DORMITORY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS location: BARLAD, ROMANIA 2017 DIPLOMA PROJECT

The challenge of the project was to propose a dormitory for around 100 students, who are coming from the countryside to study at a highschool in town. It had to offer sleeping rooms close to common spaces desined for study, recreation and eating.

11

Temporary living is characteristic for young people, that are still in the process of defining themselves as individuals, and can be divided into three smaller categories, such as high school students, university students and the young adults. When talking about temporary living, the category of high school students is not very large, because most of the individuals still live with their parents. But in Romania, a part of them are forced to move to a different location in order to have access to decent education. It must be taken into consideration the fact that they have different needs and habits, that can help and shape the design of their living spaces.

12

13

14

The site is located in the eastern part of Romania, in Barlad, in a neighborhood well connected with the city center by bus lines. The area studied is changing rapidly and it started when the building across the street was built to function as a military school. After a couple of years, it was transformed into a regular high school and it functions like that ever since. The neighborhood has been part of the town since 1990. Both this area and the north-east part of the town developed rapidly in the last 30 years due to the increased need of housing. Now, the site is mostly surrounded by dwellings, both individual and collective. There is also a social center for underprivileged minors, not too far away. The fact that one of the best high school in town is located nearby makes the site even more suitable for such an architectural program.

The garden will play an important role in maintaining a good environment for a healthy and complete lifestyle. The outside space will vary in design, proposing vegetables garden, grass areas and trees areas, in order to create different options of spending the time and also supporting the sense of community.

LIVING THE BANK SIDES OF TIBER location: ROME, ITALY 2016 CITY AND LANDSCAPE ATELIER

The project “Vivere le forre” is aiming to activate and to give a sense of organization to the Prima Porta area, Rome, by proposing solutions that would answer to a series of problems at a time.

27

The theme proposes four topics that should be taken into consideration: the high bank sides of the Tiber, the fast infrastructure developed on top of the ancient roads, a future scenario, the declining industry and the archaeological sites along the old Flaminia road. The project “Vivere le forre, aims to activate and to give a sense of organization to the area of Prima Porta, Rome, by finding practical solutions that to several problems at a time. The main problem is represented by the level of the rising water that on the one hand it is causing floods, by overflowing the river of Tiber and its tributary canals and on the other hand, by collecting the storm water into the residential areas between the bank sides and the hills. Other notable issues are the lack of services and of public spaces and the poor system of slow infrastructure. The idea of the project is to transform the spaces that are affected by the floods into a system of public spaces that would prevent the rising level of the water.

30

We started to identify the existing points of interest (historic buildings, the train station, the school) and propose new potential ones(a square and a market, a library, sport fields). For these to work as a system, there was the obvious need to provide a connection, that will represent the first phase of the scenario. We proposed a bike path, that would go from the point where the existing path ends, until the north part of Prima Porta, at the Flaminio Cemetery. This path will use the bank sides, which until this moment used to be both a problem, for creating “inside floods, and a solution, for stopping the overflowing of Tiber, to create a protected moving mean for pedestrians and bike riders. The second phase focuses on solving the water problem, by converting certain areas around each point of interest into detention basins. The third step of the scenario is about new building, with new functions. For this, the train station of the area is going to be rebuilt as a bridge construction, close to the market area. A new public square, the Saxa Rubra and the ground floor located into the bank sides are meant for general public services for the community. The second built intervention is in an area close to the school, and it is meant to give space for the cultural program of Prima Porta. The new construction will host a library and an open theater located at the point where the two water canals met. Both constructions will be integrated into the landscape by becoming part of the bank sides. The last part of the scenario, scheduled to end in 2050, is represented by the vegetation which is expected to be fully grown by then. This last part will make possible a complete understanding of our intentions

BOUTIQUE HOTEL

location: BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2015 ARCHITECTURAL INSERTION IN A HISTORICAL SITE

The theme was about the study of the ways of intervention in hystoric and protected sites and the coherence of the new interventions with existing constructions in terms of expression, volumetric impact or new uses.

41

The studied area is located in the center of Bucharest, behind a highrise curtain wall that marks the perimeter defined as protected area. 42

43

A master plan of the studied urban island was developed in order to make general recommandations, such as the conversion of the former factory into a space devoted to fashion, landscaping planning, memorial sites (the former Rahovei Way, the former Parish House) and new hotels, The site had a special situation, because the building in the southern part does not allow a minimum sunshine period of time because of the its higt height and the small distance between buildings. 44

45

My proposal for this urban island was a boutique hotel that aimed to solve part of the lack of services problem of the center. The presence of the buildings nearby dictates the first idea of a volume, that it is going to be shaped by the relation with the two streets and the need of light in the back of the lot. The building will have an inside courtyard, that is also hosting the main access into the building. The ventilated facade shows at the exterior side a perforated sheet, showing the old map of Bucharest.

SOCIO-CULTURAL HUB

location: BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2015 ARCHITECTURAL INSERTION IN A HISTORICAL SITE

The brief requiered the design of a multifunctional space or building, an architectural intervention in a site with cultural values, that had to connect the elite community with its capital city.

51

52

The site is located in the centre of Bucharest, close to Calea Victorei street, and it is surrounded by buildings with various functions and different architectural styles.

53

54

The building started to take shape starting from its close neighbours. This idea created a path on the site, a main courtyard, that makes an invitation for people to enter both volumes. The street corner though, was still the main acces point, so the building was lifted from the corner area, to create a separate acces point. The inside spaces are meant for hosting exhibitions and social temporary events. The angles of the walls are an expression of the idea of change, in activity, time and people.

REEDUCATION CENTRE FOR JUVENILES location: BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2014

The construction itself, by design, had to be part of the reeducation and the integration process of juveniles back into society.

65

The concept is based on the idea of using the courtyard, multiple times and with different purposes, each time being related to the function of a volume of the assembly. The elements formed by the relation between building volume - courtyard - activity are contributing to stages of the education of the children.

66

Using this principle, the modular assembly is made using more buildings with various functions (administration, visit area, canteen, multifunctional room, school, dormitories, sports, workshops). The connection between the pieces is made through a long hall, often on two levels, that gives to possibility of connecting the private courtyards by opening the hall.

WORKSHOP OF ECODESIGN AND GREEN LEADERSHIP location: MOGOSOAIA, ROMANIA 2017 foto credit: Pavel Radulescu

Lessons regarding upcycling, management and sustainability, combined with practical sessions of applying the knowledge made innovative product design happen. All of the participants worked on multiple projects in many teams. The last task led to the creation of toys, made out from available pieces on the site. My team’s go-cart was made with shopping cart wheels, some wooden planks, 2 cutting boards, a rope, an advertiing mesh, some eco friendly paint from a previous demonstation, new screws and two children willing to test it at any step.

W.a.VE. 2016 ATELIER JAVIER CORVALAN location: VENICE, ITALY 2016

The two weeks workshop was about building a 1:2 scale model of a single unit of an artificial wood, that will be used as a revitalizing element in an area that now, faces urban problems. Acqua-boulevard, our artificial wood, is located in a district surrounded by a water, that develops from the the garden city of Marghera and extends southwards, to the industrials site. The woods will play the the role of public squares, meeting places and paths.

BUNESTI SUMMER SCHOOL

location: BUNESTI, ZARNESTI, ARGES, ROMANIA 2012

The summer school is taking place in the heart of the nature, in a glade near the village Zarnesti. I had the opportunity to use natural materials such as wood for the outside pavement, for the shutters of the clay house, and bricks and sand for the walls of the future dinner area. I used traditional techniques, practiced along with local craftsmen.

#FoodRocks SECOND MENTION location: online 2018

The task of the competition was to design new kitchen accessories using only natural stone. My boiled egg serving set consists of two elements, the tray and the egg stand. When the stand is used, the place left behind becomes a space for egg shells. After use, everything is easy to clean. Put together, the two parts create a compact body that is easy to store. Two marble colours, two different finishes, on the food contact surface, the finish is glossy and on the back of the egg stand, it is matte and rugged, in this way suggesting the utility of the dump (cavity for shells).

STArS WINNING DESIGN location: BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2015

During this one week group training, the challenge was to design, using a selection of materials available, an office set that an organization would use to promote its business at different events. My final proposal, made of pink paper and graffiti spray, using cutting and folding techniques, contains a lady envelope, a CD case and a corner bookmark. My design was selected as one of the three winning designs from our work group.
