islamic relief 20 years of serving humanity ISLAMIC RELIEF is a British aid agency addressing the needs of the world’s poorest people. Founded by Dr Hany El Banna, Islamic Relief received its first donation of just 20p from a young boy. Twenty years on, and the organisation has grown into a worldwide institution with seven figure budgets and hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries. Islamic Relief has its headquarters in Birmingham and field offices in Albania, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Chechnya, Egypt, India, Kosova, Mali, Pakistan, Palestine, and Sudan. The field offices are responsible for implementing longterm development projects, managing orphan sponsorships and undertaking emergency relief work in their respective regions. In addition, Islamic Relief has skilled teams of staff capable of responding to disasters and emergencies in any region of the world.

What does Islamic Relief Do? Islamic Relief ’s work ranges from emergency relief to long-term development projects in areas such as water and sanitation, health and nutrition, orphan sponsorship. Wherever possible, we aim to empower individuals and communities to become selfsufficient and work towards building their own future. With the help of our donors, we have managed to improve the lives of millions of people over the last 20 years. Orphan Sponsorship – Taking care of orphans is a communal responsibility for Muslims, and one that Islamic Relief has been committed to since its earliest days. In ten countries around the world, Islamic Relief cares for over five thousand orphans and their families, either through one-toone sponsorship or through general welfare funds. These vulnerable children are provided with food, shelter, housing, clothing, healthcare and education.

Our aim is to ensure their welfare, both materially and emotionally, and give them the means with which they can lift themselves out of poverty and distress.

developing countries. Islamic Relief has established several schools, health centres around the world, and helps communities gain access to potable water.

Emergency Relief – Islamic Relief was born out of the Sudan famine in 1984 and has since responded to numerous natural and man-made disasters. Our Emergency Response Unit is always on standby, ready to reach victims in the shortest possible time. The priority is always to provide the basic necessities of food, water, shelter and medical treatment to as many people as possible. With twenty years of first hand experience, Islamic Relief has established itself as a worldwide emergency relief agency.

Income Generation – Islamic Relief believes in helping people to help themselves. Our income-generation projects aim to help individuals utilise their own skills and resources to become self-reliant. By offering vocational training, loan schemes, promoting local economies and encouraging refugees to return home, Islamic Relief provides thousands of people with new opportunities to earn a sustainable income.

Development Projects – Many developing countries lack the basic infrastructure necessary for the poor to escape the cycle of poverty. Islamic Relief is committed to supporting educational, medical and water and sanitation projects in

Through the generosity of our donor community over the past twenty years, Islamic Relief has earned a reputation for its capacity to help the poor and vulnerable. Islamic Relief is now a well known and respected aid agency committed to the world’s poorest people.

A little change can change a lot… It’s all about change. Just 10 years ago, drug addicts snuck in and out of the decaying, shuttered building at 711 Florence Avenue, shooting heroin into their veins and smoking crack cocaine. With the soil contaminated by toxic wastes, this site was a serious hazard to the community. Then, armed with architectural plans and youthful tenacity, a group of Muslims took over, getting the building demolished and the soil detoxified. In its place, an immaculate, state-of-the art medical facility sprung up, buzzing with activity. What was once a threat to the health of the public is now a center of public health. The drug addicts lurking in the shadows have been replaced by a bustling stream of residents coming and going, the chatter of their children filling the air. The UMMA Clinic has flourished into a rich, life-giving center in the midst of LA’s most impoverished community. Sinking its roots deep in the local landscape, UMMA has kept growing along with its environment, keeping pace with the changing needs of its residents. As part of its growth, the UMMA Free Clinic recently changed its name to UMMA Community Clinic. Does this change what the clinic’s all about? Not at all. Its mission to care for the poor and uninsured will remain untouched, just as it has been for the last 8 years. Its new status simply opens new avenues and opportunities to bring more resources to its patients. According to a Muslim teaching, if we see something wrong, we must change it with our hands. When they built the Clinic, a group of Muslims did just that; and today, with the healing hands of all faiths and backgrounds, the fixing continues, changing lives one patient at a time. QASID

   

The word qasid is used to describe a way that is direct and smooth, and this is the way we believe the Arabic language should be taught. The Qasid Institute has quietly developed a reputation as one of the leading centers in the Middle East for Arabic language learning. A comprehensive curriculum taught over five distinct levels takes a student from the proper pronunciation of letters to a level of mastery: graduating students who have applied themselves will find understanding an all-Arabic university course to be within reach, and translating general texts to be manageable. Our graduate-level modules prepare advanced students to teach Arabic; one of our students has gone on to teach at UCLA, another has become a “hometown favorite” within Qasid itself, and several others now teach in their local communities. The term qasid is also used to describe an individual who strives forward with a direct, specific intention, and is a dictionary-perfect definition for the kind of student that Qasid attracts. Though designed mainly for university-level students and time-starved professionals, Qasid students have come as young as  and as old as , include consulate officers, young professionals, Fulbright researchers, full-time mothers, medical doctors, FLAS recipients, and Ivy League graduates, and hail from nearly two dozen countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sweden, South Africa, Pakistan, India, and Ireland. The Institute is spaciously housed in an oversized villa in the peaceful residential neighborhood of Kharabsheh, West Amman. Surrounded along its perimeter by a scenic garden of apple blossom, olive, and tangerine trees and a medley of colorful flowers, the villa’s classrooms overlook one of the many famed gorges of this ancient city. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access for students, separate study rooms for both men and women, a covered outdoor canopy that affords shade and a modest sense of privacy, and the sound of sheep being herded to and fro—these contrasts of old and new, East and West, pastoral and wiredin, among many others, offer a promising backdrop to a rich and rewarding educational experience for students selected to enroll in the program.

AVERROES ACADEMY originated through the efforts of a few concerned parents who began with the premise that this school would illustrate a union between knowledge of Allah and life as an American. It was their wish to guide their children to the best that America and her culture have to offer while anchoring their children’s faith to a foundation of Islamic knowledge and love for Allah and His Messenger. The school takes its name from Ibn Rushd, or Averroes, a 12th century scholar, jurist, physician and philosopher who made significant contributions to the studies of many disciplines. He sought neither wealth nor power, but fervently pursued knowledge. He did so with the belief that scientific scholarship is not incompatible with theology; rather, it can intensify awareness of Allah. Aspiring to the example of Ibn Rushd, AVERROES ACADEMY students find that the love of learning leads to the love of Allah. To encourage future generations to discover the harmony between this foundation and American ideals, AVERROES ACADEMY was created. ANDALUSIAN ARTS is a producer of specialty Islamic art and high-end printed gift items, including calendars (wall, desktop, or pocket), all-occasion greeting cards, and original prints by celebrated Iraqi and Turkish calligraphers. Averroes Academy proudly presents a special Chicago edition of the  “Longing for the Divine” art calendar. Twelve breathtaking images by world-renowned photographers of the spiritual and architectural tapestry of the Muslim world, coupled with the wisdom-words of the Qur’an, hadith, and the sayings of scholars such as Imam ‘Ali, al-Tirmidhi, and Sheikh Abu Madyan … a colorful glimpse into the living universe of the world’s most misunderstood religion, a religion whose principle aim is to kindle a fire of longing, love, and obedience to the Divine in the hearts of its adherents.

• Featuring the photography of Peter Sanders • New translations by Sheikh Nuh Keller and Mokrane Guezzou • Gregorian/Islamic calendars with lunar phases • Mosque, school and Muslim organization listings for the Greater Chicago area • Layout by British Book Design Award finalist Sohail Nakhooda
