one of the most interesting and extensive in the world. The walls show fine formations of lava that remained intact since its initial formation.

“three peeks volcano”

The existence of the museum has been known since the beggining of the last century, but it is believed that speleologist B. Stefansson was the first person sunken into its interior in 1974. Since then, a relatively large number of researchers went inside the crater and revealed it’s secrets. In 1991, the interior and exterior of Thrihnukagigur volcano was measured and mapped out, to fully understand the geological context. After these researches, the local authorities came to the conclusion that they want to pursue the possibility of access from the public and tourists.

URBAN PUBLIC SPACE SCENE The need for prayer in the Islamic community is what causes the onset of the mosques. They can be of different sizes - small or large call Jami Masjid-they all have a role in the social life of Istanbul. The name itself will help us better understand the building: Jami, "meeting place" and masjid, "surface, place or area where people can worship God." Taking on the concept of atrio-"sahn"-meeting place, the generating idea of the project is a reinterpretation of the concept of public space, passing from being a introverted to opening to the outside, an area associated with the city, an invitation for every citizen to be part of the show. Visitors pass being the "urban actors" in the new scene created for them, against the background of the same Istanbul Modern.

ACCESSIBILITY Closed buildings are drilled from the strong Islamic heritage, but the thoughts of modern Istanbul citizens require a new vision of architecture. The people of Istanbul are not characterized by words like "closed", "shy" or "introverted" but for "business", "communicator" and "extroverted." The city does not need public spaces open only to a group of people, but accessible public spaces, especially when it comes to the waterfront, which has this problem. THE SENSE OF IDENTITY The project seeks to resolve an appealing blend given in sense of identity, Arab culture, the premises viewed from a contemporary perspective, rethinking a local value, the "pattern" as a concept, with its design and function working around the public and private sense. This presence is considered a value itself, but reconsidered and resolved with contemporary, universal, but with strong roots.

LATTICE DECORATION The decoration contributes to the creation of a continuos sense of space, which is the distinctive sign of the islamic architecture. In the islamic architecture, the space is defined by surface and from the surface it’s articulated by decoration, so there is a close connection betwen space and decoration. It is the variaety and richness of decoration, with it’s endless permutations, that defines the buildings, insted of the structural elements, that normally aren’t apparent. Using materials that reflect light and through the repetition of designs, the contrast of textures and the plans manipulation, the istalmic decoration becomes lush and complex. Water and light are both very important elements of the decoration, generating aditional layers which transform the space.

HOLIDAY CABIN - BREAZA, ROMANIA

The program called for a 10 room cabin with a public area that includes a lounge, a restaurant and small office. The solution consists in five two-storey modules and a one-storey lounge area. The separation between the private and the public is best seen from an exterior view. The five modules emerge from the ground as the public platform in partially covered by land, remainding of the importance of reconnecting with the landscape. The way you enter this building was a very important aspect of the project, and a major reason for burring it and is preservation of the surroundings. The spectacular view over the mountains was my first reaction to seeing the site. The platform from the entrance level and the opened volumes reinforces this gesture.

2V PROJECT DETAILS TWO VOLUMES, ONE HOUSE. Each of the volumes represents the personality of it’s owners: the opened, clean, concrete box is inspired by the feminine figure, while the introverted, bold colored volume connects with it’s masculine owner. The light, glazed bond between the volumes makes them a unit, without interfearing with each of their special atributes.

RESIDENTIAL ANSAMBLE - DRUMUL TABEREI, BUCHAREST

The project’s concept was creating a residential area that offers a large range of apartment types. As a visual and auditive barrier, a 7 storey two-sided building block is situated paralel to the main street. The remaining large open space is transformed in a semi-burried platform that contains the parking space for both apartments and commercial space. The service platform is perforated by large patios. Five volumes - containing different types of apartments - are rising from the platform at different levels. As a vertical mirrored interpretation of the patios, the linear apartment block has “perforations” used as semi-public spaces - neighbourhood social area.

BUCHAREST MUSEUM - HYSTORICAL CENTER, BUCHAREST PROJECT DETAILS The site is situated between the Lipscani Street and the Gabroveni Street, in a protected historical area. CONCEPT crush = atraction.collaps.chaos. The concept comes fromthe idea of making the past collaps into a present that tries to make room for an interesting path throughout the museum. The explosion that takes place in the interior of the plot stays still, like stoping time into a certain moment. Following the path, the visitors sensations are getting stronger, amplified by the iminent sensation of collaps.

From an architectural point of view, the proposed building distinguishes itself from the liniar path of the historical comercial zone of the old Bucharest and tries to virtualy support, to lateraly push the 2 side buildings , producing a space dilatation necesary for the path between the 2 streets. On this exterior museum pathway, the historical foundations, important for the entire area, are being saved. The materials used are neutral, amplifing the “crush. In opposition with the static volumetriy in daytime, at night, the entire musem comes to life, using light and color.
