CITY HOTEL
Jogja is well known city regarding its culture. Jogja citizen are close enough with its culture, they still do a daily activity based on thier culture. In case of that strong culture, we will not against with a new awkward building design. We propose the building ddesign with cultural approach. Materials element also important to be choosen. Local material is the best option to be well merged with its surroundings
STUDIOWORKS 2015
WALKABLE DISTRICT
Located on a historical site-building compleks, the idea is to optimize the area into walkable district. Pedestrian is the main focus to be well served. Walkable district is a key to bring people closer to the story of this historical area. We are not allow to change or demolished the historical parts, but what we propose is to build facilities to support the historical area.

BAMBOO EXPLORACTION

Before we build the pavilion, we start with mock-up study. Mock up study is the most effective approach to learn how we build. Each joinery system and all materals we needed must be done on the mock-up study phase. We also test our mock-up to make sure it’s strength and stiffnes of the structure. For this project, we have a professional Bamboo Architect as our mentor. In the earlier step of making the pavilion, we have a sort brief about how we treat bamboo. We learned a lot of technique about bamboo joinery and the most efficient way to work with bamboo. GADJAH M A D A UNIVERSITY

CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
GADJAH M A D A UNIVERSITY
How does urbanization impact the sustainability of the kampung and it’s cultural industries in Yogyakarta?
FOCUS ISSUES Ÿ Effect of urbanization on cultural industries in
kampungs. Ÿ What happens when young people move from kampung to the city? Ÿ How does this impact the production & sustainability of cultural industries in their native village? Ÿ Has urbanization changed the way goods are produced and sold?
URBANIZATION Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
Contributes to the development of cities. Reduced number of unemployed in urban areas, however there is also an increased number of unemployed in cities. Less people labour in villages. New behaviour not in accordance with local value.
CULTURAL INDUSTRIES & CHALLENGES Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
Production of goods & sustainability of cultural industries. Capital-produced cultural goods. Mass-production is economically beneficial but risks loss of tradition & meaning. Education.
GADJAH M A D A UNIVERSITY
CASE STUDIES
CEBONGAN VILLAGE Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
Bamboo goods industry - furniture, baskets, trays. Small village in Mlati, Sleman. 0/250 families in industry. 220/250 as farmers, labour workers. Customers & distributors visit village to purchase goods. 2 trucks, 600 sticks. 0/4 children will continue.
ISSUES
OPPORTUNITIES
Ÿ Migration and changing work patterns of younger
Ÿ Maintaining kampung society and rural use of land. Ÿ Connected to city to benefit from urbanisation
generation. Ÿ Sustainable use of land & resources (bamboo)
required for local industry.
infrastructure & networks Ÿ Means: cultural industry can operate autonomously & competitively, not compromising on craft, quality or cost. Ÿ Means: community can be self-sufficient & prosperous but not compromise social, cultural & community life.
CONCLUSION Ÿ Urbanisation results in large movement of people from rural areas to city, particularly the younger generation. Ÿ Changing education & work patterns. Ÿ Mass-production & competition threatens cultural integrity of products but provides easier means of producing &
selling goods. Ÿ City growing & changing urban structure & communities. Ÿ Sustainable urban planning can help preserve culture with benefits of modernised, urban environment.
