THE PUBLIC SPACES OF DERBY The city center of Derby has a variety of public spaces, parks and squares. There are the winding streets and alleys a heritage from the medieval periods of the town. These are accompanied by small and often hidden squares behind the facades facing the streets. Like many other towns, Derby have had its fair chair of modern development, however, many of the city’s squares are old and historical market places. The main square has been a place for trade for over 100 years. The market hall to the south, was opened to the public in 1866 and the Derby River Gardens was laid out in 1905 by a local philanthropist. The variety of public spaces creates a balance between uses. The main square functions as a place for large markets and fairs, hosting temporary constructions as large as Ferris wheels. The small public spaces inside the city blocks provides intimate environments for a cup of tea in private. The River Gardens offers recreational qualities, expanded in the near lying fields of Bass’s Recreational Ground. There is with no doubt a strong identity created from the different historical layers of the public spaces of Derby; creating an intricate foundation for the future developments of the city. HOW TO READ THE MAPS All the maps have simple descriptions accompanied by a photograph of the major characteristic of the space. There is also information of the area in m2 as well as the width and length of the space. To the right you can see and example of how the measures are taken on each place. The measures are approximated and only tells one part of the story of what the space is. A space, and squares in particular is perhaps more than anything determined by the buildings surrounding it and what function they hold. The main buildings surrounding the spaces are indicated on the maps with some additional information of the other surrounding typologies in the description text.
