“El golf es parte esencial de Benahavís”

Tiene el honor de ser el alcalde del municipio de España con más campos de golf per capita y tercero en número total de campos. Y eso le llena de legítimo orgullo porque él mismo es un gran aficionado a este deporte, que practica –no todo lo que le gustaría– desde hace más de 20 años.

“Golf is a vital part of our municipality”

He has the honour of being mayor of the Spanish municipality with the most golf courses per capita and third when it comes to the total number of courses. And that fills him with justified pride, as he himself is a great fan of this sport, which he has been playing – albeit not as much as he would like to – for more than 20 years.

José Antonio Mena Castilla ostenta además el cargo de presidente de la Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, cuyo territorio engloba la inmensa mayoría de localidades malagueñas que componen el destino turístico de golf líder de Europa, la conocida como Costa del Golf. Abogado, muy deportista, de carácter jovial, es amante de las motos y gran enamorado de Benahavís, como no podía se de otra manera.

El enamoramiento de la mayoría de los vecinos del pueblo con él es recíproco, y así lo atestigua el hecho de que haya sido elegido alcalde en tres ocasiones consecutivas.

Residir en Benahavís (unos 7.800 habitantes) comporta muchas ventajas, ya que aparte de vivir en un municipio con numerosos atractivos (bellos parajes naturales, amplísima variedad de restaurantes, un coqueto casco urbano...), los golfistas tienen un plus envidiable: los niños reciben clases gratuitas en la Escuela de Golf Municipal y los adultos pueden jugar sin pagar en alguno de los campos de golf de la localidad.

Benahavís es, tras Marbella y Mijas, el tercer municipio de España en número de campos de golf, con una decena repartidos en siete clubes: tres campos en Villa Padierna, dos en La Zagaleta y uno en La Quinta, Marbella Club Resort, Los Arqueros, El Higueral y Atalala (el Old Course).

En campos del municipio como Flamingos y La Quinta se han disputado torneos profesionales de categoría internacional como el Open de España Femenino, del Ladies European Tour, y el Seniors Match Play y el Benahavís Senior Masters, del Circuito Europeo Senior.

Y en un muy poco tiempo el Old Course de Zagaleta será escenario de la Junior Solheim Cup, en el marco del gran acontecimiento deportivo que marca el calendario del mejor golf internacional del mundo, su ‘hermana’ mayor la Solheim Cup, a disputar en septiembre unos días después en otro campo costasoleño, Finca Cortesín.

–El golf es uno de los pilares turísticos de Benahavís. ¿Qué importancia tiene para el municipio?

–El golf es parte sustancial de nuestro municipio. Prácticamente un 80 o 90 por ciento de su actividad está vinculada a este deporte, y por eso desde el Ayuntamiento tratamos

José Antonio Mena Castilla also holds the position of president of the Association of Western Costa del Sol Municipalities (Mancomunidad), whose territory encompasses the vast majority of towns in Málaga province that make up Europe’s leading golf tourism destination, popularly known as the “Costa del Golf”. A lawyer and keen sportsman, with a jovial personality, he is a motorbike enthusiast and – as to be expected – loves everything about Benahavís.

That love is reciprocated by most of the town’s residents, as attested to by the fact that he has been elected mayor on three consecutive occasions.

Living in Benahavís (around 7,800 inhabitants) has many advantages. Apart from enjoying its numerous attractions (stunning natural landscapes, wide variety of restaurants, charming town centre...), golfers have an enviable added bonus: children receive free lessons at the municipal golf academy and adults can play for free at selected local golf courses.

After Marbella and Mijas, Benahavís is the municipality with the third highest number of golf courses in Spain, 10 in all spread around seven clubs: three courses at the Villa Padierna resort, two in La Zagaleta and one each in La Quinta, Marbella Club Resort, Los Arqueros, El Higueral and Atalaya (Old Course).

International professional tournaments that have been played at top courses in the municipality, such as Flamingos and La Quinta, include the Ladies European Tour’s Open de España Femenino, and the Seniors Match Play and Benahavís Senior Masters on the European Senior Tour.

This year, the Old Course at La Zagaleta will host the Junior Solheim Cup, as part of a major international event headlining the Costa del Sol golf calendar in 2023 – its “big sister” the Solheim Cup, to be played a few days later in September at Finca Cortesín.

Golf is one of the pillars of tourism in Benahavís. How important is it for the municipality?

Golf is a vital part of our municipality. Practically 80 to 90 per cent of its activity is linked to this sport, and that is why the town hall works hard to promote and develop golf. We always aim to participate in events held in de fomentarlo. Siempre intentamos participar en eventos que se realicen en el municipio. En noviembre tuvimos uno muy importante, el Open de España Femenino, y este año va a ser igualmente importante por la celebración de la Junior Solheim Cup en La Zagaleta.

–¿Hay previsión de nuevos campos de golf en Benahavís?

–Sí, ahora se han iniciado ya las obras para la construcción de otro campo de golf: Real de La Quinta, un proyecto muy bonito alrededor de un lago, y estamos además a la espera de la ampliación de El Higueral (tiene 9 hoyos en la actualidad). Los campos de golf siempre son bienvenidos.

–Benahavís tiene la ventaja de que es uno de los municipios malagueños de mayor superficie de la Costa del Sol y de toda la provincia de Málaga...

–Sí, y además es uno de los municipios de mayor crecimiento relativo de España en población, y urbanísticamente también experimenta un importante desarrollo, teniendo además en cuenta de que solo un 5 por ciento de su superficie está desarrollada urbanísticamente. El término municipal es muy grande y dos tercios de su superficie están especialmente protegidos, es decir, no se puede construir absolutamente nada.

–¿Qué atractivos, además del golf, destacaría de Benahavís para un turista que aún no ha estado aquí?

–Benahavís tiene muchos atractivos: su clima, su ubicación, en pleno corazón de la Costa del Sol, prácticamente el 80 por ciento de su suelo tiene vistas al mar Mediterráneo, su amplia oferta de alojamiento y de restaurantes –somos conocidos como el Rincón Gastronómico de la Costa del Sol–, sus bonitos parajes naturales, somos el segundo municipio que más suelo aporta al Parque Nacional Sierra de the municipality. Last November we had the Open de España Femenino, and this year will be equally important, with the Junior Solheim Cup in La Zagaleta.

Are there plans for any new golf courses in Benahavís?

Yes, work has now started on the construction of Real de La Quinta, a stunning project set around a lake, and we are also awaiting the extension of El Higueral (it currently has nine holes). Golf courses are always welcome here.

Benahavís has the advantage that it is one of the largest municipalities on the Costa del Sol and throughout the whole province of Málaga...

True, and it is also one of the municipalities with the highest relative population growth in Spain. In addition, urbanistically it is experiencing significant development, bearing in mind that only five per cent of its surface area can be developed. The municipality is vast and two-thirds of its surface area is specially protected: i.e. absolutely nothing can be built.

What attractions, apart from golf, would you highlight in Benahavís for a tourist who has not yet visited here?

Benahavís has many attractions: its climate; its location in the heart of the Costa del Sol, with nearly 80 per cent of the municipality offering views of the Mediterranean Sea; its wide range of las Nieves... En suma, una gran calidad y variedad en toda la oferta de ocio, incluida la del golf, por supuesto.

–El pueblo cuenta con una Escuela Municipal de Golf desde hace años. ¿Qué balance nos puede hacer de ella?

–La verdad es que ya son muchos años y es un orgullo para Benahavís contar con esta Escuela y su campo de prácticas en las instalaciones deportivas del municipio (ubicadas junto al casco urbano del pueblo). Tiene mucha aceptación, y no solo por los niños, que son los que pertenecen a la escuela, sino también por los adultos, ya que se imparten clases para ellos por la tarde.

–Y además la Escuela está siendo cantera de jóvenes promesas del golf español...

–Desde que se inició la Escuela, han salido unas cuantas figuras, sobre todo chicas, que son las que están triunfando ahora, y algunas a gran nivel, como Julia López, que está en Estados Unidos. Por primera vez una amateur de Benahavís y de la Costa del Sol va a jugar el Augusta National Women’s Amateur (la ganadora de este torneo, que incluye a las 45 mejores del ranking mundial –Julia era 14ª en febrero), obtendrá invitaciones para disputar tres majors profesionales). Así que estamos encantados.. ■ accommodation and restaurants – we are known as the “Gastronomic Corner of the Costa del Sol”; and its beautiful natural landscapes, being the municipality that contributes the second largest expanse of land to the Sierra de las Nieves National Park... In short, great quality and variety in all leisure activities, including golf, of course.

The town has had a municipal golf academy for many years. What is your assessment of its contribution to Benahavís?

Benahavís is proud to have this academy and its driving range, located in the municipality’s sports facilities next to the town centre. It is hugely popular, and not only among children who form part of the academy, but also with adults, as they can take classes in the afternoons.

The academy is also a nursery for promising young Spanish golfers… Since the academy opened, several young stars of the future have emerged, especially girls, who are the ones currently enjoying success, and some at a particularly high level – such as Julia López, who is in the United States. For the first time an amateur from Benahavís, and the Costa del Sol, is going to play in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. (The winner of this tournament, which includes the 45 top amateur women golfers in the world ranking – Julia was 14th in February – will receive invitations to play in three professional majors).
