FORM DEVELOPMENT

Manipal is an international university.

Students and companies from all over the world comes to

Manipal. As a result various international and national level

functions such as exhibition, concerts etc happens in Manipal. •

For display of products and ideas by various companies and

Geometry made of 3 curves

students ,an eye catching pavilion is required. The main idea was to create a

deployable structures that can be used on multiple places for multiple uses in Manipal and

works well in crowded areas.

The structure is made of 7 triangles.

These triangles create a

minimalistic character to the structure.

Movement around the structure when placed on crowded locations

The streamline shape of the structure allows the crowd to pass through the structure easily.

Extra supports are given to the structure by connecting the top corners of the triangular unit.

Possible circulation from all 4 sides

Arrangement 1 (Open Space)

Sheets can be used to cover the structure.

Depends on the use transparent or opaque sheets can be used.

Various patterns can be created by using different materials on the covering sheet.

CAFE REDESIGN - INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT

4th Year

6

LOCATION : MANIPAL

Total Built up area: 228 sqm

The idea of this project is to create a self service cafe with an

atmosphere which is totally in contrast with all the other

spaces which is part of our day to day lives.

This contrasting atmosphere can help the users to take a break from their busy life.

The main concept is to have a complex structure which is very light at the same time. Simple lines are used to create a complex nature by creating an interesting pattern.

The pattern is designed in such a way that- from one point the view of the cables are organised and from another the cable seems very irregular.

The tables are suspended by cables. A similar

concept is used for the ceiling by using cables to

create an organic shape. Simple lines are used to

create a harmonious structure as a pattern for the ceiling.

DESIGN FACTORS

7

Since the cafe is situated near Manipal University , Students will be the primary users. Separate informal seating areas are provided for the students. These spaces are separated using partition walls.

According to the requirements the interior space is divided into the cafe and tattoo parlour. Waiting area is used as a buffer space between these functions. A

CEILING DESIGN

8

The ceiling is created by cables tied in a basic steel frame.

The base geometry of the ceiling is created by using a triangular prism - the 3 edges becomes the main supporting structure which is ďŹ xed to the wall. Threaded rods are used to connect these edges in an alternating pattern in one face of the prism. The cables are tied on the

threaded rod in a continuous manner which results in the harmonious shape.

Location : Kerala

Total Built up area : 545 sqm The site is located in kerala, Which has a warm and humid climate. So cross ventilation is one of the main factor which lead to this design. The site has a sloping terrain. The slope is towards the southwest direction. The form is derived by the terrain.

RAMP 1/12 RATIO

RAMP 1/12 RATIO

The sloping character of the site is used in the design to create various levels in the landscape.Since 1/3 rd of the house is covered in soil, the space inside the house will have a cooling effect. One of the main attraction of the house is the 5mX5m skylight which captures the Norther light, This light is used to illuminate all the common spaces.

The Balcony is placed in such a way to frame the beautiful view of the vegetable garden and pool.

The Northern light is captured through the 5mX5m skylight and is oriented towards all the common spaces.

A beautiful view of the sky is framed which is visible from the living space.

The vertical length of the opening in southern side spaces are reduced to block the harsh sunlight.

Cross ventilation is one of the main design factor. since kerala has a hot and humid climate. The openings are oriented to capture the wind from the south west direction.

The skylight is achieved by creating a separate hollow cuboid. which is rotated in 45degrees to capture the northern light.

The skylight is placed right above the entrance and only one OHT supporting wall is given.

FOR CAMPUS MAP

1st Year

Manipal is an international university.

Students and companies from all over the world comes to Manipal. Since Manipal

University has separate blocks for each course, Finding the right place is a bit

confusing. A map of the whole campus is

essential near the entrance of the building.

The structure is inspired by nature. Which resulted in the

FLOW OF WATER

organic form. One of the key element in this design is the

MAP

flow of water as seen in nature, This is achieved by using corrugated sheets cut into an ellipse.

LAYERS

Pune has a hot semi-arid climate. The Site is located on a less vegetated area. The site is situated next to a lake.

Due to the climatic factors there will be high heat load on the building.

SITE

To decrease the heat load a secondary skin system is designed.

The Layers are oriented in such a way to achieve a self shading mechanism on

the building. Wind direction is one of the design factor which lead to the orientation of the layers.Since the building has to function as an Art gallery

The building is oriented in such a way that the wind load exerted on the building is minimum and the view towards the lake is not compromised. Only diffused sunlight is used inside the building. The direct sunlight is blocked by the layers. Since direct sunlight increases heat load in the building. At the same time view from the building towards the landscape is not compromised.

The main concept of this campus is to have open spaces between each studios. These vegetated informal space provides the

students to have a peaceful interactive

spaces. These spaces act as a buffer space between each studios.

Since this is a Performing Art campus.

Music studios and Dance halls require a One of the design factor was the contour on site. Since the

site is located on a contoured terrain. The contours are used

buffer space to reduce the noise level produced by each studio.

INTERACTIVE ART INSTALLATION

The structure is inspired from nature. The geometry hexagon is commonly seen in

nature such as in honeycomb, snowakes etc

The shape hexagon can circumscribe the largest area for a given perimeter.

Hexagon is used as the basic unit in this design.

A series of hexagons of varying dimensions are used. Two parameters (radius of the hexagon and the extruded dimension of each unit) is

gradually varying. In overall the gradual change

in the dimensions creates a harmonious pattern. The hexagonal units on the bottom part are extruded to create seating space.

Similarly the other hexagonal units are used for various functions such as storage, lighting , poster display space and waste bin.
