Hello there, I’m Andika Raihan

Having recently been graduated from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan in architecture, I grew a fascination along the way in how architecture deeply impacts the world.

My studies have led me to believe that good architecture is conscious-of how it can embetter the lives of its users, how it can respond to its context, how it can minimize its impact on the environment.

Realizing how much there is to be learned, I cherish the opportunity to learn for the embetterment of me and others. This portfolio is a reflection of my work throughout my four years of study, inside and out of my academic setting. Email

RUMAH SUSUN CIHAMPELAS

FINAL ARCHITECTURE STUDIO PROJECT NOMINATION FOR SAA AWARDS XXXVIII

Location: Jl. Prof Eyckman & Jl. Cihampelas, Kota Bandung Mentor: Ir. Willy S. Sumamihardja, Dipl. Ing

Bandung is one of the most slum-filled cities in Indonesia. Mayor Yana Mulyana have stated that the cause for these slums in Kota Bandung is its status as a destination for urbanization. The high rate of slums have a negative impact towards the environment and its people.

The Cihampelas District has a reputation as a commercial juggernaut. However, as the economy booms, so does the flow of urbanization. Cihampelas attracts people from all walks of life to visit and even reside there. Therefore, the rate of poverty and slum areas increase accordingly. Public housing (rumah susun) is a solution to this problem.

RUMAH SUSUN CIHAMPELAS
2

Public housing in Indonesia faces a multitude of problems, such as poor reliability, a lack of supporting services and facilities, tight living spaces, and monotone appearance. As a response to the existing issues, the concept “vertical urban village” is proposed, which is defined as a “a three-dimensional community intended to bring back diversity, flexibility and neighbourhood life to cities”.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Rectangular base form

The basic form consists of a rectangle; linear accordingly to the shape of the site, with a central inner court to ensure all units receive adequate access to natural lighting and ventilation.

2

Subtraction towards the inner court

This subtraction allows further access for ventilation to the inner court and gives the inner court a sense of openness.

3

Massing addition

This extension of mass adds the amount housing units and utilizes the dead space at the northwest of the site as a badminton court.

4

10° Massing rotation

This rotation, which follows the shape of the site, optimizes site usage by the building.

CIHAMPELAS POLYTECHNIC OF DESIGN

STUDIO PERANCANGAN ARSITEKTUR 6

6TH SEMESTER ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

Location: Jl. Wastu Kencana & Jl. Cihampelas, Kota Bandung Mentor: Ir. Sena Tenoria, IAI

Bandung has a reputation as a city of education. With this in mind, the assignment calls for a polytechnic campus with studies in architecture, interior design, and graphic design. The program has an emphasis on its functions, especially the various workshops in which to accomodate the three different study groups.

The project has a unique condition in that the site contains a designated heritage building on its corner, which must be left untouched but can serve a function. This calls for a special consideration in regards to form response and function programming.

CIHAMPELAS POLYTECHNIC OF DESIGN
20

Good design often comes from collaboration; from the bouncing of ideas from peers, new angles of perspective brought forth from discussion, or insightful advice stemming from critiques. As an education institution with three brances of design, an emphasis is put on this spirit of collaboration, which becomes the focal point of the design.

This emphasis brings forth spaces inspiring collaboration from the different faculties and branches of design to spur on innovation. These spaces are open pockets of interaction that will invite students to participate inclusively.

DESIGN CONCEPT
+ = 21

The site presents several unique conditions to start with; its location at the intersection between Jl. Cihampelas and Jl. Wastu Kencana, and the existing cultural heritage building in the corner of the site.

First is the placement of the workshops on the south west which requires its own loading access. This frees up the south east in the site to respond to the node.

Further functions are stacked on the initial form; a semioutdoor student center directly above it which also acts as a noise buffer from the workshop to the upper functions, and atop it the studios and multifunction hall.

An L-shaped form extends, forming as a response to the node and to the cultural heritage building. The L-shape combined with the cultural heritage building creates a negative space which is used as a plaza; the old and new “collaborating”.

Corten steel is used as the main material for the facade, to emphasize the building’s function of polytechnic education.

Part of the L-shaped form is free from the perforated cortel steel panel facade to respond further to the node.

The ground floor of the L-shaped form is freed from walls, only supported by pilotis columns and shrouded by curtain walls. This is to provide transparency to Galeri Wastu, so that users and even passersby can view the cultural heritage building.

HERA COFFEE & TEAHOUSE BINTARO

STATUS: PROJECT PROPOSAL

Location: Jl. Elang Raya No. 15, Bintaro Jaya Sektor 9 Tangerang Selatan Partner: Eraldli Zandra

Jalan Elang is a busy street in Bintaro whose spatial identity is nested in its abundant cafes neighboring each other. There is a need to carve out a unique visual identity to differ Hera Coffee & Tea House among the other cafes.

This project offers a challenge in that the owner is insistent on keeping the existing building intact, in addition to a limited budget which constrains the design process with the following question: “what course of action will keep costs to a minimum yet with the most impact?”

HERA COFFEE & TEA HOUSE BINTARO
34

The existing building presents several challenges; its bulky composition and its orientation facing west. This means that the existing form would need a treatment along with the addition of some shading to prevent excessive heat gain.

However, the existing building’s interior contains a column-free interior which allows for a flexible layout plan.

EXISTING
CONDITIONS
35

The branding of the project targets a more mature market segmentation, hence the design aims to be subtle and more minimal. In addition, the limited budget means the design must make the most impact with the least possible cost.

The existing issues are remedied with the addition of a smaller “massing”; a canopy composed of wood lattices and false flat roof supported by sleek black steel columns. The addition of a green roof on the outdoor seating wall offsets the “imposing” sense that the massive wall exudes.

DESIGN CONCEPT
36

FLOOR PLAN

The design provides outdoor, semioutdoor, and indoor seating. While the outdoor and semioutdoor seating might be more suitable for younger customers, the indoor seating is designed with “arisan” in mind for the older female target market.

KANDANK JURANK WORKSHOP

STATUS: PROJECT PROPOSAL

Location: Kandank Jurank, Sawah Baru, Ciputat, Kota Tangerang Selatan Partner: Eraldli Zandra

Kandank Jurank is a creative space with programs such as drawing and painting lessons, outbond facilities, as well as occasionally hosting as the venue for music events. The project calls for the renovation for a run-down workshop space that can play out different creative functions, such as ceramic making and painting lessons.

KANDANK JURANK WORKSHOP
44
FREELANCE / DESIGN 2 45

The client requested a flexible layout so that the workshop can fit different functions, such as ceramic making and painting classes, with a capacity of 9 students and 2 mentors.

The design utilizes cross-ventilation and natural lighting to help the workshop sustain itself and cut on energy costs. To establish a functional relationship with the site and engage with the already active community, the design emphasizes semipermeability by using pivoting windows for most of the enclosure.

Vegetation lends the design some sense of privacy from its front side, which faces a busy part of the site, while large steps provide an opportunity for the community to sit and rest on the workshop while not in use. The entire design is supported by black steel beams, giving the entire workshop a sleek, thin look. Wood lattices form a canopy which partially surrounds a green roof.

KANDANK JURANK WORKSHOP
46

The design considers the physical context of the location; notably its main access on the center being a plaza with an opening, with two access points on the side.

Gravel fills the surrounding of the workshop to provide a visual and functional emphasis in contrast to the building, while still maintaining absorption for the soil.

FREELANCE / DESIGN 2
47

The massing of the design is fairly simple, given the low area size and simple size shape.

Wooden pergola overhang protects the interior from direct sunlight, while creating a play of shafe from the sunlight. The green roof absorbs rainwater while decreasing heat absorption.

The pivoting windows promote cross-ventilation and creates a semipermeable facade. The steel structure gives a sleek and minimalistic sense to the building, and the elevated platforms strengthen its relationship to the community.

KOMMUNARS

STUDENT ARCHITECTURAL JOURNALISTIC MEDIA

Kommunars is a student architectural journalistic media under HMPSArs focusing on discourse in architecture. Kommunars publishes these discussions in the form of zines, videos, podcasts, infographics and such.

After having served as the editor-in-chief for one of its publications (Minikomm) in 2019, I acted as its chairman the following year with the support of a talented team.

Special thanks to: to Jessica Michelle and Nyra Malika, who I relied heavily on for organizational duties, to Firzal Muhammad and Aldrianta Pribadi, two exceptional talents in graphic design, to Ayesha Mitza, who smoothened the editorial duties, to Jeremy Hanson, with his quick initiative in the audiovisual field, and the rest of the KOMMUNARS team, with their unwavering support.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted how we distance ourselves, and with it, how we interact, how we define personal space, and how we designate space. Due to limitations of printing physical copies, Minikomm 09 is instead tailored to the experience of scrolling on a screen, as it is how readers would interact with it at the time of publishing. This is achieved by seamless transition between pages, through the careful curation of color palettes and grading.
