DORMITORY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
BARLAD, ROMANIA DIPLOMA PROJECT 2017

Temporary living is characteristic for young people, that are still in the process of defining themselves as individuals and of finding the place of their own. Young people category can be divided into three smaller categories. Firstly, there are high school students, university students and the young adults. When talking about temporary living, the first category, high school students, is not very large, because most of the individuals still live with their parents. There are also a part of them that are forced to move to a different location in order to have access to decent education. In Romania, when designing the dormitories for this category, it was not taken into consideration the fact that they are adolescents, so there was no difference between students dormitories or high school students dormitories. Some of these teenagers choose Barlad’s high schools because the education is better than in their hometown institutions, but most of these teenagers don’t even have the option of going to high school in their hometown, so if they want to continue their education, they do have to change location. Vaslui region has 81 villages and 450 small villages, but only 5 of them offer high schools. In the whole Vaslui region there are 18 high schools, and 5 of them are located in Barlad.

site location
The site is located in the eastern part of Romania, in Barlad. The site is part of the Complex neighborhood, located on a hill side of the town, well connected with the city center by bus lines. The area studied is currently under a continuous transformation, that started when the building across the street was built to function as a military school. After a couple of years, it was transformed into a regular high school and it functions like that ever since. The neighborhood has been part of the town since 1990. Both this area and the north-east part of the town developed rapidly in the last 30 years due to the increased need of housing. In the present, Barlad is the second town in the country regarding the urban density (people per kilometer). The urban plan of the area has been elaborated between 1987 and 1990, but the exact location of the site is not part of the actual regulation. The area is mostly occupied and surrounded by dwellings, both individual and collective. There is also a social center for underprivileged minors, not too far away. These neighborhoods sustain the positioning of such an architectural program exactly on this location. Moreover, one of the best high school in the city is located across the street. 2012 2017

LIVING THE BANK SIDES OF TIBER
ROME, ITALY CITY AND LANDSCAPE ATELIER 2016
29
The theme proposes four topics that should be taken into consideration: the high bank sides of the Tiber, the fast infrastructure developed on top of the ancient roads, a future scenario, the declining industry and the archaeological sites along the old Flaminia road. The project “Vivere le forre, aims to activate and to give a sense of organization to the area of Prima Porta, Rome, by finding practical solutions that to several problems at a time. The main problem is represented by the level of the rising water that on the one hand it is causing floods, by overflowing the river of Tiber and its tributary canals and on the other hand, by collecting the storm water into the residential areas between the bank sides and the hills. Other notable issues are the lack of services and of public spaces and the poor system of slow infrastructure. 30

The idea of the project is to transform the spaces that are affected by the floods into a system of public spaces that would prevent the rising level of the water. We identified the points of interest( historic buildings, the train station, the school) and also proposed new potential ones(a square and a market, a library, sport fields) in order to offer public spaces for the citizens and places where the needed services could be provided. For this to became a system, we needed to provide a connection, that will represent the first phase of our scenario. We proposed a bike path, that goes from the point where the existing path ends, until the north part of Prima Porta, where the Flaminio Cemetery can be found. This path will use the bank sides, which until this moment used to be both a problem, for creating “inside floods, and a solution, for stopping the overflowing of Tiber, to create a protected moving mean for pedestrians and bike riders. The second phase focuses on solving the water problem, by onverting certain areas around each point of interest into detention basins. After this problem will be solved, the third phase of the scenario can start, the construction phase. We intend to relocate and rebuild the train station of the area, as a bridge construction. Close to the trains station of Prima Porta, we will revitalize the space by creating a new public square, called Saxa Rubra and a building for public services. Our second built intervention takes place in an area close to the school, and it is meant to give space for the cultural program of Prima Porta. We propose a library and an open theater located at the point where the two water canals met. Our buildings will be integrated into the landscape by becoming part of the bank sides. The last part of the scenario, scheduled to end in 2050, is represented by the vegetation which is expected to be fully grown by then. This last part will make possible a complete understanding of our intentions

OFFICE BUILDING BUCHAREST, ROMANIA ARCHITECTURAL INSERTION IN THE HISTORICAL SITE 2015
39
The site is located very close to an old road of Bucharest, Calea Victoriei, and it is part of a protected area. Even though it is close to the center of the city, in a dense constructed area, the lot is currently used as a parking space. The area has real problems due to, on the one hand, the continuous pressure of the construction development, and on the other hand, the need to preserve the valuable architectural and environmental elements that are characteristic for the area. The protected area to which the lot belongs is very complex and fragile, from the architectural and urbanistic point of view, because it is still saving memories of the artistic life of Bucharest of the inter war period.

Dense constructions and passages are specific to the center of Bucharest. The project proposes a reinterpretation of these characteristics at the site level, which will be treated as a step of the way, a crossing to Ion Otetelesanu street. This idea will generate the built volume that rises from the ground in a simple form that results from the marking of the main direction of the site, and which sticks to the neighboring building through a small volume of a lower height. An office building is the functional solution for the given site, which will integrate greenhouses at different levels to provide a break from the bustle of the office and the city. In addition, the double facade and multi-opening window system options represent elements that contributes to the creation of a positive interior atmosphere.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL
BUCHAREST, ROMANIA ARCHITECTURAL INSERTION IN THE HISTORICAL SITE 2015
49
50
The project theme proposes to study the ways of intervention in hystoric and protectic sites and the correlation of the new projected interventions with existing constructions in terms of expression, volumetric impact or new uses. The proposed area is in the center of Bucharest, behind a high-rise curtain wall that corresponds to the perimeter defined as protected areas.

In order to activate this urban island, new functions, other than those already existing (housing, administration, local commerce and churches) will be introduced. The master plan proposes to convert the former factory into a space devoted to fashion, some landscaping planning, memorial sites (the former Rahovei Way, the former Parish House) and hotels. During the analysis, some issues were noticed, such as the buildings in the southern part of the studied area that does not allow a minimum sunshine period of time because of the high height differences between the edifices and due to not respecting the minimum distance between them. For the chosen site, I proposed a boutique hotel that aims to solve some of the lack of services problem of the center and at the same time offering the possibility to recreate the old interior atmosphere of Bucharest. The presence of the buildings nearby dictates the first idea of a volume, that it is going to be shaped by the relation with the two streets and the need of light in the back of the lot. In this way, a building with an inside courtyard is being created. The main access into the building is made from the courtyard. The ventilated facade shows at the exterior side a perforated sheet into the space of the old map of Bucharest.

SOCIO-CULTURAL HUB
BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2015
57
58
The site is located in the centre of Bucharest, close to Calea Victorei street. It is part of an old and fragmentet area of constructions, where functions of the buildings tend to vary. Due to its position and to the historic value of the area, the theme asks for a socio-cultural hub that would connect both the community and the tourists.

REEDUCATION CENTRE FOR JUVENILES
BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2014
65
66
The theme of the project asks for a reeducation center for juveniles, that aims to reintegrate them into the community. Along with the educational program, the assembly has to be one of the main elements of the process. The architectural proposal has to have a theoretical, a spatial and a functional part, adequate to the particularities of the age range. The purpose of this relation is to influence in a positive way the physical and psychical development of the children. Another issue that has to be taken care of is the relation of the minors with their families, as visitors, and with the community. The multicriterial analysis shows that the site is located in an area of Bucharest where dwellings prevail, but lacks services such as hospitals, schools, churches or commercial centers. In fact, the collective dwellings located on the north west part met the individual dwellings from the south east. The height varies from one level up to eleven levels. The traditional street system of the houses area meets the cartesian system of the collective housing area.
67
The concept is based on the idea of using the courtyard, multiple times and with different purposes, each time being related to the function of a volume of the assembly. The elements formed by the relation between building volume - courtyard - activity are contributing to the education of the minors. Using this principle, the modular assembly was created from building with different uses ( administration, visiting space, canteen, multi functional spaces, school, dormitories, sports, workshops). The connection between these elements is made through a long hall, often on two levels, that gives to possibility of connecting the private courtyards by opening the hall. 1. courtyards study 2 first floor plan

COLLECTIVE HOUSING
BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2014
75
The site is located in Giurgiului neighborhood, in the south part of Bucharest. This lot represent a buffer area between the individual houses area and the collective dwelling built during the communist period. The site is currently used as a parking lot. The area has access to many services, and transportation, but because of the fact that it is so close to an important street, the site presents some noise problems.
