A cloud perceived as a dome. A dome perceived as a cloud. A sensorial exploration of space and material. A structure made from one material. A dome made from many.
Nephos is a collective project. It is an installation trying to figure out the notion of the clouds (‘‘nephos’’). For its fabrication 40.000 tie-wraps were used, creating layers of ornamental patterns, whose ovelappings give an impressive dome atmosphere. The physical item is a flexible structure, evolving in space, stimulating the exploration of it. The size of the installation is approximately 3.0x3.0x3.0m and it is hanging from the top, providing a semi-enclosed space underneath it. A cloud perceived as a dome. A dome perceived as a cloud. A sensorial exploration of space and material. A structure made from one material. A dome made from many.

This thesis is based on the concept of prison and continues in spatial exploration of the concepts of encroaching and isolation. The narrative consists of four chapters. The first three are regarding some theoretical references which then form the forth chapter of the synthesis. The first chapter is a reference to the ‘‘Lost Island’’ of Karagatsis where it acts as an allegory concerning the blurry boundaries of morality and the fine line between freedom and isolation. Subsequently, the second chapter deals with Michel Foucault’s work, and with the conveyance of the King’s inverted body as an ideal metaphor to the two-way relationship between power and punishment, society and imprisonment. In the third chapter we find the spatial symbol of the maze, where it stands as both a metaphor towards free society and the illusion of the choice in it, as well as symbolically, as based on the mythology (Ariadne and Theseus) it expresses the concept of inner search and rebirth. In the forth chapter the theoretical research mentioned above is getting combined in order to be transformed to a spatial intervention. Observing the city from above and thinking of the prisons as enclosed islets in the city, or else -lost islands in the city- we connect symbolically the concept of the prison with the uncovered blocks of flats, as spaces that arise as the structure of society is built around them both literally and metaphorically. In that sense, we choose a building block in the city and we work on it initially by inverting it, returning back to Foucault’s inverted body, and then we continue by creating a new labyrinth through various manipulations, inputs and parameters that we are now defining as creators of the arising form. Then, through a dynamic, digital tool, we create the final form that is no longer in our control, as the randomness of this tool creates a foreign place for us as well. So, starting as creators, we now become visitors and we then try to discover the labyrinth that has been created. The new model penetrates, then, the solid volume of the building block, creating a new body leaving its negative trace to the existing volume and its positive form is visible only at the uncovered space. In this new place, three ascension routes are added,
allowing you to navigate through the labyrinth to discover it, acting at the same time, as the labyrinth’s threads. In this way we create our own invisible island, using the term island in order to express the detachment from the city and the search of another place. It is hidden but also accessible. It is a different landscape, a new escape in relation to the city, but it has been created through it. In this place, the beginning and the end are not as important as the process and the pause are. There is no use but only the mere contact with new spaces, the transition from one to the other and the feeling that each space spontaneously causes every individuality different feeling. The importance of the relationship between opposing or different things, the need of the void and the solid one, is tried to be highlighted. The importance of coexistence instead of absolute separation. Invisible not visually but in terms of the existence of boundaries. Existing limits but not forbidding. A place of isolation but not a place of confinement. Isolation as a personal choice that does not exclude the human encounter or contact. An attempt to discover the personal limits of each one as far as our relationship with freedom is concerned. We propose an exploration of freedom through space and place but it is not a solution or a suggestion, just a single version, a proposal for further research or even the continuation of this theoretical and spatial narrative.

L A N D S C A P E = T O P I O < T O P O S The greek word for landscape is ‘topio’ which derives from the word ‘topos’. Topos describes a place in which there is active human presence. PLACE
place non place
land & sea
place PLACE
place PLACE
If human presence and interaction lacks from it, this is no longer a ‘topos’, but just a place (or what we call a non place). With the preposition ‘a’ we can make up the word ‘a-topos’ which stands for a place with no elements of human presence.
But ‘atopos’ also stands for something that has no logic, not sequence. It means that something has not essential substance. ‘Atopos’ describes perfectly the sea as a non place, a dead landscape that cannot be named a landscape, because it has no interaction with the human nature. That is one fundamental problem which occurred from our analysis and on which we intend to focus in order to build up a new system, a new perception of landscaping about the sea. Until now the sea acts like a void, with no use nor interaction with the shore and this is something we intend to change. Persuing freedom in a world where space design intents to define all motions and moves. By the seaside, on an abandoned piece of land, where an unexpected kind of beauty is found -the beauty of the non defined- there is a place with the sense of freedom, sense that totally lacks from the cities today. The design has not come to an end. On the contrary, this is just the beginning. This is an open structure that turns the eye towards the sea, by adding more fields of interest on the water, in order to form a network of uses and moves upon it. A future vision for new ways to live by the sea (or on it). 22

In the central atrium there are the main staircases of the building, stimulating people to use them and thus enhancing the meetings and social interaction. Each staircase lands to a common triangular area that hosts the entrances to the common meeting rooms. The shape of the staircases allows visual connection and the positioning of the fix furniture determines the possible routes that people can take leading to two types, either the fast or the slow one, depending on the common activity that is needed to be developped on the specific triangle (fast route in a more focused common area, and a slow route in a more social one).
