The driving factor for the design was to create a familiar form to the exterior of the house, while creating a radically different form on the interior. The form and shape of the home, provides a clear reading to anyone regardless of age, and social status. Yet there is a danger to using nostalgia to influence design, resulting in such architecture as Post modernism. In Anthony Vidler’s Essay, Architecture of the Uncanny, Vidler comments that this nostalgia without reason or substance often results in buildings with an uncanny nature, just as unfamiliar as the International Style Modern Houses. According to Dennis Scott Brown however, there are merits to looking at popular culture to see how the mass media portrays architecture. As discussed earlier, television shows often portray single family homes with a familiar suburbans scheme.
Both arguments lead to Peter Eisenman theory of the interiority versus exteriority of Architecture. By limiting the profile on the design to a simplified gable house, without ornament or embellishment, the project is able to have respectfully communicate with the existing buildings. This barrier allows for the interiority of the project to be free expressed. The interior expresses an aggressive faceted form, that contrasts with the simple exterior facade and mundane neighbors. Whenever the interior volume punctures the exterior facade, the interior volume becomes glazing creating windows and skylights. The exterior shell contains remnants of its creation, with sections underneath the glazing removed to allow for the shell to slip of the interior volume. In summary, this project was an exploration on how Architecture can respond to its context without being restricted by it.
MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA FALL-WINTER 2017 KIP DICKSON SKETCH UP, ENSCAPE, ADOBE SUITES
1
The Multi-Family Housing project was an exploration on creating a unique community for the densifying West Hollywood area. By making the building vertical, and having two story units, the amount of shared social spaces was increased greatly. The massing of the building on the north side of the property creates a pocket park between the new project and existing single family housing responding to the needs of the community. The park has large planters, and submerged patios which allow for public and private gathering spaces inside of it. Also, there are pockets where light can travel down into the parking garage where trees can grow, allowing for a visible connection into the garage. Each unit has a unique floor plan with special views to the Santa Monica mountains and to downtown. The units vary in square footage because of the wide
variety of populations living in West Hollywood, and by providing a wide array of options, the project can be more accessible. Each unit receives both a north and south view, as well as private balconies. The use of sliding wooden panels allows for the ability to change the transparency of the units, and allows for a change in privacy.

This project dealt with a small site and large programming requirements, as well as a strong campus identity. In order to respect the existing architecture, the position of the site is set back to the South-East corner of the site, and the organized into a tower parti. The Tower is broken up into a lower performance volume and an upper practice volume. This lower volume is of the same scale of the existing architecture, and allows for a communication between the new and the existing. The tower is organized around a nine square grid, with circulation in the top right corner and the center. Public social space acts as datums, providing large open gathering areas on the first and fourth floors. The plaza of the existing building is brought to the entrance of the tower, proving both a visual and physical connection with the campus. A large natural grove
of trees on the south side of the property allows for a foreground to the facade that softens its mass. People attending the Recital Hall enter using a grand staircase, which brings them into the large atrium, then into a vestibule with glass overlooking the northern end of the site. The main goal was to create an efficient design that creates an interesting dialogue between new and existing, as well as private and public spaces.
