Robbie Hamilton is a recent graduate of the Duncan of Jordanstone, Timber sculptures dominated Robbie degree show exhibition sitting alongside amplified video documentation of skateboarders using them as ramps – a social act that alters preconceived uses of a studio space. The artist completes the work by leaving marks and holes indented on the wall as a document of the event. Robbie feels his practice is honest in constructed and should therefore be display in just such a manner. The works in this exhibition focus on themes of colour, space, form and illusion. The notion to create abstract forms in space comes from his altered way of thinking through many years of skateboarding, which causes him to constantly look and think about possibilities in spaces. Several of the paintings are created on cement board with standard emulsion paints. Robbie likes the idea of giving value to working materials; showing them in a different, more appreciative way. His aim is to turn utilitarian objects into something original and noticeable. Robbie is one of a handful of DJCAD students who have been picked for the Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries 2015 (RSA:NC) Exhibition.
