SOFTWARE SKILLS

I am a 22-year-old Interior Architect and Designer, currently pursuing my postgraduate studies at Nottingham Trent University. Originally from India, I have completed my undergraduate studies in Singapore, in collaboration with Coventry University. Design is a major part of me. Personally, design is where I get to be myself- exploring, creating and learning. I see it as a method of communicating ideas and solutions into people‘s lives. Simple details fascinate me and I see them as a metaphor to life- where complicating things only brings clutter.

The kayak club acts as a social magnet, attracting people with similar interests like travel, sports and meeting new people. Although kayaking is mainly an outdoors activity, the project aims at creating inte actions between people. Some of the main functions of the uitzicht op de singel kayak club range from training, learning, watching and experiencing. The club houses a gym and experiential learning space where the users get to ‘dip their toes’ in the kayak pool before actually venturing into the historic canals of Amsterdam. The other spaces are mainly supporting spaces, like- changing rooms, shower areas, kayak storage spaces, et cetera.

ISSUE Known to be the largest democracy; the country rich in culture and heritage, historic architecture and diversity, India is one of the largest countries in South Asia. With over 1.3 billion people, India stand to be the second most populated country. Strikingly, a large portion of the country’s population comprises of children belonging to the deep ends of poverty. They have no financial support, food or education. Often found on the streets, calling the footpaths their mansions, these children spend their lives indulging in illegal activities like- production of fireworks, theft and robbery, consumption of alcohol and prostitution.

This horizontal circulation is the central focus point of the academy. Like the nerve system of the human body, it connects the various zones to the heart of the academy, being the educational division. Every oor has a minimum of two horizontally connective bridges that facilitate the transportation of people.

The fundamentals kitchen is a key space in the academy. To improve and increase the learning activity, the kitchen is divided into three zones. The rst is a brieeng zone, where the students will be briefed about the activities for the day. This space can also double-up as a meeting / tasting counter. The second zone is the cooking and performing zone, where the faculty performs the skills and guides the students. And the third zone is an observation area where other students can be accommodated so that they can learn through stude observation.

The space will include common storage cabinets, allowing all students to store their personal belongings. Additional ‘safe’ cabinets will be located within each pod, for the storage valuables. The accommodation wing is separated into male and female. Communal lounges are provided at regular intervals. Special pods are created for barrier free users, with the possibility for two students to share a pod. All pods are stacked on top of each other, to accommodate more students and for effective usage of space. The distinguishing factors include the usage of local materials.
