photodistorzija

Međutim, masovna dostupnost tehničkih inovacija, digitalizacija medija, korištenje novih praksa, ishodišta su istraživanja drugih konteksta, forma i sadržaja, iznad odnosno izvan uobičajenih parametara izbora žanra, motiva i tehničkih zahvata.

PHOTODISTORZIJA 5 As I talked about this year’s Photodistorzija with an author who is also a friend of mine, he reminded me of the original concept of Photodistorzija. Two concepts are crucial for understanding the intentions of this project: the medium of photography itself, only recently considered as equal to other visual arts, and its digitalization, which offers wider possibilities of expression. We know that photography is the essential and most widespread aspect of modern visual culture, innately integrating the highest aesthetic canons of ”high culture”with the banality of pluralist views and commonplace beliefs about art. Photography has long been considered a tool for popular creation and consumption, rather than a carefully articulated world view whose aesthetic criteria are equivalent to those of traditional (fine) arts.1 It started its evolution 150 years ago, when it appropriated the painterly representational/documentary features, but then it followed its own semantic path of development. Its limitless possibilities of presenting reality were explored by many Modernist artists, ranging from Constructivists and Dadaists to such giants as Muybridge, Man Ray and others, who founded and defined the relationships of form and content, using experiments to examine the possibilities of the medium. However, the mass availability of technical innovations, the digitization of the medium, and the use of new practices – these are the starting points of research into other contexts, forms and contents, above and beyond the usual parameters of the choice of genre, motive and technique. Different modes of access and interpretation depend on the aesthetic reception and the need for quick solutions to visual problems. In recent years, digital artistic media have caused the traditional concept of the image to be increasingly considered as an artistically processed model.2 New terms have appeared – telematics, 1 2

interactions, generic processes of representation – with a rising tendency to unify the sensory abilities, to achieve a kind of perceptual fusion that leads to synaesthesia. These are the guiding principles of the concept of Photodistorzija. Since the currently restricted financial conditions of the ”crisis” version of Photodistorzija make it impossible to exhibit on multiple locations (art zones) or invite a number of well-known Croatian and foreign artists, it is hard to estimate to what extent it fulfills the goals of a visual review and a presentation of a cross-section of recent trends and practices. Our aim, nevertheless, is to present the selected 27 authors (a small number compared to previous biennials) in order to maintain the postmodern context of plurality and offer at least a symbolic insight into the current situation, ranging from pretentious kitsch and expressive documentary aesthetics of facts to the meditative audiovisual interpretation of ”Luminokinetika”by Srnec. This performance, which premiered in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb in February 2010, was created by the multimedia artist Davor Sanvincenti from Poreč, who won the 2010 Radoslav Putar Award for the best artist under 35, and the composer/producer Ivan Arnold, with the participation of members of the Ensemble of Postmodern Art, the academic conductor Neven Radaković and the orchestral musician Milan Grbić. On this occasion, the international character of Photodistorzija has been saved by the Venezuelan documentary photographer Italo Morales and the photography students from Ljubljana with their teacher Rajko Bizjak, who exhibits his latest cycle called ”Short Stories”. It records his intellectual attitudes towards intimate relationships, body and sexuality, paraphrasing various artistic or historical works and their authors. It leaves no room for gender interpretations or relationships between the woman/object and the man/voyeur/subject. Michelangelo’s ”Pietà” is transformed into the surroundings of a paraplegic family, a mother and a child in a wheelchair. Immaculata, the concept of Mary’s immaculate conception by Mastai-Ferretti (Pope Pius IX),

is used for a playful take on the paradigms of false Catholic morality, echoing Nietzsche’s Twilight of the Gods: ”It was Christianity, with its heartfelt resentment against life, that first made something unclean of sexuality: it threw filth on the origin, on the essential fact of our life.” Krleža and his book ”My Reckoning With Them” are paraphrased in the explicit phallic ”thank you” to the Slovenian Ministry of Culture, which has been persistently ignoring his work. This subverts Lacan’s assertion that ”the phallus can play its role only if it stays hidden.”3 The phallus is naked like the emperor/dictator who has been dethroned and exposed to the rabble to be photographed with cell phones in a slaughterhouse freezer. The latter refers to explicit pornography that is nowadays shown freely and uncensored by the world media, which exclude it from the contents designated as inappropriate by the same system. The works of Bizjak break many taboos, irritating the moral watchmen of church and state. Although different people see different things as obscene, immoral or scandalous (as shown by the everyday political discourse in the Parliament), we are still vulnerable to feelings of guilt and sin, brought about by the historical practices of singling out, passing judgment and pointing fingers, most often displayed by Western moral constructs.

i nestaje u crnini. Informacija se mijenja i gubi. Uski rezovi i zrnatost fotografije bude osjećaj kamene forme i vabe gledaoca k dodiru.

The photography is a medium that most people associate with the biggest measures of realism. We trust the photography and we accept it as a factual presentation of the outside world. One of the reasons that this argument is not valid, comes from the fact that our world is three-dimensional and the photography exists only in two dimensions (excluding a 3D photography). The reduction of the space dimensions at the surface inevitably leads to a loss, distortion and falsification of the information. In a metaphorical way, I have tried to introduce this phenomenon throughout a series of nudes. Bodies on photography literally project themselves on a two-dimensional glass surface and in the points of the projection, i.e. the parts where the three-dimensional body contacts the two dimensionality of the glass, they are being deformed and vanish in the darkness. The information changes and disappears. The narrow cuts and the granularity of the photography awake the sense of a stone form and allure the viewer to touch. A desire arises, but the photography as a slide, in opposition to a sculpture, cannot satisfy. In this case, we can claim that the sculpture offers more realism than the photography, since it is possible to walk around a statue, touch it. The whole glass surface that is in some photography manifested in the form of reflections emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the media and shows a symbolic distance between the photography and the reality. Certainly, a detachment from the reality is not to be understood negatively. Right in the example of a nude, using a photographic ”palliation” and ”lying” we detain the feeling of an excessive proximity that can lead to banalisation of motives.

KAJA BOŽIĆ / Celje, Slovenija

POSLJEDNJI DAH / THE LAST BREATH

Naravno, nije radio ali to me nije zaustavilo.

Mora postojati. Sljedim stope mnogih ljudi i osluškujem njihove priče.

Photography is my life. Unwittingly, but it has been here since my early childhood. I got my first camera back in the kindergarten. It didn’t work, of course, but that couldn’t stop me. It was no coincidence that in the kindergarten I was a photographer when playing at weddings. Then that summer came. My parents bought a new Kodak camera. It was extremely attractive to me, but my parents guarded it carefully. In the moment when I finally laid my hands on it, I ran through the path of photographers. I was literally running. More out of a fear what would happen when they caught me, but anyway, I took pictures while running. I had spontaneous photos of people at the beach as a result. My parents were furious because I used all the film, but I was proud because no one from the people that I had taken pictures of didn’t notice they were photographed. After the grammar school in Celje, in 2009 I entered the VIST (Higher school of applied sciences) where presently I attend the third year of photography studies. Last year I participated for the first time on the exhibition organized at the end of the academic year on the VIST. It was a fruitful year, since I have participated as a photographer on many projects, and the photographer Roman Fonda became my tutor. I gained experience working in a studio as well as editing photography. For the future, I am planning to have several exhibitions and projects I am working on at the moment.

For most of the things in the world there is a biological explanation. As something comes up to the existence, at the end it vanishes. A bond of two bodies, the beginning of something new, a birth, the first breath, a cry, a new being. It grows, it develops, it lives. When its moment comes, it leaves. Logically. However, it isn’t. Why? Because beyond this, something bigger and stronger exists. It has to exist. The energy of a personality that had been shaped for so many years cannot simply disappear and become equal to zero. This initial point resulted with the LAST BREATH photos. In this series, every participant had a possibility to express himself and to present his imagination of a last breath. Photos on a canvas live and breathe independently as well as the whole universe, apparently unfamiliar and lifeless; they in fact live in harmony with all the present. In themselves they hide a compound record as a witness of the past, with the vision of future signs. Paintings are in their essence, left to the laws of fugacity and degradation of the substance, as it is all around us. The power of life that made them, seeks for answers about life and death. It is the call that comes from the depth of the uterus of all uteri, a kind of science-fictional generational discourse. I follow the steps of many people and I listen to their stories. I need them to understand better myself, because every one of them is a part of me, and I am a part of them. Their presence is almost ethereal. Transparent and layered, they spin around me as ghosts, as a condensed energy that leaves trace on a hard substance. 27

AUDIO VIZUALNI KONCERT / AUDIO VISUAL CONCERT KAZALIŠTE POUP / POUP THEATRE

LUMINOKINETIKA / LUMINO - KINETIC Luminokinetika naziv je audiovizualnog performansa temeljenog na istraživanju svjetlosnih objekata Aleksandra Srneca. Riječ je o projektu realiziranom kao umreženi odnos i interakcija zvuka (klavir, violina, live electronics) i slike (prigodno programirani video software). Premijerno je izveden u veljači 2010. u Muzeju Suvremenih Umjetnosti u Zagrebu, dvorana Gorgona, prilikom svečanog zatvaranja retrospektivene izložbe Aleksandra Srneca Prisutna odsutnost.

Lumino-kinetic is the name of an audiovisual performance based on light objects studies by Aleksandar Srnec. The project is carried out as a networked relation and interaction of sound (piano, violin, lice electronics) and picture (appropriately programmed video software). The premiere was in February 2010 in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, in the Gorgona hall, during the closing ceremony of the retrospective exhibition of Aleksandar Srnec ”Present absence”. On the path of Srnec’s tendency to experiment, adventure and spiritual game, the authors generated an audiovisual research that leads us in the middle of Srnec’s light objects. Studying, carefully observing and recording light and sound trails that Srnec’s light objects leave behind, which are almost invisible, i.e. inaudible in everyday’s survey, the performance guides us to a new experience of comprehending the synesthesia. Connecting music, sound and the moving picture in a unique entity, Luminokinesis invites us to spread possibilities of sound watching and picture listening and to better understand Srnec’s methods: painting light with colors and substance. For this occasion, the conductor and composer Neven Radaković and the violinist Milan Grbić, members of the Postmodern Art Ensemble, will join in. 49
