Andrea Giusa Catania, Italy 09/08/1982 Italian unit 4/ 307 Glebe Point Road Glebe NSW 2037 +61 451 123 969 andreagiusa@gimail.com

I am a graduate architect, interested in both architecture and interior design. I hold a Bachelor in Architecture with honours; in 2008 I graduated with honours in the Master in Architecture Conservation, Restoration and Enhancement of Architectural and Environmental Assets with a thesis in Heritage Buildings Restoration from University Mediterranea, Reggio Calabria (Italy). I started my professional career while I was a student working on my final year thesis. As a graduate architect I was employed by the Natural Reserve and Government Department of cataloguing and documentation. Upon my arrival in Australia in 2010, I gained professional experience working for Tropman & Tropman Architects, a boutique practice in Sydney. I followed architectural and interior projects from concept through Development Applications, Construction Certificates and Contract Administration. Besides those temporary and full time jobs positions I also gained some experience as a free lance designer. In my career I have worked as a restorer, cataloguer, graduate architect of heritage and new architecture, freelance interior designer and archaeologist scuba diver. Specialties: multidisciplinary researches and tasks; architectural design; interior design; urban planning; technology; environmental design; environmental impact, archaeology, survey, cataloguing, history of architecture, history and restoration, structural design, urban law.

My portfolio includes a range of different type of projects. The aim of the following “logos is to describe the dimension in terms of scale for each project. It is easily recognizable the type of approach thanks to the different symbols dispayed in the first page of the papers. 10 different logos starting from the concepts ending into details.

"The terrace at 57-61 Lower Fort Street has state historical signiďƒžcance, having been built by the Flavelle brothers, John and Henry, who were members of an important and longstanding ďƒžrm of jewellers trading in Australia, England and France. The principal house was occupied by John Flavelle, and one of the other two by his partner John Roberts, in the period aĹŒer construcĆ&#x;on. The buildings have State aestheĆ&#x;c signiďƒžcance as outstanding and rare examples of the style of townhouse found in London and Dublin at this Ć&#x;me, and retain many of their original features including joinery, ďƒžnishes and services. The houses are part of a precinct of State signiďƒžcance, and form an important visual component of the precinct as part of the streetscape of Lower Fort Street. The buildings have high research potenĆ&#x;al because of the intactness, and high local social signiďƒžcance through their long relaĆ&#x;onship with the close-knit Millers Point community".

A$TKGH *KUVQT[

The ďƒžrst indicaĆ&#x;on of work on the Lower Fort Street site was an adverĆ&#x;sement that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on 16 March 1855. The largest of the three Houses, No 57, with its smart Ionic porĆ&#x;co at the north end of the row was the new home of John Flavelle and his family. In 1854 John Flavelle and his family had returned to Sydney from a trip to London and Paris and it is possible that he brought with him the plans for his new residence. The design of the three houses was typical of Regency/early Victorian terraces in England and Ireland. The house enjoyed those two most desirable characterisĆ&#x;cs, "prospect", a disĆ&#x;nguished appearance, and "aspect", a ďƒžne view. The houses had four ďƒ&#x;oors of which the basement, like other houses on Lower Fort Street, was used to accommodate the kitchen and domesĆ&#x;c oĸces, including perhaps the servants’ quarters. The houses made good use of their site and of the view from the back across the harbour and up the ParramaĆŠa River. The greater size, high quality ďƒžnishes and porch of No 57 were typical of the details which diÄŤerenĆ&#x;ated it from the others in the terrace. The external ďƒžnish was stucco, to resemble stone and the roofs were of slate.

-Orwell and Phillips ConservaĆ&#x;on Management Plan September 2007

CDQWV VJG RTQLGEV 914-5

The new works currently underway are for the conservaĆ&#x;on of the heritage building and the adapĆ&#x;ve re-use of the townhouse as a residenĆ&#x;al dwelling. New access door to the front lower courtyard which is currently without access. The new access door will be hot dipped galvanised steel framed glazed in safety glass. New opening to ďƒ&#x;oor level of the kitchen window to allow access to the rear courtyard The side widths of the exisĆ&#x;ng windows will remain and the exisĆ&#x;ng sill will be incorporated into a step and all stone will be kept on site and intact if possible, for interpretaĆ&#x;on. The new doors will be hot dip galvanised steel framed, glazed in safety glass in Georgian proporĆ&#x;ons. Window proporĆ&#x;ons will be maintained as above sill levels New JulieĆŠe balconies on the western facade of the extension building, facing Downshire Lane, will give improved solar access and take advantage of the views to the west. The balconies and doors are proposed to be constructed in hot dipped galvanised steel. The upper secĆ&#x;on will provide solar protecĆ&#x;on, sun shading will be used in the form of external veneĆ&#x;ans or louvres. Opening two levels of balconies at the rear and providing folding glass doors and making the exisĆ&#x;ng handrail compliant. Installing sun blinds. 2TQRQUGF ,WNKGVVG $CNEQPKGU

57 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point

Barbeque and outdoor area

designer: Andrea Giusa | location: Italy | year: 2009 In Sicilian art the use of majolica has been evolved since XIX Century, mainly with gardens and rural homes decoration. Despite of the contemporary materials that could be used in the modern furniture, the use of majolica is still in vogue in rural and holiday houses; it has allowed a perfect fusion between the modern barbeque and the courtyard design and decoration of a Sicilian villa. Skills: architectural design decoration and interior design project sink and barbeque design

section and plan of the urban context

Academic project one Master of Architecture - Restoration Graduation Thesis As a final project in my university career, I have studied a neglected and deteriorated monument, placed out of its original context because of all the urban fabric changings during the 70’s. Nowadays the monument is composed by a series of sculptural and separated elements guarded in a warehouse in Francavilla di Sicilia. The aim of the study is the research of documents, extremely important to understand the object real consistency, where it comes from and its history, in order to propose the monument recovery, re-construction and replacement. More in general it is possible to apply the same principles to similar projects, thanks to the philological methodology applied, as well as the stone façades restoration and the walls conservation.

In the Master thesis project a particular attention is given to the study of sculptures made during the XVII century, aiming to identify the masteries in the area. It has also made possible a drafting of an assembled survey of the monument and a detailed description of the single pieces the fountain was made of.

After a virtual reconstruction of the monument, a numeric analysis of all the single pieces of the monument has been done; some of them were physically in the place, others were deteriorated o missing pieces. A study of the proportions and of the symbolism has been developed, too.

Academic project two Palazzo Portanova, Reggio Calabria Portanova Palace in Reggio Calabria is an example of an earthquake resistant building, being conserved after the major earthquake in Messina in 1908. A particular attention, consequently, has given to a deep study of the walls and of the weavings, chemically analyzing the mortars, too. Andrea Giusa

A consolidation project and addition to the existing building have followed an overall systematic description of the cracks occurred, in order to design having a particular attention to the high seismic risk.

The importance of recovery with traditional materials allows the maintenance of the physical-chemical characteristics of the buildings. Moreover the behaviour during the seismic event could give a positive and helpful answer related to the ancient parts that cannot compete against the mechanical and stressed characteristics they will be subject to. The result is not an indestructible architecture, but the best one that can satisfy the conservation, recover and reutilization rules. The traditional building technique, nowadays superseded by widespread use of the reinforced concrete, is in that way handed down, without any consequently modifications of the building worthiness.

Academic project three Francavilla di Sicilia (ME) As many of the rural villages in the south of Italy, Francavilla di Sicilia could offer plenty of inspirations for the public spaces design and revisitation, mainly because of its agricultural heritage and small dimensions. The main complexity is given by the knowledge of the ancient construction techniques and the inhabitants’ way of living. The project investigates the interaction between the built-up and the landscape, through the relationships built between mankind and its work space the land, its relax space “the house”, its play and trade space “the square”, and its sacred space “the church”. At first, the skills developed regard to the physical survey of all the public spaces, the cultural survey of the customs and traditions of people and of the construction techniques useful to hand down a building abacus (usually in the past verbally coded by the main carpenter). Secondly the project has concerned about the graphical rendering of what had been previously surveyed, using software as Photoshop, Autocad, Excel, 3ds Max, to better investigate the spaces. In the end the design of the public spaces has been done giving back the historical phase, extremely important for the site. More in detail it consists of highlighting the later additions to the original project and of a re-design, consolidation project, façades restoration and the new interior design.

Academic project four Lazzaro (Reggio Calabria)

The village of Lazzaro is situated in a particular site full of environmental resources (a relevant example is given by the survival of the “macchia mediterranea, an endemic flora), also rich of history and old houses, most of the times unknown by the population of the area. These are usually resurfaced from the surrounding lands in which farm works or new buildings rising may happen.

Andrea Giusa

The discovery of an ancient roman age house between the existing buildings in the historical centre had required the heritage authority action for its protection and enhancement; in fact the project is about the construction of an urban park going around the area with the aim to protect the site and at the same time to enhance its public use.
