Cover letter In 2008 I graduated in the Master of Science in Architectural Heritage and Environmental Conservation and Restoration; after the registration as a Conservator-Heritage Architect in the same year I started my professional experience in the ‘Parco Fluviale dell’Alcantara’ (Alcantara Valley River park) mainly working on documentation, researches, environmental and heritage studies and rehabilitation strategies. I subsequently decided to move to Rome to attend some other courses to complete my studies and my passions (restoration, maritime archaeology) and being involved in a wider and much more stimulating environment. My ‘thirst of knowledge’ and to physically touch different realities has brought me to England, studying English and occasionally working on hospitality; my passion for Architecture has never dropped off, and my sketches and photos are surely a testimony of that. Australia has come in my mind especially for its distinctive approach in Architecture and its connection to the natural environment and landscape. At first my experience in this country has been in hospitality, to improve my knowledge of the language and to gradually taste the essence of this new space, looking at how it is different from Europe and how I could be involved in the process of ‘making’.

My prortfolio includes a range of different type of projects. Most of them were made during the academic training, except some projects which are in order from private clients. The aim of the following “logos” is to describe the dimension in terms of scale for each project. It is easily recognizable the type of approach thanks to the different symbols dispayed in the first page of the papers. 10 different logos starting from the concepts ending into details.. Clearly, not all my works have been showed in this portfolio, but just a brief of projects range to explain what I studied in my career and also my approach to history, restauration and conservation of exhisting architecture.

MASTER OF SCIENCE in ARCHITECTURE-RESTORATION_FINAL PROJECT
As a final project in my university career, I have studied a neglected and deteriorated monument, placed out of its original context because of all the urban fabric changings during the 70’s. Nowadays the monument is composed by a series of sculptural and separated elements guarded in a warehouse in Francavilla di Sicilia. The aim of the study is the research of documents, extremely important to understand the object real consistency, where it comes from and its history, in order to propose the monument recovery, re-construction and replacement. More in general it is possible to apply the same principles to similar projects, thanks to the philological methodology applied, as well as the stone façades restoration and the walls conservation. In the Master thesis project a particular attention is given to the study of sculptures made during the XVII century, aiming to identify the masteries in the area. It has also made possible a drafting of an assembled survey of the monument and a detailed description of the single pieces the fountain was made of.

Palazzo Portanova, Reggio Calabria Portanova Palace in Reggio Calabria is an example of an earthquake resistant building, being conserved after the major earthquake in Messina in 1908. A particular attention, consequently, has given to a deep study of the walls and of the weavings, chemically analyzing the mortars, too. A consolidation project and addition to the existing building have followed an overall systematic description of the cracks occurred, in order to design having a particular attention to the high seismic risk. The importance of recovery with traditional materials allows the maintenance of the physical-chemical characteristics of the buildings. Moreover the behaviour during the seismic event could give a positive and helpful answer related to the ancient parts that cannot compete against the mechanical and stressed characteristics they will be subject to. The result is not an indestructible architecture, but the best one that can satisfy the conservation, recover and reutilization rules. The traditional building technique, nowadays superseded by widespread use of the reinforced concrete, is in that way handed down, without any consequently modifications of the building worthiness.

Francavilla di Sicilia (ME) As many of rural villages in the south of Italy, Francavilla di Sicilia could offer plenty of inspirations for the public spaces design and revisitation, mainly because of its agricultural heritage and small dimensions. The main complexity is given by the knowledge of the ancient construction techniques and the inhabitants’ way of living. The project investigates the interaction between the built-up and the landscape, through the relationships built between mankind and its work space the land, its relax space “the house”, its play and trade space “the square”, and its sacred space “the church”. At first, the skills developed regard to the physical survey of all the public spaces, the cultural survey of the customs and traditions of people and of the construction techniques useful to hand down a building abacus (usually in the past verbally coded by the main carpenter). Secondly the project has concerned about the graphical rendering of what had been previously surveyed, using software as Photoshop, Autocad, Excel, 3ds Max, to better investigate the spaces. In the end the design of the public spaces has been done giving back the historical phase, extremely important for the site. More in detail it consists of highlighting the later additions to the original project and of a re-design, consolidation project, façades restoration and the new interior design. Andrea Giusa

Lazzaro (Reggio Calabria)
The village of Lazzaro is situated in a particular site full of environmental resources (a relevant example is given by the survival of the “macchia mediterranea, an endemic flora), also rich of history and old houses, most of the times unknown by the population of the area. These are usually resurfaced from the surrounding lands in which farm works or new buildings rising may happen. The discovery of an ancient roman age house between the existing buildings in the historical centre had required the heritage authority action for its protection and enhancement; in fact the project is about the construction of an urban park going around the area with the aim to protect the site and at the same time to enhance its public use.

What is a line? It is a curve connecting all points having a specified common property. What is a “silk-line”? It is a curve formed by a series of lines, which connects some specific points having a precise common property: to be the points of passage of the ancient silk road. As we considered, the passage of the silk road through the countries is not perceived by people; our aim is to recover it, by the use of a simple coloured “line” added to the existing paths, that connects the points (major cities, mountains, lakes, places, non-places) crossed in the past by the silk routes. The far West and East sides are part of the same project; it is something that gives a value and a recognition of the importance of the road the person is walking. The hands moulded the silk thread; the silk line concept is designed using the hands. From Venice, Italy (45°26’9.76”, 12°20’10.58”), to Xi’ an, China (+34° 16’ 21.14”, +108° 56’ 39.14”); from China to the Mediterranean sea.

A spindle of streets and routes traced in the centuries by merchants and travellers. Exploring rich areas and varied landscapes, finding out ruins of ancient cities and new ways of living. From the earth to the water, this unique yarn links the East to the West. The green linear trail traces the past; it is a material indicator of a rediscovered route. It becomes a three-dimensional volume to offer a place to pause and freshen up or for a panoramic viewpoint, a bench to see the surroundings or an oasis for sensing the past. The line captures the metamorphosis of the contemporary city, as a kaleidoscope in which the line reforms itself; after it projects over the skyline or it is born again in the series of urban elements in the city. A vocal tutor, the Aspo bracelet, is designed to guide and to go with the traveller, picking up the wireless signal and giving information based on the exact geographical coordinates. Headphones are connected to lead the traveller in his new discovery.

Francavilla di Sicilia (ME) BBQ In Sicilian art the use of majolica has been evolved since XIX Century, mainly with gardens and rural homes decoration; it has exported out of the region boundaries, too. Despite of the contemporary materials that could be used in the modern furniture, the use of majolica is still in vogue in rural and holiday houses; it has allowed a perfect fusion between the modern barbeque and the courtyard design and decoration of a Sicilian villa.
