In stage 3 my studio elective was concentrated on studying Modernism. With tutors guidance I have studied history, theory, arts and architectural legacies of Modernism. I have found particular interest in works of Le Corbusier during the study trip around France. Visiting his most iconic architectural projects taught me a lot about the architectural thought, form, function, material, aesthetic and design. Knowledge gathered throughout the year inspired me to represent the modernist ideas and communicate it with my project design considering the new constructional technologies available now.

Stage 3:

Graduation project. Located in Peterlee, North-East England, the site is positioned next to the brutalist architectural heritage- Apollo Pavillion by Victor Pasmore (1969) in the “Sunny Blunts” housing estate. Unfortunately, Peterlee became a “mono-town” after the shut down of the main industry leading to the majority of population losing their main source of income. With time the situation had only worsened raising issues like unemployment and lack of education. “Peterlee Business and Culture incubator” centre is designed to respond to these issues by providing the opportunity for the young minds to pursue their business ideas, but more importantly to gibe Peterlee a new centre of meeting and recreational activities. The centre includes a co-working and start-up offices spaces, which are connected with public gallery, restaurant and workshop through the external public square. With the use of the polycarbonate facade and expressive openings the building appears to be a light-box during the night attracting the residents of Peterlee and during the day control the amount of daylight to come in to create the perfect conditions for the employees. It is really about creating the relationship between exterior and interior for a different user at different time of the day.

This year I had really pushed forward me modelling skills in terms of representation while experimenting with various media at different scales that was both fun and educational for me. figure 10 - view to the gallery soace throuth the external opening

Rendering + graphics- in order to

create renders I use 3D Models made in SketchUp/Revit to build perspectives and after render it in Photoshop or Illustrator with my graphic tablet.

Architectural technology+ construction- architectural tech-

nology was integrated into my degree since first year, thoroughly studying the structure of various construction types from the foundation to the roof junction, looking at the building construction strategies (figure 12-14), environmental impact and energy efficiency, application of smart systems and new technologies in the contemporary architecture. The process of refining and resolving building strategically I draw by hand in order to resolve all the technicalities, than after knowing all dimensions I draw it in Autocad to get the best quality of the work outcome. figure 12 - interior perspective of the gallery.

Working experienceWhilst studying architecture I was gaining my experience at two different practices during summer break. 1 st experience I had gained at the “Lengiprogor” urban planning bureau in Saint-Petersburg. I was assigned to the new re-development project in the city called Lipetsk. My task was to work on the site to track the property in the affected area, identify the quality, destruction and type of the ownership of figure 20 - design of the toilet properties and interview local people. At the end I had to write a report identifying all the properties in the redevelopment area and also propose my own conceptual drawing for the project. My 2 nd experience was in Moscow at the “2Sharp” advertisement agency under the design department. During my time spent there I had learnt a lot of working in software, including computer illustration, and also was given a responsibility for the minor design projects there. One of these projects was branding for the hostel “ three skies” located in Kamchatka, Russia where I was asked to create their restaurants menu layout and various packaging for the guests of the hostel (figure 19). During my time there I was also involved in the conceptual stage of the new project that involved the new “hipster“ ice rinks development for the supplier. I was given a complete freedom in style, organization and design. It was a truly gaining experience for me as well as researching the targeting groups, concept development and representation.
