MIXED USE HIGH RISE M U M B A I, M A H A R A S H T R A
BRIEF
SITE PLAN
FORM DEVELOPMENT
To create a high rise within the WTC complex in Mumbai. The towers are to cater to a range of functions including commercial and residential. 3 towers of differing heights as a response to the varying heights of buildings in the immediate context of the site.
KEY POINTS
Location within the Word Trade Centre complex To reduce the height of the retail tower, retail is restricted to the lower 5 floors and takes a horizontal form. The office tower is placed adjacent to the WTC towers.
Views from the building
Passive strategies
Segregation of functions
The site is located beside the sea which gives an excellent opportunity to provide the users with views to the sea. The positions of the office and residential towers were switched to ensure shading of the residential towers by the taller office towers.
PLANS AND SECTIONS
The form of the building is decided on the basis of the functions. To aid the segregation of the functions, the building comprises of three basic parts – one horizontal and two vertical rectangles housing the retail, offices and residence parts of the building respectively.
RETAIL PLANS
To aid the shading of the building using the form, the office tower takes on a staggered form. In addition to self shading, vertical louvers are provided on the Southwest façade and egg crate shading devices are provided on the Northeast façade.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN On the site, vehicular circulation is provided along the site edges to segregate circulation from the functions of the building. Further in the building, for ease and simplicity of functioning, the different kinds of functions in the building are segregated by means of form – the retail section occupies the bottom 5 floors of the building and the offices and residences rise as two separate towers from the 6th floor onwards. OFFICE AND RESIDENCE PLANS
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF WATER SPORTS C A R A N Z A L E M, G O A
BRIEF
SITE PLAN
To design an institute of water sports on Dona Paula Beach in Goa. The institute will serve as an academic platform for students interested in the field of water sports. Simultaneously, the building will also house public amenities in the form of a library, a cafĂŠ, a museum and an auditorium. The design brief also requires residential facilities for the students.
KEY POINTS Views from the building

Built-open relationship
Both the buildings on the site are designed and placed such that they get the best views and can make the best of its location beside the sea. The sea acts as the focal point for the orientation of both the buildings.

The academic part of the building includes classrooms, workshops and training rooms for the students, in addition to rooms for the faculty.
Both the institution and hostel buildings are designed around large open spaces in the form of courtyards and water bodies to instill in the users a sense of being in the open as opposed to the building overwhelming the openness of the site and its context.

PLANS AND SECTIONS
To create a residence for a family of five comprising of a couple, their son and his grandmother. The site is located in Mehrauli and offers excellent views of the Qutub Minar.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
KEY POINTS
Views from the building
Built-open relationship
The house is located at a distance from the front edge to provide a sense of isolation and ensure minimal noise from the traffic on the road fronting the edge of the site. A number of water bodies are provided on the site which act as interactive focal points and also contribute to passive cooling of the building.

INFORMATION CENTRE A H M E D A B A D, G U J A R A T
BRIEF
SITE PLAN
To create an information center for the Mill Owner’s Association building in Ahmedabad designed by Le Corbusier. In addition, a retail section is also to be provided within the information centre.
KEY POINTS
Views from the building
The concept of this design aims to challenge the very concept of boundaries and threshold by questioning the need of a boundary wall and replacing the front edge of the site with the information centre which will aim to increase visitor’s’ knowledge about the building before they physically reach it, all the while maintaining visual contact with the building itself.
Axis
PLANS AND SECTIONS Interactive spaces
Threshold
The form and aesthete of the information centre was deliberately kept as minimal as possible to allow all the attention to remain on the building. The materials and form of the building were decided such as to complement those of the existing structure.

TOPIC
Design and the designer’s culture
RESEARCH QUESTION
How does a designer’s cultural upbringing reflect in his design process?
The profession of architecture and, broadly, the field of design is one which is highly interrelated with and draws greatly from the fields of sociology and psychology. Keeping other factors aside, what is notable is the effect that the psychology of a designer has on his design process and further along that road, on his final design output. While a number of factors influence and impact a designer’s psychology, the one under study in the dissertation is the influence of a designer’s cultural background and upbringing on his design process. Any individual, during his lifetime, is exposed to a variety of cultures, some his own, and some that he picked up along the way from others around him. It may be safe to say, then, that his outlook and all his actions are a result of the unique amalgamation of these factors. The aim of the study is to investigate the extent of influence that a designer’s cultural background and upbringing has on his thought process. In addition, the interplay of a number of diverse cultural backgrounds and the unique addition that this phenomenon will bring to a designer’s work are also studied. An understanding of the impact of the phenomenon of culture on a designer’s background will not only help realize the reasons behind some of his important design decisions but also enable one to critically analyze his work in a new light, hence perhaps even forming a new opinion on his work and the cultural background he belongs to.
SETTLEMENT STUDY
BRIEF
To study the residents of village Bishnoi in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and learn about vernacular architecture and its usage and relevance in a rapidly changing world which is increasingly dependent on technology to meet everyday needs.
SITE PLAN
ARCHITECTURE
All houses are built around a central courtyard to ensure ventilation of the houses.
Windows had hand painted triangular motifs around them to highlight openings. The paint is made using locally available materials.
Spread across the entire Northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent, the Bishnois are a group of people who, to this day, maintain a strong sense of connect with the environment around them, taking care of it like their own. This characteristic clearly reflects in their built environment with houses of the Bishnoi community showing a strong sense of interrelation with the natural environment around them.
Boundary walls are built either out of the thorny bushes of the Ber plant or by randomly stacking stones as a means of protection from wild animals which frequent the area.
