Re-Genesis, a vertical hybrid structure, aims to regenerate the environment while emphasizing on the importance of culture through the form articulation and programmatic distribution of the resilient hybrid. This Eco - Cultural Hub contains programmes within the building which focus on increasing social interaction and promote the ecological concept of clean air and wind circulation.

SITE | CONTEXT

LOCATION: Block F, DLF Phase 1, Golf Course Road, Gurugram SITE AREA: 120900 sq.m

SWOT ANALYSIS STRENGHT • Site is located around a junction which allows multiple access points to the site. • Close to the Rapid Metro station and is situated on Golf Course Road. WEAKNESS • Lacks drainage and a sewage netwrok leading to flooding. • Predominent built use and lack of open green spaces. • Lack of cultural and ecologoical thought. OPPORTUNITY • Upcoming newer building typologies such as community and learning centres. More residential complexes are being built. THREAT • The Air quality of Gurugram is always high and is considered to be a major health risk to the citizens of the city. The increase in population has resulted in an increase in the use of vehicles leading to increasing noise pollution. 8

The site is located at a busy junction, with traffic driving towards both the directions. The accessibility is through the road and through the Rapid metro, that is passing right from the cenre of the site. ReGenisis is a hyrbid skyscraper 25 floors high containing residential, commercial and recreational functions. It connects the retail programmes with the hotel as well as the Eco-Cultural Hub. This Eco-Cultural Hub is the X-Factor which aims to merge the culture of the locale with nature. The Hub an initiative to retain the ecological aspect of the city while emphasizing the culture of India. ACTIVITY MAPPING

FORM DEVELOPMENT The first step was to split the area into two blocks to activate the intersection - using two adjacent quadrants. Next the blocks were spilt into floor plates and the hotel residential functions were separated. The floorplates were curved and staggered based on the sun and wind movement. Finally the external smog eating and solar panel facade treatement was adopted along the Eastern and Southern sides.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

Proposing this built form at the junction of two major roads allows a greater footfall and allows for connections within the buildings in the horizontal as well as the vertical plane. The objective of this Hub is to allow artists to travel from various parts of the country and showcase their art while teaching the same to the residents near-by. The cultural aspect is enabled by studios, a regional theatre as well as a gallery space provided at different levels of this hyrbid. The ecological aspect works around the principle of creating botanical gardens which can be used as refuge terraces. The facade treatment aims to purify air through the smog eating titanium panels while using translucent solar panels to accumulate renewable energy. ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO | 2018-2023

EcoTal is a modern ecological urban design proposal for Bajghera, an urban village, located in Gurugram, India. The vision of this proposal is to create an eco-friendly smart livable district which utilizes digital tools to promote a sustainable lifestyle. This proposal was designed for a site of 120 acres. The aim of the project was to achiece a low-emission zone with restricted motor vehicles while addressing the economical, social and nature-based aspects of sustainable development. LAND USE

The site is presently barren with the edge along the Expressway being scantily covered by trees.

SUN PATH

The North-South axis is along the Dwarka Expressway. In East, a solar power plant is proposed which is used as the renewable energy source for the entire site.

PROGRAMMATIC DISTRIBUTION ENTRY / EXIT FROM DWARKA EXPRESSWAY A Transit Hub is provided on the site edge, near the up-coming metro station, which would house the various modes of E-vehicular transport as well as bicycle stands

Offices cater to aid the AI monitored surveillance as well as for those companies that promote their product at the exhibition pavillions.

The VR museum promotes the concept of digitalization and acts as the main attraction point, brining in more people to the site.

The commercial typology consists of 3 malls and smaller shops and market spaces.

This plant converts the plastic collected on site into electricity, used for powering the 120 acres.

EXIT FROM SITE

This residential typology consists of group housing desinged for the expected population on site.

An institutional zone is provided, a college which focuses on research and experimentation with regard to building a smart green world.

These pavilions are made up of a modular unit which are stagged and arranged according to the user requirement. The pavilions are our design strategy to increase awareness among the people regarding digital and sustainable means of living .

The Maquette is a Gallery and Musuem designed to display Gurugram’s culture and history to its visitors while using the architectural technique called ‘Grafting’ - fusing the new design with the existing built mass. This design is spilt into two structures on opposite ends of the existing Food Court. Each structure consists of two floors with an adjoining market space. The ground floor contains the musuem, connected to the market with the reception and core. The first floor consists of a gallery space, a café and a terrace garden. The two structures are connected via the top floor of the Food Court.

SITE | CONTEXT

VISION

The vision was to Graft Culture into Gurugram

The aim was to create an interactive space which, using holographic technology, would demonstrate the evolution of Culture in Gurugram over the years. This was achieved by creating two levels of Gallery spaces, optimizing the level of privacy each space would require. The Holographic Gallery occupied the ground floor to activate the ground plane - public zone. The Art Gallery on the first floor adjoining the Cafe acts as the more exclusive space - private zone. The two blocks are connected via the existing structure by a rooftop garden - public zone.

PROTOTYPE LIGHT OUTLETS

Formed by a Hexagonal grid, these light outlets, in the shape of a Hemispherical dome, allow light for the inside space like a Pattern. Inspired by the concept of kinetic architecture, these light outlets have light sensors fitted on the top that trace the path of light and rotate respectively so that maximum light is allowed inside.

Maquette uses a network of RCC beams and columns with the walls being made out of brick masonry. It also consists of curved roofs that incorporate the terrace gardens. A hexagonal grid has been morphed over the curved roofs so as to create a grid on top giving specific spots that are used for light outlets and seating above. The trellis being one of the most significant part of the design is supported well with the use of large concrete columns covered with a designed wooden surface. These columns provide support to the whole trellis while also contributing to the aesthetics of the open place.

The brief of this competition encouraged designers to design a work studio which can break the conventional model for small office space, and create a space that fosters innovation, collaboration and productivity. The competition aslo proposes the studio to be envisioned in a distinctive material character and texture - using shipping containers as the key building material.

BOMBAY TO MUMBAI : TRANSCENDING AR

ARGUMENT: The argument put forward by this dissertation is that the integration of architectural traditions with the built, which was prevalent pre-Inde changed in perception post-Independence. This dissertation further argues that the reason for this decline is the pursuit of ‘Contemporar regard to cultural identity of the nation.

AIM: This dissertation seeks to establish that during transition of India from a British colony to an independent country, the integration of Indian with the built has systematically been reduced such that 21st Century Mumbai has strayed from its Indian roots.

SCOPE OF STUDY: Multiple architectural styles have impacted and hence, shaped the current architectural style of the country. This dissertation is limited buildings, namely landmarks of Mumbai, such that the impact of the transcending ideologies can be studied as a whole, substantiating the

PARAMETERS OF STUDY: • Selection of Site: Land availability and hence scale • Local Materials: Utilizing local materials to boost local economy • Public realm: Use of the structure by the people • Aesthetics of building: Superstructure reflecting historical patterns and symbols • Identity: Importance of the structure during the period it was built in INFERENCES Based on the research collected it is inferred that: • A decline in the incorporation of traditional values can be seen towards the end of Modernism period, just before India gained independence from British rule. • The period of Critical Regionalism provided relief from the lack of structural identity. • Due to Globalization and the surge of migrant population, this identity was again lost. CONCLUSION While it is necessary to cater to the needs of the modern-day society, the heritage of the city cannot be lost. There is an urgent need, perhaps, to look at Mumbai in the larger regional – or even national – context. It is the culture of the people that imparts the sense of individuality and uniqueness to the city.

WHY THE CITY OF BOMBAY: • This dissertation focuses on Mumbai due to its rich and diverse architectural history. • An eclectic blend of Gothic, Victorian, Art Deco and Indo - Saracenic forms this city’s architecture. It is an enthusiast’s delight. • Mumbai has established its character as a city of many cultural expressions. • While colonial rule dominated the urban growth, Bombay came to represent individuality despite the circumstances. • In the cultural sphere, the city came to symbolize the paradigm analogous to the achievements of the colonial and post-colonial India.
