THE MANAGER

Good evening and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for this evening’s game against our visitor’s Fleet Spurs.

I’d like to welcome the Fleet management team, their staff, players and all officials and supporters who have made the journey along the M3 to Andover this evening.

Spurs have found this season difficult and are currently rooted at the bottom of the table. They are eight points adrift of Amesbury Town, who inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Spurs on Saturday Jack Vallis and Morgan Harvey were the scorers for Town.

Prior to that result, Spurs form had seen a bit of an up turn with wins over East Cowes Vics, Millbrook and Fawley since the turn of the year.

We come into the game having won last week at home to Hamworthy Rec and battled to a 2-0 win away at Whitchurch

The Hamworthy Rec game was a very tough game, as always against the Rec Chances were very few and far between for both sides, the Rec started better and took a deserved lead but we showed the character to get back level before halftime and then scored two quality goals in a 5 minute spell.

Against Whitchurch, we were very dominant and scored goals at important times and it was needed, as the Jam Boys battled throughout the 90 minutes and always are a threat, but we were able to claim the three points in the end.

We were able to bring in Layton Tulk from Bemerton Heath Harlequins recently, with Josh Moore going the other way. A big welcome to Layton, who has already showed his potential in the two games his has already played for us and I’d also like to thank Josh for all his efforts this season and wish him well at Bemmie.

We remain in a strong position moving into the business end of the season, with a number of key matches coming up over the next few weeks, the whole squad will be needed if we are to maintain our levels of performance.

Enjoy the game.

Buy a 50/50 ticket at tonight’s game to stand a chance of winning a cash prize!

THE CAMERA NEVER LIES

Action from last season’s meeting at Foxcotte Park. The Street were 5-0 winners on the day, with Luke Hooper grabbing a hattrick. Pictured is Shane Lock scoring the fourth goal, after left-back Lee Morris went on a terrific run and saw his effort saved by the Fleet keeper. Lock was on hand though to roll home the rebound.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WITH MATT BADCOCK – NLP EDITOR

Something very special is unfolding right before our eyes in the National League – and it’s likely to raise the bar for many years to come.

For the last few weeks at NLP Towers, we’ve cautiously held off talking about a “two-horse race” for the title but gripping late drama on Saturday felt like a decisive moment. The first twist in the tale came at Huish Park where, held 1-1 by Yeovil Town, Notts County appeared to be struggling in pursuit of a sixth straight National League victory. But, with five minutes to go, the ruthless league leaders managed to find a way through, courtesy of Ruben Rodrigues, and then clicked through the gears in stoppage-time with top scorer Macaulay Langstaff adding two more to complete a rather comfortable – if not flattering - 4-1 victory. It was the same also at Aldershot Town’s EBB Stadium where Notts’ title rivals Wrexham were similarly not having things their own way. Two-nil and 3-1 leads were quickly cancelled out by the stubborn Shots but the Hollywood finish was pure box office - a 96th-minute winner from substitute Sam Dalby helping the Red Dragons to a dramatic 4-3 victory.

Defeat for Woking at Altrincham and Chesterfield’s failure to beat Solihull Moors meant that the gap between second and third was extended to a mind-boggling 17 points and, given the form of these two big guns, it would take a huge turnaround in order for that deficit to be clawed back.

Saturday’s finale also put the National League statisticians on red alert. As it stands, no fewer than FOUR long-lasting league records could potentially be broken this season – and maybe even by a team who could still be playing NonLeague football next year!

With only one automatic place up for grabs, it is still very much all to play for. Failure to finish on top of the summit will not only mean that the runners-up will have a psychological setback to recover from, but also a gruelling twolegged play-off semi-final and final to overcome if they are to, at long last, fulfil their promotion aspirations.

The first major National League record in sight of the top two is for Most Points in a Season.

Crawley Town’s best of 105, set in 2010-11, is in grave danger of being surpassed by both Notts and Wrexham, who are closing on three figures with a quarter of the season still left to play.

Another long-standing record under serious threat is most Wins in a Season. With the total of 31, first achieved by Aldershot Town in 2007-08, has stood for 15 years. County, currently with 25, need just seven wins from 12 games to take the record outright, while Wrexham need eight from 14.

Both Langstaff and Mullin are in pursuit of Ricky Miller’s incredible total of 40 goals for Dover Athletic back in 2016/17.

THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

Four Division One games played on the Tuesday saw two home wins and two draws Folland Sports and Totton & Eling ended goalless whilst Petersfield Town shared two goals and the points with Fleetlands.

A single goal saw Newport IOW maintain top spot with Downton’s win putting them back in the frame for the play offs at the expense of Hamworthy Recreation.

However Wednesday evening saw Andover New Street win and move them into second spot and close the gap on the Island side.

Fawley ran in three without reply against East Cowes, with Millbrook also bagging the points in a 5-1 win over Ringwood Town at Test Park.

The top of Division One on Saturday saw Newport defeat Andover New Street hitting four without reply. New Street slip two places because New

Milton Town and Petersfield Town both hit wins. The former at Andover Town despite going behind; the latter at home against Verwood Town 3-1, with it being 1-0 as we hit the 89th minute.

With both Downton and Hamworthy Recreation picking up points again- the Robins 2-0 on the Island and Rec hitting Ringwood with five second strikes in a 5-0 victory; the play off spots are certainly too close to call.

Even the champions is still a difficult call.

The basement clash saw Amesbury Town win 2-0 but are still in the bottom two with six points separating the next five sides. Close here as well.

Just two gates over the hundred mark in Division One, 142 at Newport and 179 at Petersfield.
