Project for a school complex Cesena, 2008-2009
laboratory of architecture design III - prof. Emanuel de Las Casas The theme developed by the Laboratory of Architectural Design III, taught by the professor of “Escuela Politecnica de Madrid Manuel de las Casas, consisted in the creation of a school campus for the city of Cesena, situated in the urban area between the slopes of the hill Garampo and the river Savio. The functional program involved the creation of three educational centres, with different destinations and features, as a kindergarten, an elementary school, a Junior High School, and a Gym and common services. Higher is the age of the children wider is the opennes of the buildings. Thus the kindergarten is a closed flat block with a court inside, to protect the children in a safe place, while the elementary school and the junior high school are more opened toward the slopes of the hills behind them. The gym is designed to be flexible and to be used both for events and plays by the alumns and by citizens and the town community

Museum of Roman Navy in the archaeological area in Classe Ravenna (I), 2008-2009 final master’s degree thesis
The theme developed in the master’s degree thesis, consisted in the enhancement of the archaeological site of Classe, the area where were found the remains of the ancient port of the city of Ravenna. The whole archaeological area extends itself for a length of three km in a narrow band between the railway and the Adriatic Highway. Inside, in addition to the portchannel, were also found other sites of relevant importance, such as the basilica of San Severo and Petriana, and other fragments of walls of the lost city of Classis. The project aim was to equip the site of facilities that would enable both the enjoyment and understanding, as well as space to host exhibitions and exhibitions related to the site, with space for researchers and for activities related to research.

Museographic system in Villa Adriana Tivoli (I), 2009
premio piranesi - prix de rome The main topic of the project was the plan for a museum set in Villa Adriana, the famous villa of the emperor Hadrian. The competition required the creation of exhibition spaces for a permanent and a temporary collection, and the establishment of areas designed to research and study all the antiquities found in the site, which can also accommodate archaeologists, experts, and the resulting congressional events. The museum of the permanent collection is located on the “terrace of the libraries” and aims to redefine the border which divided the libraries by the lost garden that used to lie in the lower terrace. The temporary collection, instead, is placed above the “hundred rooms”, where there was a lost porch that was perceptible from the driveway to the villa. Finally, the laboratories and the multi purpose space lie over the Antiquarium, beside the famous “Canopus”. Here, where once was located a lost building, there are a number of pure volumes covered by a unique roof.

Project for the monumental area of Athens Athens (GR), 2011
master’s degree workshop
The main purpose of the master’s workshop was to create a new access and paths for the Acropolis, to include the visit of the sites located at the foot of the cliff, often not sufficiently considered by tourists. The current access, created by Pikionis, does not include these monuments and areas, used mainly as neglected deposit for archaeologic fragments, and it is located far from the metro station and the new museum designed by Tschumi. The new access is thus moved in this part of the city, just in front of the metro entrance, between the Acropolis museum and the Theatre of Dionysus, in order to encourage the visit of the monumental area as a segment of a longer tourist path which starts and ends out of it. The new path runs in a meandering along the slopes of the Acropolis, allowing a gradual discovery. The Acropolis in this way “must be conquered” slowly, to guarantee a better and more complete understanding of all its parts.

Museum of Theodoric’s Palace Ravenna (I), 2011
private master’s degree thesis The aim of the final thesis of the Master’s Degree consisted in the design of an archaeological museum concerning the ruins and the mosaics of the Palace of Theodoric (Vth century), excavated in the early 900 and now buried. The aims of the project focused on reopening the site not only for culture purpose but also for public use, thus using the archeology as an opportunity for the re-development of an important part of the city. Following the excavation was first identified the site of the Palace. The Palace consisted of a colonnaded square courtyard, having on the north side the monumental halls, while on the south side there were the baths and private areas. The remains were then covered, and today only a portion of them is to dig again. Since the Palace was located along the ancient coast, it was decided to use the area of the old beach to insert an archaeological crypt, where replace the large number of mosaics removed during excavations.

Multifunctional Centre in Sappada Sappada (I), 2013
competition at mijic architects Laying on a mountain slope, leaning towards the Piave valley and and the attractive Dolomites skyline, the project consist in trying to link the urban dimension (where the site is set) and the landscape itself, using the slope of the terrain. The functional program is focused on the integration of a series of activities, quite different from each other, but all aimed at providing services for citizens. Underground there is a parking with emergency spaces. At the ground level is located a elderly center, which is organized around a central square, lighted by a polygonal hole in the ceiling. The upper level hosts a kindergarten, which embrace a large courtyard that integrates with the terrain slopes coming from the mountain. Above the kindergarten, the building changes connotation and is designed as a massive volume with sharp edges, as it would have been cut by blade. The entire volume is designed reinterpreting the traditional local houses, and is characterized by local materials.

Conversion of a barn-building into an experimental theatre Aarau (CH), 2011
competition at mijic architects The aim of the competition consisted in the renovation of a disused barn, in the middle of the dense town of Aarau, into an experimental theatre organized in two extremely flexible theatres. The competition includes the chance to operate on a smaller barn set in the backyard, which was allowed to be demolished and replaced by a new building. The main building consists of a single large room covered by a single and continuous roof made of a complex system of trusses with diagonal supports. Since the very beginning the project approach consisted in trying to connect the opposite sides of the building through an internal passage, which crosses the barn with a tunnel system and split into two parts the wide hall. This tunnel-building has the role not only of connection between the opposite sides of the building, but also of foyer in common of the two theatres. This concept then allows to integrate the urban topic to the technical one, resulting from the necessity of an experimental building.

Congress Centre in Padova Padova (I), 2011
preliminary design at mijic architect The growing economic importance and strategic location of the city of Padova have encouraged local institutions and private investors to build a congress centre related to the local fair. It was thus decided to create, in place of the 10th Pavillion, a new iconic building, with a strong and recognizable image, able to give identity to an area of the city which large infrastructure in recent years have converted into a new town gate. Within this new building are provided all the usual services of modern congress centres. The heart of the intervention is constituted by the large central area as high as the entire building, which allows, through a wide stairway, the distribution of visitors in the various lobby and, consequently, on the corresponding theatres. Two suspended sculptural volumes (containing the conference halls) emerge radially from the building, while the most important element is the large plenary hall, designed to accommodate 1600 people and designed to be divided into 6 smaller rooms.

“House of the Future”, exposition pavillion of the German technological progress Berlin (D), 2012
competition at mijic architects The competition consisted in conceiving of a place to show, as in a shop window, the progress and scientific and technological inventions made by the German research and industry. The purpose of the building led to the decision to design a prominent element in the context, able to intrigue and attract the visitors and, at the same time, establish itself in the surrounding context as a building with strong and iconic image. From this consideration resulted the choice to shape the building as a semi-transparent cube, whose plan development follows the idea of the rectangular spiral. This conformation, in fact, allows not only to separate functionally the parts of stairs and elevators from the exposition’s one. The rest of the triangular plot is characterized as a series of urban plazas. In the basement are located the warehouses of exposure, directly connected with elevators to the exhibition floors. In the ground floor is located in the cafeteria and all the receiving spaces. On the south-east there is the full heigh space occupied by the stairs, open to the landscape of the Tiergarten, and towards the square.

Scientific Centre for Research on Carbon Fibers TZA Augsburg (D), 2012
competition (II phase selected) at mijic architects The aim of the competition consisted in planning a centre for research on carbon fibers in the southern part of the “engineering campus, a large area which will house the university campus of Augsburg. The project covers three lots, only one of which must be investigated in detail. The research centre consists of three major function: production halls, accompanied by workshop and laboratories, offices and public spaces. The intervention must be able to be realised in two stages. For this reason the whole project has been thought with a basic scheme for both parts of the building, in order to draw near them in successive stages without loosing the sense of unity and completeness of the building. In this scheme the great halls are thought as the centre around which are set all the other facilities. The ground level host workshop and laboratories, while in the upper level the offices create two L blocks, which define the main fronts. The two parts are offset each other, in order to create an entrance for the trucks on one side and, on the opposite side, a lower block containing the common areas and reception.

“Grüne Mitte Ruit”, a new urban centality for Ostfildern Ostfildern (D), 2012
design competition, mentioned, individual profession The aim of the competition was to design a new centre for the village of Ruit, in the municipality of Ostfildern. This town does not have a central point in hierarchy in which the community can identify and collect. The project area consists of a long urban void, sandwiched between the two roads along which the houses were built. The aim was to mend the relationship between a road and the other through connections consisting in paths, parks, squares and public facilities which characterize each part of the project with specific functions. The competition announcement emphasizes the character of the new intervention for all members of society, from young to old, with a particular focus on the multigenerational and flexible quality of space. Overriding importance should be given to the issue of green. The title of the announcement it states clearly: a new green heart for Ruit. The main element of the whole project is the so-called binary, or a green band contained between two pedestrian and cycle paths.

design competition, mentioned, individual profession The purpose of the competition was to combine the technological aspects related to the retrofit with the aesthetic of the architectural renewal. The project was then considered beyond two point of view. On the technical level we proceeded to insulate the outer shell both in the vertical walls and the horizontal and inclined planes. On the roof were placed photovoltaic panels and windows were protected from the sun with protruding metal curter. On the aesthetic level, however, it was decided to remove all decorations from the walls, to make the building more simple and elegant. The north block, which is the entrance faรงade and the only one visible from the road, was covered with a second skin made of corrugated iron, carved with an irregular rhythm of openings to allow the lighting of the windows, but providing a more dynamic and iconic image to the building.

After winning the design competition we proceeded to realize the executive design and then the construction of the expansion of the elementary school of Bagnara di Romagna. Compared to the original project, which was a building on one L-shaped floor, the final result was a compact two storey block. Only the second one is currently used, while the first is left neutral. The block is disposed in order to create a C court with the existing school. The aspect of the façades changes depending on the orientation of the building. On the northern side, which faces the court, the upper floor is characterized as a wooden volume, while to the southern is entirely in white plaster, just the upper floor is differentiated from the lower by wooden sliding shutters. Inside, the corridor is made lively and joyful by a white spiral painted on a green background. In correspondence of the doors, the spiral enters the classrooms and create a decorative ring which marks the entrance and make them less anonymous. Ing. Riccardo Neri

Winery building and restaurant conversion in the Romagna countryside Calisese (I), 2012-2013
design and construction, at Laprimastanza
The project involves the construction of a farm consisting of two buildings. The first, a former industrial store, is converted to accommodate a restaurant, while the new one is planned to host the winery. The two buildings are arranged orthogonally relative to one another, but on the front they have the same alignment, this has allowed us to make the same external treatment, in order to achieve unity and continuity between the two parts, otherwise fragmented and very differentiated. In the existing building the topic was the reorganization of the interior, while the exterior was left unchanged except for the choice of the colour white and of a skin of creepers on live cables. The new building, already set up in the traditional form, has been studied also in its outer skin, that I will be made of galvanized corrugated sheet, with long horizontal windows and a shelter that will contain the company’s logo. Inside a long black volume divide the production area from the public one, and will include services as well as barrels and tasting areas.

Expansion and renovation of a villa in Faenza countryside Faenza (I), 2012-2013
preliminary draft, at Laprimastanza The purpose of the project is the extension of a rural building located in the countryside of Faenza, with the arrangement of the courtyard through two service buildings. The main building, the house, is enlarged by the addition of a new unit. Thus, inside the same building there are two independent units, even though the external is completely unifyed and devoid of differentiation between the two parts. The building is treated as a pure white volume in which deep openings are dug, on the ground floor they host the entrances, while upstairs they become lodges. Attention is also paid to the park, which is divided into two parts of the same size from the buildings. On the front side is realized a small wood with a square clearing in the centre. On the back, instead, are created artificial spaces, in particular two square spaces, one raised and one lowered respect to the ground level. Between the buildings there is the courtyard, reinterpreted in a contemporary way, with different sub-areas differentiated through different materials.

Europan 2013
Kaufbeuren (D), 2013
design competition, at Laprimastanza The project area consists of a former disused airfield in the city of Kaubeuren, a small village not far from Munich, Germany. The concept of the project is to conceive the lot as a great gaming table on which anything can happen. The area is in fact divided into batches of variable shape and extension. The typology of buildings which will be realized, however, does not depend on a logic of deterministic prediction, but rather from the case. The con- struction of each lot, in fact, is like a match in a game, and the arbiter will be just the Fate, through a random draw, to decide what kind of buildings will have to be made. To provide a range of chances, there is a schedule of the typologies, with a wide variety of housing types and densities. The element which gives the order to the whole composition is the long airstrip rectangular which is converted into long water channel, connected to additional organic lakes just beside. At the two ends of the channel are placed public functions, while an extensive network of pedestrian and cycle paths allow the connection throughout the entire complex.

TOWN PLANNING LANDSCAPE V A R I E T Y
L’Aquila Hearthquake Memorial L’Aquila (I), 2013
design competition, at Laprimastanza The aim of the competition was to design a monument in memory of the 309 victims of the earthquake that struck L’Aquila in 2009. The site chosen is a semicircular square, placed at the base of a natural hollow, at the center of a small urban park. In the center there was a small circular playground. The shape was selected by the children of the city. Just to resume this link with the past and to give the younger generations the chance to leave its mark on the city of the future we chose to mantain this shape. The monument is a cylinder completely covered with mirrors, suspended from the ground through three portals in corten steel. The perimeter of the circle is thus closed not by “hard” physical elements, but simply by 309 water spouts, one for each victim. At the same time on the floor inside the ring are 309 space circles that light up at night. Some of them rise from the floor and become a seat. In addition, the circle is a very symbolic form. It is a shape without beginning or end, and then wants to represent the continuity of life after the drama. The mirrors dematerialize the cylinder and the reflection make alive inanimate things, such as the sky or the clouds, thus the monument become “alive “ and not materially static.

Redevelopment of the waterfront and turistic facilities in Gabicce Mare Gabicce Mare (I), 2013
design competition, at Laprimastanza The aim of the competition is the redevelopment of the waterfront and of the touristic part of the town of Gabicce Mare. The project involves the construction of a new building on the platform of the harbour and an inclined square raised above the beach level, that allows you to overcome the different height between it and the dock and, at the same time, to have a public space accessible by tourists for events. From this square it is also possible to have a broad panoramic view of the sea and of the coast. From the lighthouse starts a long jetty which connects, with a wide range, the dock with the beach in correspondence to the existing panoramic terrace. In the middle of the jetty an existing building is replaced with a new one, set on a piazza on stilts, which is connected to the beach by an other short inclined square. In the southern part, where the hills enter directly the sea, are set some protruding terraces on the verdant slopes of the hills. The waterfront is repaved and freed from useless accretions, and large open squares are created to allow a view of the sea. Also the internal roads are repaved to give them better quality.
