BICYCLE STATION 2011, Praterstern, Vienna, Austria Site area: 1.700 m2

The Praterstern is one of Viennas most used transportation hubs and a starting point for recreational activities around the larger Prater area. This design is adressed to support and encourage commuters, tourists and inhabitants to use bicycling more in daily life. It should empower sustainable mobility but also house a variety of public functions. Connected to the elevated tracks of a train station its differentiated form plays with layers both vertically and horizontally. Big ramps create a inner circulation system both for pedestrians and bikers. A transparent public and urban space for exchange and connectivity.

Along the western railway tracks in Vienna there was the task to make an urban design proposal for unused and abandoned areas of the Ă–sterreichische Bundesbahnen. Our project tried to create a landmark like, car free area which works with the idea of sustainability and self-sufficiency. Public parks with urban farming on the ground level next to 3 towers housing the tenants create a green intersection in the viennes cityscape. People get the chance of being in touch with growing food and nature itself while the socket zones of the towers create urban qualities as markets plazas and economic hubs.

EXTENSION 2011 Technische Universit채t, Vienna, Austria Site area: 2.500 m2

The Technische Universit채t in Vienna struggles to provide enough learning space for its growing amount of students. Beside actual plans for its extension also the hochbau course of 2011 participated in this discussion. Our proposal lifts additional study space from the ground level to the first and second floor. On one side our construction breaks through the existing urban block structure, connecting an other courtyard. The resulting contrast but also its technical solution made this in an interessting experience.

ARCHIVE 2012, Verzegnis, Friaul, Italy Site area: 4.000 m2 BACHELOR PROJECT

Eugidio Marzona, an italian art collector needs a depot for his collection. A differentiated place for exposing, storing but also for researching the masterpieces of Minimalism, Video Art to Sculpture is needed. The topographic situation of Verzegnis’ mountain valley was both inspiring and complex to deal with. The design is based on the clients taste but also elements from the surrounding and regional context. I tried to develop a calm exterior with a divers inner spatiality for the different purposes.

METAMORPHOSIS 2012, Xi’an, China,

Site area: 16.000 m2 (110.000 m2) with: Sixten Stavelin, Peter Kleven, Eivind Fasting

VISIT:

During a field trip to central China we investigated about its rapid urbanisation. Rural to urban migration let us think about a link, strenghtening rural economies and villages through providing required labour and products for the growing cities. We invented an imaginative construction company. This firm should build up required buildings in the city using ruraly produced elements and components. The tradition of earth architecture thereby reflects in our Design proposal. Beside the companies headquarters we also developed a small masterplan using this contextually based building technique in a temporary way.

village prosperity During the laste decades the city growth has insured employment for migrants. The working conditions are poor, and many migrants earn below minimum wage. Though the conditions and wages are poor, the migrants at least has a chance for a better life in the city.

growth rate Population growth in Xi’an is expected to decline slowly over time as the city becomes very large. From 2005 to 2010, XIANs population grew by an annual average of 2.46% with a stepwise decline to just over 1% per year by 2030.

migrants It is estimated that 620.000 people without an XIAN Houko will migrate to XIAN in the next 10 years.

POPULATION

EMPLOYMENT

What if this could encourage more and more villages and villagers to do the same? The villages would grow both economically and socially, enabling farmers to stay rather than migrate to the city.

what if?

economical injection What if the villages and the villagers were able to invest in healthy, sustainable, local business?

the link

shaanxi We want to ensure a stable and healthy growth in the areas surrounding Xi’an, and reduce transport distance of the CEB. Therefore we choose to link the construction company to villages and rural areas in close proximity to the city. To reduce the environmental impact and cost of transport even further, the selected area should have train connection, or at least a proper, short distance road connection to a train line. Our examplified village and rural area lies approx. 70 km northwest of Xi´an, west of Sanyuan.

city development

win-win What if someone could extract the earth in strategic places, creating terraces for agriculture and dams for water reservoirs, and even use the earth extracted in sustainable ways that benefits both the urban and the rural environment?

what if?

landscape resources What if someone, either a private company or the state, could use the challenges of the Loess Plateau and its landscape to create jobs and resources in the villages and countryside?

outcome

sustainable and concious urban impact The Expo area serves as a concentrated showcase for earth architecture applied in the urban environment. As a newly erected dense part of the city, the different areas show different possibilities for efficient and sustainable solutions. Not only economical interest but also city inhabitants will see a new possibility for city development. As invited architects contribute to its publicity it will also have an international impact which increases tourism, cooperations, and hopefully exchange of earthen architectural culture.

The Crack

Restaurant

We designed a docking pier for ferry tourists visiting the Geiranger Fjord. Through this act ships get kept away from the end of the Fjord and out of the villages sight. Located at a cliff, tourists can experience nature directly and immediately also by getting liftet to higher viewing angles.Through a slight design, we tried to preserve the fjords unique scenery but also enable an deeper

DOCKING PIER : A docking pier supplies boarding place for the high frequence of ferry tourists to the fjord. In 5 kilometer distance to Geiranger village, shorttime visitors get a more direct and immediate experience of fjell and fjord.

A KRAKK IN THE WALL :

There is a new touristic highlight in the fjord. A crack goes from the sea level until a 500 meter high plateau. Through highrise elevators you can experiance characteristics of the rock and its topography from near and far.

SCENIC SPOTS : The southern cliffs of the Geiranger Fjord house typical vernacular buildings with beautiful outviews. By placing elevators and a restaurant into this cliff, tourists can experience the fjord from different angles.

DESIGN IN CONTEXT

Through the NTNU course -design in contexta group of 27 international students travelled to Chile for a hands on workshop. The site was located at a wetland called ‘humedal de Boca Maule’ where 3 structures were erected enabling inhabitants and visitors to experience and create conciousness for the nature. A design task followed the field trip during the semester in Norway.

During a short periode of time I had to invesitgate and design 3 different interventions around the wetland. The overall Masterplan was to protect the wetland but also place a public, cultural and residential proposal on its outskirts. After being on the site i tried to emphasize on qualities like topographies, vegetation, and strategic sites and find (infra-)structures with could function in a sustainable and benefical way in the area.

THE REVITALISATION OF GUT GUGGENTHAL DIPLOMA PROJECT

2014, Koppl, Salzburg, Austria, Site area: 150.000 m2 Tutors: Prof. Alfons Dworsky, Prof. Cuno Brullmann, Prof. Nott Caviezel

My diplomathesis, which i worked on during 2014, dealt with an abandoned preindustrial area close by the city borders of Salzburg. The Ensemble Gut Guggenthal has its roots as an agricultural and sheltering waypoint, just outside of salzburg in medieval times. After its enlargement in the 19th century, it shortly functioned well as a beer brewing and hosting space enjoying high visitor and production frequencies just until the first world war. During the last centuries it was barely used and stood empty for most of the time which lead more and more to the deterioration of the building structures. After several attemps of refurbishment, its new owners took over the area and generously help me with access and communication on the property. It was interessting to study the history and potentials of the place which also contributed to find a new proposal for its asage and future. Topics of heritage protection, economy and studies about possible functions within an historic environment were great fields to work in.

Design & Build Boca Maule 2013, Coronel, Chile, Site area: 10.000 m2 Tutors: Sami Rintala, Pasi Aalto

This hands-on workshop was the practical fieldwork before the design in context course. The task was within 3 weeks to form a team, find a site, design according to the available materials and built the project. The outcome were 3 projects situated along the wetland of Boca Maule. The should enable the nearby living inhabitants to use the space and get in connection with their natural surroundings. it was intense 3 weeks but which connected us with each other and formed our deeper understanding of the context we should design later on.

Design & Build Aus.b端xen 2013-2014, Mobiles Stadtlabor am Karlsplatz, Vienna, Austria Site area: 100 m2 Tutor: Peter Fattinger

Towards the 150th birthday of the technical university of Vienna a workshop took place to question and extend learning and communication areas of the university into the public areas of the Karlsplatz. With a team of around 20 students a pavillion was designed and build consisting of 6 shipping containers setting a new landmark into the urban context of vienna. Heavy lifting and velding was necessary to fulfill this task which helped me to deeper understand the characteristics and working methods with metal.

Design & Build La Termica 2015, Sentro Cultural la Termica, Malaga, Spain Site area: 100 m2 Tutor: Dagur Eggertsen, Sami Rintala

In the tropical gardens of a cultural center of the municipality of malaga the task was to errect an garden/park pavillion to fill and connect to unused corners of its surroundings. Scandinavian, spanish and other european fellows joined together to make this possible during the 2 weeks of workshop. The design was smartly related to an single wood dimension of 2x6 which lead to fluid process on site.

Workshop brito.rodriguez 2015, Belem, Lisboa, Portugal Site area: 100 m2 Tutor: Ines de Brito, Gilberto Rodriguez

The task of developing a room for contemplation was a long seeked one and it made it even more interessting thinking about this in the context of a city. During one week we studied site and developed a proposal which was dealing on with 2 materials (stone, concrete, steel, water, vegetation or gravel) Doing this during holidays made it feeling intense but the environment, the participants, their outcomes and its exhibition were a good reward. In addition did i actually enjoy to work just with my hands not using the help of a computer to solve this task.
