what if
we build above the ground? The site of Scalo di Porta Romana is an empty plot of land with a railway track traversing through it. The neighborhood has many activities and despite having immense potential to develop, it was observed that the services in the vicinity although present, were not equally distributed throughout the neighborhood. The site was divided in multipurpose activities supporting the Winter Olympics Village 2026 considering Clarence Perry’s optimal walking distance of 200 meters as specified in his New York regional plan. What if cities were not built on ground but instead above the ground? Inspired by the story of Octavia by Italo Calvino, what if the citizens did not build on the Earth’s surface because “they hate the earth; respect it so much they introduction
avoid all contact; they love it as it was before they existed”. Therefore, the project was developed keeping in hindsight the hypothesis of avoiding contact with the Earth in order to conserve the land. The existing city grows and flows on to proposed park following the extension of the already existing roads and pathways to keep a continuity of the existing city where the Floating City retains its individual character. What if the floating city did not have flat circulation loops like roads, streets etc but instead functioned on circulations not only lateral but also vertical and diagonal, suspended in the air with piazzas and public spaces dotted across the vertical layers of the floating city.
