photodistorzija

PHOTODISTORZIJA 4 I consider this essay to be both an announcement and a personal experience of works submitted to this year’s Photographic Biennial in Poreč. As a member of jury, I regard the applications generally do not yield a true insight into a capacity of each particular work. All the more, the opening event is a moment of expectation and surprise. While reading the application forms, the jury wished to draw out the maximum and avoid misjudgements, but only the opening will give a true picture. Ever since its foundation in 2003, Photodistorzija has intended to present photographs in all the forms of its appearance: from classical analogue to digital photography; from photography as a pure document to subsequently manipulated or computer-generated photos. Openness towards genres and the application of photographic media is stated in the contest propositions. Logically, this is also reflected in the actual selection. We should, however, mention that that the exhibition’s review character additionally evolves from the jury’s intent to include all the examples presenting the noneveryday treatments of photography such as, for example, a print technique. We should not neglect a fact that the actual title, Photodistorzija, directs our attention towards the possibility of reversing or twisting of, tentatively, known photographic matrixes. About hundred individuals applied for a biennial, mostly amateurs. This is not unusual for two essential reasons. The first is that any Croatian wishing to study photography has to attend international arts schools abroad (Prague, Padua, Milan, London) since there is no specialized study of photography in Croatia yet. The second reason concerns the fact that photography, during last fifteen years, underwent democratization at an unsurmised rate. There are but few people today that are excluded from the world market of digital, easily portable and cheap cameras. Photography has seen the end of elitism. Besides a large number of potential photographers, this resulted in a huge amount of drab photos that arise before the object in the eyepiece is actually selected, because “clicking” is as simple as holding a camera in one’s hand. Such works have not entered jury’s selection.

The diversified company of 4th Photodistorzija grasps all the general places of photo-thematics: portrait, architecture, landscape, travelogue, nude, semantics of urban milieu, conceptual approaches, female writing. Talking about portrait, I would like to mention Antonio Pozojević who, though pursuing photography for a very short time, recognized a genre for which he feels special affinity and which he successfully follows. His presented works are endowed with all the characterises of good social photography, such as an awakened character of a portrayed person. He also targets well the compositional cannons, regardless of a camera angle. Denis Gržetić made an exemplary successful portrait of a girl, fitting her figure within his favourite, northern landscapes that evoke the painting of northern romanticism. Parallels with painting are unavoidable here, since for a centuries painting tried diligently to play the role of photographer. I am glad to mention Viktor Herak, who continues the tradition of nude portraits by employing “dark” 1980s iconography, which perhaps overloads his figures a little bit. By contrast, Darko Tripar portrayed a female body, deprived of everything superfluous but a movement of slowly turning around itself, in semi-darkness. The absence of human figure in a desolated landscape, as well as accentuating the sombre atmospheres, are the main parameters played with by Karmen Orlić and Saša Vadanjel. Wistfulness is running though the frames shot by Ana Lorencin, who still uncovers their warmth, whether through a protagonist’s smile or by (un)consciously avoiding depicting the solitude. She mainly portrays two figures, even if its just empty chairs, such as in a case of infra-red photo by Ivan Legović and Dean Petrović. A similar take with a dominant blue-green colour spectrum, a work by Mirta Klarić, is peculiar to the aesthetics of world where computer-generating became equalled with the real space. Digital technology has changed our experience of nature and colour. Typical example of this is presented in a series of three photographs by Alan Matuka, where one cannot discern whether they are computer-generated, or maybe photographed and manipulated through a graphic programme. The same goes for a work by Zoltan Nagy and Tina Erman, who turn the real 4

space into a semblance of an artificial one. Lucija Bušić has won our votes by her polaroid, portraying motifs that are similar in following the visual criteria of graphisms, ones we do not perceive by employing “ordinary” look at reality. There are authors that have responded to the idea of inverting photographic and visual arts’ cannon, as connoted by the title of this event. These authors include Manuel Paljuh who submitted a photography made by fish-eye lens, or Irena Paskali and her panoramic photos of Köln streets, shot from a car with a fish-eye lenses, recording a horizon in 180 degrees span. Mario Gazić is the author of “painterly” portraits of distorted physiognomies, achieved perhaps by a rotation of digital camera, shot in dark with no flash. There are also photo-prints by Marin Dlaka, reminding of technique old as the photography itself, i.e. a direct print of negative upon paper coated with photosensitive emulsion. Interesting experiment can be seen in the photographic animation by Milivoj Šegan that convincingly reminds of lumino-mobiles, actually being the photographs of his own illuminated sculptures. Since mastering the techniques is not one of the preconditions for creating the photographs, the authors who find this moment to be primary are rare. Ivo Puniš has been pursuing photography as an amateur for few years, thoroughly studying the technical (im)possibilities of photographing: his motif is deprived of meaning and atmosphere on the account of attempt of photographing water drops without reflection. This corresponds with the example of Pula author Heni Tade, who also photographed the water drops on leafs. Here, a single drop reflects the entire environment, however in dimensions so small that a human eye does not discern details. Beautiful takes are featured in a series encompassing four photographs titled “Here Sleeps Granny”, by Ana Tomić, a senior student of Rijeka Academy. Outstandingly well framed photos of sheets convey the intimacy of a bed where someone sleeps. A different context, featuring another example of accentuated female writing, shows a series of situational photos by Jasenka Bulj. Her series

portrays details extracted from a whole, and is titled “Drinking Coffee” in order to underline its social context . For the same reason her work is exhibited in Atelier Club. One of the most unusual and less known authors that have been allotted space for integral presentation is Borjan Radolović, who seems to have found - without much effort - an efficient manner to photograph insects, depicting them with utter poeticism, as fragile creatures they truly are. Video installations and multimedia works have been assigned to Mala Gallery that will host the works by Davor Sanvicenti, Goran Škofić, Rainer Gamsjäger and Momoko Seto, of which two latter pursue the issues of processes on earth, water elements (Gamsjäger) i.e. water and salt as two opposing elements within a death-life alternative. These works are truly metaphors, sublimations of all the questions in a single suggestive audio-visual experience, where you cannot think of anything but simply enjoy the view of large formats in HD (Seto). Completely unexpectedly, Goran Škofić corresponds with previous authors by presenting his work “Neon Sky”, offering aesthetic experience of sky in a very similar manner. As to Davor Sanvičenti’s work, I cannot claim anything before experiencing it directly during the actual opening event. The last trio in Zucatto will follow the triple composition of gallery. The presentation of three diverse authors is conceived as an easy melting in an ascending order, from conceptual photography by Jelena Blagović located at the ground floor, through intimist close-ups and open series of exteriors by Sofija_Silvia, to travelogue photography by Luka Baljkas located at the gallery’s top.

LUKA BAJLKAS / Zagreb, Hrvatska

OBLICI HINDUKUSHA / SHAPES OF HINDUKUSH

Ing Aeronautike. Obilazi Australiju, Eritreju, Yemen, Ugandu, Tanzaniju, Indiju, UAE, Singapore, Indoneziju, Libanon, Oman. Njegove fotografije objavljivane su u raznim UNovim publikacijama o Afganistanu i Istočnom Timoru, u National Geographic Hrvatska, Globusu.

Born in 1974 in Zagreb, where he finished elementary school and, afterwards, the School of Aeronautics. After a year at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb he enrolled the Military Pilot Academy in Zadar. In 1997 he dropped out of the Pilot Academy and in 2000 graduated in aeronautical engineering. He began pursuing photography back in the 1986, getting advices from his father, an experienced photographer who back in the 1960s owned his own amateur laboratories in Zagreb and Libya. In 2001 Baljkas left for East Timor and Indonesia where he was engaged in humanitarian air operations, organizing air support in connection to the proclamation of independence of East Timor from Indonesia. Consequently he leaves for Afghanistan, remaining there for five years, photographing from all the angles, mostly the airborne perspective. He uses all of his time to travel and photograph, visiting Australia, Eritrea, Yemen, Uganda, Tanzania, India, UAE, Singapore, Indonesia, Lebanon, Oman. His photos were published in various UN publications on Afghanistan and East Timor, in the Croatian edition of National Geographic and in Globus Magazine. In June 2009 he was proclaimed a photographer of the year by the Photodays Festival in Rovinj. Presently, he is based in Zagreb. tel. +385 (0)91 573 22 70 lbaljkas@yahoo.com www.baljkas.com

The project resulted from my numerous helicopter flights over the central plains of Afghanistan, Hindukush massive (Hindu Slaughter) on a route from Kabul to Bamiyan to Panjao to Nili (Daikundi) during 2005-2008 period. It took several years and many flights and photographs to crystallize the idea as to how and in which time to present these expanses, this large, empty, mostly uninhabited hilly space. General problems included pairing the flight with the best light conditions. I have decided to concentrate on the winding ridges in canyons where rivers arise and disappear, born of snow melting from the summits, leaving behind trails in amazing colours. The photographs of Band-e-Amir lake, located almost 1 hour of flight from Bamiyan at 3000m ash, conjure the area’s height, while air dryness only strengthens the sharpness of photography that was taken with ordinary 20 mm lens. When photographing people playing football on a spacey plateau of Dragon Valley near the Bamiyan, I wished to portray the incredible expanse where once upon a year the people of Hazar ethnic group gather on 21 March to celebrate Persian New Year, Naw Ruz. Afghanistan is perceived as the leading bad news, as disintegration and anarchy, suicide bombers, demolition, Taliban and opium, the proverbial apocalypse. This series of photographs is my small contribution to another, more positive vision.

PRIJE MENE / BEFORE ME

Školovanje nastavlja u Engleskoj gdje završava dodiplomski i diplomski studij umjetničke fotografije na University of Westminster u Londonu i stječe diplomu magistra fotografije. Surađuje s brojnim umjetnicima, novinama i magazinima.

U seriji fotografija “Prije mene” propitujem vlastiti identitet u odnosu sa svojom majkom, gledajući kroz vrlo opipljivu - materijalnu stvar – majčina ljubavna pisma. In a photographic series Before Me I question my own identity in relation to my mother, looking through a very palpable, material items – my mother’s love letters. I link reading others’ love letters to a dose of uncivilized and voyeuristic behaviour, but also with feelings arising from expectation and opening, diverse texture, smell of old things and worn-out paper on which they were written, as well as with a fact they have been kept all these years. Letters from a series of photographs Before Me have been written from 1968 to 1981 and are related to a time from my mother’s puberty to the first years of her relationship with my dad. In this period there was no internet, e-mails, sms, chats and other today available means of communication that have, as a rule, replaced the writing of letters. Speed and superficiality of today’s written communication, as well as instability of media, leave almost no space for insights, experiencing and emotional time-distance from the expressed feelings. Besides, they are almost impossible to preserve and archive, as hand-written letters once were. On the other side, the theme touches on the subtleness of relation with my mother, who hereby opens doors to her own intimacy, and through her letters lets me inside the world of her past romantic feelings, leading me towards questioning my relation to herself, as well as to getting to know one, previously unknown, part of her character and personality.

Born in 1983 in Zagreb. Graduated from the Photographic Department at the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb, after which she studied photography at Istituto Superiore di Fotografia e Arti Visive, Padua, Italy. She continued education in England where she completed the undergraduate and graduate study of art photography at University of Westminster in London, eventually gaining the Master of Photography diploma. She works as an art assistant with the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, Department of Filming, Chair of Photography. She also teaches at the Photographic Department at the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb. She exhibited at numerous exhibitions in England, China and Croatia and is a member of the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts. SofijaSilvia (Silvia Potočki Smiljanić)

OBIČNA TUĐINA / COMMOM OUTLANDS

Rođena u Puli, živi i radi na relaciji London-Prag-Pula. Magistrirala je likovnu umjetnost pri Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design London 2007.

Born in Pula, SofijaSilvia (Silvia Potočki Smiljanić) lives and works between London, Prague and Pula. In 2007 she obtained Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design London 2007. Her international exhibitions include: Camera Austria Gallery in Kunsthaus, Graz, Austria; Photo Gallery APT, House of Photography, Slovenia. She participated at an international group exhibition titled Searching for the Place of Oblivion in Art Pavilion Zagreb. SofijaSilvia was one of the four finalists for Radoslav Putar Award in 2009, as well as one of this year’s twelve favourites of Filip Trade Collection presented at Finalists exhibition, at Gradska Gallery Labin. Her works were published internationally, by Austrian magazine Camera Austria International, Czech magazine Blok, Slovenian magazine Fotografija, as well as Croatian magazines Kontura, Čovjek i prostor and Oris. She graduated from FAMU – Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Czech Republic. SofijaSilvia presently works at a project on Brijuni Island.

One’s own experience cannot be explained or fully undestood by mere disclosure of facts; therefore to communicate beyond description one must strike a poetic truth. The photographs presented in this project as sequences and single images are like thoughts, verses, written in a diary. They are records of my experience and memories of two different and geographically distant places: of London and a bit of English countryside and Croatia, mainly Istria, the place where I am from. All the images, even as part of a sequence, are framed independently and remain separate. In such way they suggest movement within the sequence and within the entire body of work. By being separate, each image has the potential of being combined with any other and although this does not physically happen, the possibility is retained. In the gallery space they are presented as timelines that flow independently, as having no end and no beginning. As the sequences coexist within the work, independent but relating to each other, so do the two worlds represented within them. They coexist like parallel universes and each time traveling from one place to the other seems like moving to a different plane.
