As I write this letter in the early morning hours, I feel gratitude for being witness to some of the simplest of sensory experiences -- touching the dew on the grass and experiencing a rare glimpse of the sunrise. Within these pure moments are small spaces of comfort that are an interconnected part of my well-being and quality of life. This special “me time” is an important part of my daily routine. There’s something sacred about the early hours of the day. It’s a chance to start anew, allowing for inspiring ideas to emerge. During this time of year, I usually opt for working with yarns made with linen, bamboo, cotton, hemp and other natural fiber blends as the logical choice for staying comfy and cool. These fibers wear well and are often easy to care for. Taking a hiatus from wintry wools can serve as an opportunity to experiment with new yarns, which can give us a special perspective on working with alternative fibers. In this issue, you’ll find a good balance of garments, accessory items, and projects for kids and babies. In our home decor category, I’m thrilled that Martha Stewart has taken some time out of her busy schedule to chat about her new Knit & Weave Loom Kit and about her partnership with Lion Brand to produce her new yarn collection. I’d also like announce our new Knit-Along series. We’re starting things up with Amy Polcyn’s Sunny Bucket Hat. This lacy, openwork design is a great way to learn some new skills. Have fun!

A lot of established illustrators and designers deal with the same thing—students or young professionals that rip them off without realizing it. Addressing these young designers can be really heartbreaking because you know that they had the purest of intentions. So here’s a little post to all the hungry, young designers that are struggling to find their own voice, but end up a bit too close to their inspirations. There are definitely people that maliciously rip artists off left and right, and this post is not for them. They are evil and cannot be helped.

So how does owner Scott Peek find success in such a remote location? Here are three things we gleaned from our interview with him:
1
BE AUTHENTIC As the saying goes, do what you love. It doesn’t take long to realize that Standard Deluxe focuses on screen-printing because Peek loves it. The same goes for the monthly music events he runs—they’re about passion instead of money. It’s also why he lives and works in the country.
2
FOCUS ON QUALITY It seems basic, but Peek’s reputation for high quality helps him draw clients from the Caribbean, Canada and across the United States. A couple designers from Charles S. Anderson Design in Minneapolis even came down to Waverly to print for a week with Peek. David Carson’s been to the shop, too. People will travel for something great.
3
STAY OPEN TO CHANGE Businesses and industries shift all the time. Being successful means rolling with those changes instead of fighting them. At one time, Standard Deluxe consisted of 10 people, but today it’s Peek and a couple of part-timers. For big jobs, he might hire on more help. He never knows who might call out of the blue with a juicy project. – MICHELLE TAUTE 62

Flea markets are an awesome way to buy a lot of things with very little money. Spending a long afternoon with a few friends (and some refreshments of course) at a local flea market can do wonders to your mood. Many a time you do not find something that you have been looking for in a shop or a mall, but you might just find it at a flea market! For example, first edition of a book by your favorite author, or old currency, and many other knickknacks. All those goods available at such low prices, however, are bound to tempt you to pick things that you probably don’t need. You might even end up paying too much for something that is not worth the money! Here are some flea market shopping tips that will help you get the best bargain.

plan it out
early bird
read between the lines
It is advisable to make a list of things that you are particularly going to look for when you go to a flea market. It so happens that we sometimes lose focus on what we really want when we see so many goods. It is almost irresistible, as everything is at such low prices as well. You might just end up picking a lot of other things, but not what you wanted. Better make a list, pick the things you have listed out, and then look around for other things. It will also be a good idea to bring a pocket-diary to a flea market so you can keep a track of the money you are spending.
Visiting a flea market the day it opens and on any of the later days can make a big difference. The earlier you go, the more variety you will have. A flea market sells mostly second-hand goods. So it’s not like there will be multiple copies of things. This holds especially true for rare or collector’s items. Make the most of the first day. Also do not make haste to grab the things you see the minute you lay eyes on them. Take the time to tour the entire market and then go back to the stalls you liked. That way you will be sure of picking the best bargain.
Flea markets sell all kinds of things - books, clothes, jewelry, old furniture, etc. Most of these things are secondhand items. Try to gauge how old the item is before you plan to buy. Look for things like functioning, quality, how much has the item been used by the previous owner, etc. In case of books, flip through the book to see if any of the pages are missing. In case of clothes, check if the seams have come loose. In case of old furniture, sit on it! Also consider carrying a measuring tape along with you. That way you can actually measure the dimensions of a piece of furniture you intend to buy and check if it will fit in the place you have at home.
tip #4
tip #5
things not to buy
bargain
It might be quite risky to pick up health products from a market. Cosmetics, medicines are a no-no. You may never know whether the products are genuine or not. It is better to avoid picking these things. However, be very, very careful if you absolutely must pick them up. Check for the labels, see if they are genuine, check for things like manufacturing and expiry date, etc. Really scrutinize the product before you pick it up. Be careful and vigilant before buying such items to avoid possible health hazards such as allergies, infections, side-effects, etc.
Once you know how much the item you want to buy has depreciated, bargain! Do not end up paying the price of a new stereo for one that is a few years old. There are a few people who will be honest about the quality of goods they are selling. However, some might be out there to really milk the opportunity and dupe you! beware. Another tip here is: if you buy a lot of things from a single stall, or if you spend a lot of money at a particular stall, you can try to bargain with the vendor to give you one of the items for free, or to give you a flat discount on the sum total.

tip #6
take care of your belongings It is best to leave all your fancy and big purses and bags at home and come to a flea market with only your wallet (or better still, money in your pocket). The reason for this is, you have less stuff of your own to take care of and keep a watch on. Plus depending on how many things you plan to buy, your hands need to be free to pick up all the bags! If you absolutely must carry something however, go for a simple sling bag. It is easy to carry, and you can stuff it with extra things you pick up at the market as well.
tip #8
tip #7
don’t faint!
Unless someone at the flea market is really creative and has thought it through, there are chances that none of the stalls at the market will offer refreshments. Of course all that shopping and roaming around is bound to leave you tired, isn’t it? Stock yourself with some refreshments. Fruit juice and a couple of sandwiches should keep you going. Say no to plastic: I would emphatically suggest you to carry your own shopping bags, carry bags, or better still reusable shopping bags with you. You can fold up a canvas bag and keep it in your purse. You may even put two or three reusable shopping bags in your sling bag, so that you are well-equipped. Also avoid buying packaged drinking water. Instead carry your own water bottle with you.
tip #9
say no to plastic
drape it right
This might seem a little out-of-place, but some of you might appreciate it. It is best to wear comfortable clothes when you go shopping, especially to a flea market. Most flea markets open during the day, and many buyers like to go shopping around afternoon. With the sun up above your heads, you are bound to sweat! Carry napkins, wear a hat or scarf, protect your eyes with proper sunglasses, and wear skinfriendly clothes.

before being a model The Russian supermodel, Sasha Pivovarova was born on January 21, 1986 in Moscow, Russia. Since an early age she was interested in drawing and her mother did her best to encourage the girl to become a painter, even sent the daughter to an art school. After finishing secondary school Sasha entered the Russian University for the Humanities where she studied history of arts. To get profound knowledge on her dream profession she had to travel to Saint Petersburg to attend lectures at the New Acedemy of Fine Arts. However, in 2005 Sasha Pivovarova’s life changed dramatically.
MODELING CAREER Her close friend and a photographer Igor Vishnyakov, took a number of pictures of the girl and then sent those to IMG Agency in New York. Shortly after that Sasha was already booked for the Prada show, she actually opened their Fall 2005 show. This was nothing the girl could ever expect. Miuccia Prada liked Sasha so much that she signed her to a three-year exclusive advertising contract. After this great success with Prada Sasha became one of most in-demand models. Her face, which was often compared to an alien’s, was everywhere, she was promoting not only clothing and accessories, brands hired her to represent their beauty lines as well. She has done ad campaigns for such designers and brands as: Alberta Ferretti, Armani cosmetics, Biotherm, Chanel, Chanel eyewear, Christian Dior beauty, Gap, Giada, Giorgio Armani, Giorgio Armani beauty, H&M, Hugo by Hugo Boss, Jimmy Choo for H&M, John Galliano, Just Cavalli, Kenzo, Longchamp, LG by Prada, Maison Michel, Miu Miu, Miu Miu eyewear, Moncler, Moncler Gamme Rouge, Mulberry, Net a Porter, Olay, Phi, Prada, Prada eyewear, Prada Resort, Prada Resort accessories, Prada ‘Infusion d’Iris’ fragrance, Prada sport, Pringle of Scotland, Rag & Bone, Santa Lolla, Shinsegae, Thomas Wylde, Tiffany & Co., Uniqlo, Zara.

She appeared in the 2008 Pirelli Calendar and the same year Spain’s Marie Claire awards ‘Prix de la Moda’ named Pivovarova as “Prix International Best Model”. Throughout her career as a fashion model Sasha Pivovarova has graced a lot of magazine covers and photo shoots, some even a few times. Sasha is an It model at annual fashion shows. She has opened shows for Chanel couture, Rag & Bone, Rodarte, Pringle for Scotland, Miss Sixty, and MaxMara. She also closed shows, for PHI, MaxMara, Chanel, Pringle of Scotland and others. In the beginning of 2009, Pivovarova was ranked 2nd on Top 50 Models Women list (Models.com), and since then on she has always been on that list. In 2011 she moved down no further than number 4. Vogue Paris named her one of the top 30 models of the 2000s.

Despite the success of her modeling career Sasha Pivovarova tried to realize herself in other areas of life. She keeps on painting and hopes to become a professional artist one day. In one of her many interviews Sasha admitted that painting improves her mood. She takes inspiration from everything in the world – her travels, memories, friends, etc. Besides, she uses various canvases (hotel stationery, contracts, maps) in her work as well as tools (pens, pencils, charcoals, even coffee and wine). Her talent has been praised during two exhibitions which were held in New York (2008) and Paris (2007). And some of her works were featured in Vogue US, Vogue Paris and Teen Vogue. Two renowned designers – Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada – have commissioned Sasha to illustrate books for them, which she is currently busy with. Miuccia Prada’s book is to include drawings, photography, and collages. All we know about Karl Lagerfeld’s creation is that it will be based on Russian fairy tales. Another Sasha Pivovarova’s hobby is self-portraiting. She takes dozens photos of herself in the mirror at fashion shows and other places. This idea has become the basis for new Rag & Bone Do-It-Yourself ad campaign spring 2011 where Sasha along with models Abbey Lee Kershaw and Lily Aldridge photographed themselves.

SINCE THE WORLD came to know her as Miuccia Prada’s elfin muse in 2005, Russian model Sasha Pivovarova has stalked elite runways, graced the cover of high fashion glossies the world over, and upstaged her cloned peers with her razor-sharp, sweetly sinister appeal. In her pictorial wake, she leaves a full cast of gonzo characters: Hitchcock Blondes and beautifully deranged mental patients; even a gender-challenging John Galliano. Now 23, Pivovarova still dominates her field, and has effectively muse-hopped between Prada and Galliano, recently starring in his new Dior campaign, and ads for Armani, Longchamp, Chanel Eyewear, Biotherm, and Pringle. You now live in Brooklyn: Whatare your favorite places there? Is it much colder than Moscow?
You had your first gallery exhibit in 2008. And you are making a book for Prada.

My favorite area in Brooklyn is Williamsburg. There are lots of nice little shops and cafes on Bedford Street: I really like the art bookshop Spoonbill & Sugartown on North 5th and Bedford. My favorite places to eat are diners on Broadway and Berry, Marlow and Sons, a very cozy Brazilian place called Miss Favela, where I have Asai for breakfast and listen to live music in the evenings, and a Mexican place called Bonita, which is really great for rice puddings. My favorite places in Moscow are the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art: It has a wonderful collection of Impressionists; the Justo club, and Sandyni Bath, which is the oldest bath house in Moscow. For Russian food, I like the Zhiguli restaurant. And so far, New York is much colder than Moscow!
I am working on a book of drawings: it will be in the form of a scrapbook and include drawings, photography, and collages. It’s an endless process because I am constantly changing and adding new images/ I really hope to publish it in upcoming year— this was my other New Year’s resolution!
colleen nika: Did you have a New Year’s Resolution?
sasha pivovarova: I was on board 168 airline flights in 2008! My New Years resolution this year is to spend more time with my family.
colleen nika: You have such a signature feline runway presence, and were one of the first models I remember to capture the militant but alluring “death stare” that so many others others now emulate. Did it come naturally to you?
sasha pivovarova: I just walk how I walk. But I am also really inspired by the physical drama in silent films from the beginning of the 20th century—it’s ice cold and unreachable, like the stare of a sniper! I guess this look is something new that I brought into the world of fashion: a dark and dramatic, 19th century Russian literature and drama inspired look. But in a real life I am very positive and smile most of the time.
