RESIDENTIAL - Residential building in San Sebastián de los Reyes - Residential tower “Light house” in El Cañaveral (Madrid) - Residential refurbishment in Madrid

This project consists of the resolution of a void between two common walls in the historical centre of San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain. The conditions of the site, urban parametres and neighbours’ rights configure the shape and form of the desgn of this building. It tries to adapt to the existing pre-existences providing a renewed character.

>residential building in s.sebastián CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL Architect : Javier Vázquez Team : Ana Sabugo, José de Andrés, DAVID FERNANDEZ, David Freijeiro Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 5

It is a two storey building with two dwellings in each floor. The entrance to the building is an unique courtyard with a common area for neighbours to socialize. The implantation of a sitting area and a green wall makes this fantastic meeting point a distinctive feature. The new building therefore fits perfectly in its surroundings at the same time it give us an image that results, in its outside and inside, contemporary.

The future new city of ‘El Cañaveral’ is located in the south east outskirts of Madrid. It is planned to be the greatest urban development that will be finally constructed after the property bubble burst.

>residential building in EL CAÑAVERAL CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL

The proposal emphasise the contemporary character of the building in opposition to the anonimous brick facades of the surrounding buildings. Moreover, the plastic skin of the tower, composed by thin panels of polycarbonate, allows the building to protect the interior from the cold castillian winter and the summer sun.

Architect : Javier Vázquez Team : PABLO QUINTANAL, Ana Sabugo, José de Andrés, Luis Miguel Sánchez Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 4

The distribution of the dwelling have been carefully studied in order to minimize the dysfunctional spaces, such as corridors. Every dwelling has its living room in the corner of the tower, so they all have cross ventilation, sunlight and views to the Spanish vast plateau.

It is necessary to locate the whereabouts on the outskirts appearing in some movies in the eighties to find the block selected for my Final Project Degree, It turns out this block, which emerged in the fifties thanks to the famous Spanish promotor José Banús, became such a cinematographic icon, despite having been a total disaster for having expected to be similar to its “Modernists cousins”.

>residential RESTORATION MArch FINAL thesis CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL Architect : ANA SABUGO SIERRA Co-DIRECTORS: Rafael beneytez / victor m. cano Year: 2015 Stages: academic architectural design

With its 21 vestibules, what seems a huge mass of concrete are actually 21 “towers in-between dividing walls”, following an H block structure. After a wide research about European models of blocks with common spaces, it results so ironic that the most similar block to this is Casa de las Flores, but with a percentage of dwellings much smaller. That is why this is a perfect case study building: a block on the outskirts that it is no longer there because of the growth of the city, that pretends to be Modernist but succumbs to Banús’ speculation. And although it hosts a great village indoors, it doesn’t actually have enough common spaces and its little courtyards are inlivable. The result is the construction of an artefact that increases and humanizes this block, and not only does it aim its new functions to socialize, but also the creation of an atmosphere in which the structure and tecnic support the creation of its own environment.

MIXED USE AND CULTURAL - Metro Headquartes and museum (Madrid) - Coam lounge (Madrid) - Pop culture centre in Battersea Power Station

>METRO HEADQUARTERS AND MUSEUM CATEGORY: CULTURAL / MIxed use Architect : ANA SABUGO SIERRA, josé m. de andrés and victor cano Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION) (site visits, first sketches, conceptual models, etc.) The famous Metro of Madrid has called for proposals to build its headquarters in the famous Castilla Square, near the Kio Towers and the Four Towers of the city. The aim of this project is to create a spece in which both visitors and workers in this institution are able to enjoy the space. The building surrounds a square which distributes the modules and gives it a character. It is composed by a frame which recalls the rails where a building lays on. The building is also a moduled series of independent structures that are stacked to form the offices and the exhibition rooms.

The aim of this project is to create a spece in which both visitors and workers in this institution are able to enjoy the space, currently without any functions but distributing paths. The main feature of the proposal is that we characterise the spaces and the atmospheres by hanging pieces of textile elements with different opacities. Thus the space begins to be distorted until the shadows and colors begin to be a part of those people’s lives.

>COAM LOUNGE CATEGORY: CULTURAL / MIxed use FINALISTS IN COAM Architect : ANA SABUGO SIERRA, josé m. de andrés and victor cano Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION)

This gradient of transparences allows partially the view of the whole panorama while people can also have privacy. A clear reference was Aldo van Eyck’s pavilion for sculptures, in which the spaces area featured when an sculpture appears. In the same way, all the furniture incorporated to this room are the main elements to divide the areas.

Almost 30 years after its operational closure, the mythical Battersea Power Station languishes in a wasteland by the river Thames in what could perfectly be an image from a post industrial apocalypse movie. Only three years later, lots of luxurious apartments, pools, tennis courts, etc have been designed, almost burying the spectacular view of the icon.

>POP CULTURE CENTRE - BATTERSEA CATEGORY: CULTURE / MIXED USE FIRST CLASS HONORS

The project consists of a big longitudinal building inside the Station, located on the great central courtyard. Its new strong structure, composed by distinctive beams that envolve the spaces, helps the project be like a new city inside. The changing situations inside these public (library, auditorium, exhibition hall...) and private (workshops, offices...) spaces were conceived as a new situationist city, very similar to Constant’s changing New Babylon.

Architect : ANA SABUGO SIERRA CO-directors: José g. Gallegos / Marcos parga Year: 2014 Stages: ACADEMIC ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

We pretend to be respectful taking into account that we shouldn’t change the image of this historical building. This project has been thought to critizise the way of doing speculative architecture nowadays.

URBAN AND LANDSCAPE - Sestao square (Basque country) - Europan 13 Finland - Piensa Sol (Madrid)

The project searches for an structural solution to protect Sestao’s San Pedro square from rain and sun radiation. The aim of the proposal is to create a common space of interchange between daily users (families, dog walkers, children, etc.) and sporadic public events.

>SESTAO SAN PEDRO SQUARE CATEGORY: URBAN / LANDSCAPE FINALISTS IN SESTAO CITY HALL

The structure creates a triangulated grid that supports a plastic membrane of EFTE. This thin layer protects like an umbrella people below while allows light to break through it. On the other hand, the structure contain a lighting system that create a meeting point for the city and prevent criminal attitudes.

ArchitectS: ANA SABUGO, JOSé DE ANDRÉS AND VICTOR CANO Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION)

In conclusion, we want to transform an anonymous space into an iconic point that not only improve life conditions of the inhabitants but also put the city on the map.

(site visits, first sketches, conceptual models, etc.)

Our proposal revisits modern urbanism through this precise handicap. The housing units rise as isolated pure masses; yet, they are grouped into strategic clusters, connected by open-air platforms that provide a symbolic and physical place for casual and planned gathering, insert traditional urban values into the modern equation and call for a further reframing of today’s collectivity.

>EUROPAN 13 OTANIEMI CATEGORY: URBAN / LANDSCAPE SPECIAL MENTION GIVEN BY EUROPAN EUROPE ArchitectS: ANA SABUGO, JOSé DE ANDRÉS, JAVIER DE ESTEBAN, GUIOMAR MARTIN, MYRIAM MARTIN, JIMENA ALONSO Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION)

Like a clever dice game, these pieces move away from the shore to fit into forest clearings, building up an intermittent brick and wooden backdrop that emerge subtly behind reeds and trees, arousing the curiosity of Laajalahti hikers.

(first sketches, conceptual models, etc.)

24

The new proposal meets opportunity in permanent change with activities and social life. The void generated by the surroundings is deeply marked in order to adapt the square to a continuous, and variable necessities of this pubic space.

>PIENSA SOL - MADRID CATEGORY: URBAN / LANDSCAPE THIRD PRIZE GIVEN BY MADRID CITY HALL

The aim of the proposal is the creation of a multicultural axis that connects the most important monuments throughout the centre of Madrid. Such as Prado museum, Thyssen, the Parliament, the new Sol centre, The Royal Theatre, the Royal Palace and the new museum for Spanish Heritage.

ArchitectS: ANA SABUGO, JOSé DE ANDRÉS, JAVIER DE ESTEBAN, JOSé MANUEL CALVO DEL OLMO Year: 2014 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION)

Not only is this proposal focused on the only square, but it also treats the urban space as an area to improve.

EXHIBITIONS AND RESEARCHES - Venice Architecture Biennale. Archinauts the Cosmoroute - Oslo Architecture Triennale. Modulor’s bastard children

During the last period of economic growth in Spain, construction became the main driving force of the economy. Today, reality reveals us the built presence and the unfinished remains of what once was the largest edificatory enterprise in Spanish history, leaving behind a difficult situation in which to deal with partially constructed large volumes which are not consolidated.

>ARCHINAUTS OF THE COSMOROUTE CATEGORY: RESEaRCHES / EXHIBITION GOLDEN LION AT VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE FOR THE SPANISH PAVILION.

Under the title “Unfinished”, the exhibition in the Spanish Pavilion for the Venice Biennale 2016 draws attention to these unfinished architectures in order to discover virtues that can become design strategies. “Unfinished” wants to be a reflection on the architectures born out of the resignation to respond to certain aspects. In order to do so, the exhibition will promote creative speculation about how to subvert the past condition into a positive contemporary action.

ArchitectS: ANA SABUGO, JOSé DE ANDRÉS, VICTOR CANO, JOSÉ CULLEN, ALEJANDRO BURGUEÑO AND ROCÍO ROMERO. Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION) (first sketches, conceptual models, etc.)

The aim of the Archinauts of the Cosmoroute solution, is to make the main agents of our profession aware of the mistakes made in the past and “educate”.

Tensta is a Stockholm district suffering the “Million Dwelling Program” consequences; a literal translation of Modern Movement urbanism influenced by Modulor´s pattern and International Style way of life and design. As Tensta shows, it failed creating isolated ghettos instead of relational cities. Against this situation, “Modulor´s bastard children” aims to create a “suburbs aesthetic” –out of the centre and power- where all bodies, affects and identities could be understood. As our proposal is sensible to microhistories, the main study case is Adams Tensta -a black famous rapper awarded with 2008 Grammy- way of life in a Tensta house designed for a “typical” four members Sweden family. How has the space changed by its affects through decoration?

>MODULOR’S BASTARD CHILDREN CATEGORY: RESEaRCHES / EXHIBITION HONORABLE MENTION IN OSLO ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE. ArchitectS: ANA SABUGO, JOSé DE ANDRÉS, VICTOR CANO, JOSÉ CULLEN AND ROCÍO ROMERO. Year: 2016 Stages: 0 to 2 (ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION)

As the philosopher Paul Valery says: “The deepest is the skin” and these houses are decorated mainly by affective objects and skins, so we are going to put in value these skins -far away from purism and its white walls- to show the broad range of them are used along the day (carpets, clothes, graffiti, curtains…) to reinforce their identity in a context which was not designed for them. Bastard Children do not need patterns because there are guided by its affects and sensations.
