December 2020

What’s Inside Explore downtown magic with the storefront storywalk! Visit downtown Anderson this December for a special, self-paced walking tour of the book The Magic Snowflake by local artist and author Scott Foster. The illustrations and text of each page in the book will be featured in store windows along Main Street. Start with the first page at Belle Beauty, then follow the map on the sidewalk and read the magical story, or have the book come to life in a dramatic reading podcast produced by Market Theatre! Storywalks are a great way for families to share the magic of reading, and the storefront storywalk is the perfect opportunity to encourage a love of reading and practice literacy skills while supporting downtown Anderson. After finishing the story, visit Carolina Wren Park for Holiday Ice, take pictures by the Christmas tree, or visit one of the local businesses that have copies of The Magic Snowflake available for purchase. Celebrate the launch of this new storywalk in Carolina Wren Park on Saturday, December 5 at 1:00 pm. Hear the story behind the book from author Scott Foster, enjoy activities with library staff, and take a photo at the ornament sculpture. Then, join Scott as he leads you to the first stop for the storywalk or stay in the park for Holiday Ice starting at 2:00 pm. Visit the Anderson Main Library for a special scavenger hunt based on the book, then check out The Magic Snowflake or explore additional books perfect for the holidays. Complete the scavenger hunt and be entered in a drawing for a copy of the book and other fun prizes. Children can pick up a Take ‘n Make crystal ornament kit to make their own snowflake and adults can pick up a Take ‘n Make craft kit to make a winter evening scene, while supplies last. This unique event is presented by the City of Anderson in partnership with the Anderson County Library System with a dramatic podcast by Market Theatre.

Staff Picks These December staff picks highlight books about family, just in time for the holidays. Find these books on the shelf or check out the eBook or digital audiobook with the Libby app. This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper Adult Fiction Following the death of his family and discovery of his wife cheating, middle brother Judd goes home to sit shiva with his slightly dysfunctional family. While the premise sounds a bit tragic, expect to laugh out loud at the antics of his family as they come back together and heal the rifts between them. My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman Adult Fiction Family comes in all sorts of forms and this novel from best-selling author Backman celebrates both the family you’re born into and the one you choose. Following the death of her grandmother a young girl goes to each neighbor to apologize for her grandmother’s behavior (at her behest), but along the way she learns about the rich relationships her grandmother has left behind for her to heal in. Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane Adult Fiction This serious family tale explores the pain of family tragedy and addiction, but also forgiveness and the ability to move forward even from the darkest of moments. Part love story and part family drama, you won’t regret taking the time to read this one.
