POSTER

I took this opportunity to choose a text that I strongly relate to. Over my four years at OCAD I tried to avoid working with something as close to my heart as is Latin America. But I saw it as a challenge and ended up enjoying it all the way from the beginning until the end.

I found that I was particularly decided to play with the “veins” of Latin America. Being from there I wanted to represent the nature of Chaos that my region is living in. The different colours, weights in type and chaotic look were all attempts to represent the reality of the text. After many attempts I changed from my original idea into a more settle one.

After serious consideration, I realized that the introduction of the text was being to harsh and that it was affecting my design. So I decided to switched the text, choosing the same book though. I focused more about sometime I have always been passionate about: The inequality of Latin America and the invisibility we seem to have to the rest of the world. My design changed into a more settle one. I didn’t want the letters or colour to overpower the content of the poster. I worked in black and white first, because as always I think that it is important to look at things in neutral colours. I also experimented by cutting and pasting things together. I find that having a manual element in the project helps me experiment more and leads me to different ideas.

The human murder by poverty in Latin America is secret; every year, without making a sound, three Hiroshima bombs explode over communities that have become accustomed to suffering with clenched teeth. This systematic violence is not apparent but is real and constantly increasing: its holocausts are not made known in the sensational press but in Food and Agricultural Organization Statistics. Ball says that it is still possible to act with impunity because the poor cannot set off a world war, but the Imperium is worried: unable to multiply the dinner, it goes what it can to suppress the diners. “Fight poverty, kill a beggar!” some genius of black humor scrawled on a wall in La Paz. What do their heirs to Malthus propose but to kill all the beggars-to-be before they are born? Robert McNamara, the World Bank president who was chairman of Ford and then secretary of defense, has called the population explosion the greatest obstacle to progress in Latin America; the World bank technocrats (who have already been born) set computers humming to produce labyrinthine abracadabra on the advantages of not being born: “If,” one of the Bank’s documents assures us, “a developing country with an average per capita income of $150 to $200 a year succeeds in reducing its fertility by 50 percent in a period of twenty-five years, at the end of thirty years its per capita income will be higher by at least 40 percent than the level it would have otherwise have achieved, and twice as high after sixty years.” Lyndon B. Johnson’s remark has become famous: “Let us act on the fact that less that $5 invested in population control is worth $100 invested in economic growth.” Dwight D. Eisenhower prophesied that if the world’s inhabitants continued multiplying at the same rate, not only would the danger of revolution be increased but there would also be a lowering of living standards of all peoples, The human murder by poverty in Latin America is secret; every year, without making a sound, three Hiroshima bombs explode over communities that have become accustomed to suffering with clenched teeth. The colours I chose were initialy blue and red because of the name of the book “The Open Veins of Latin America.” But I thought that it looked a little too strong and perhaps to political (even though the text is about politics). I went with Magenta, Cyan, Black and White.

After seing roughs I decided to also try the background as white. It looked better; however I misinterpreted some suggestions and ended up not making the type as I wanted it initialy to be. But I think that the end result was succesful.

SEQUENTIAL NARRATIVE

This was by far one of the hardest projects to do. I had many ideas, and did a lot of process for it. I took pictures, illustrate, play with type and overall I think I did justice to the text of Frederico Garcia Lorca. After all, poetry has a lot of white space.

PHOTOGRAPHS

“Green how I want you green. The passion of this poem called my attention ever since I read it for the first time in sixth grade. I never forgot how it made me feel the first time. This time I tried to put it in photographs, ink was my first component for the images.

17

As I was working with ink, it gave me the idea of writing parts of the pages myself. However, I felt afterwards it did not belong to the original idea. It help with exploration but I didn’t really use any of these on my final book.

18

19

I also tried to play with images, and to show the distortion of the poem and life itself. As the poem goes in circles I thought this could work. But I realized it was not appropiate for my poem, but rather looks like a children’s book.

FIRST IDEA

REFINEMENT Even though my first idea was good, I was still not fully convinced that it represented the text as it should. So I decided to try to play entirely with typography and a ink imagery. I felt that my first idea looked a little more like an image book than a typography assignment. 28

VERDE QUE TE QUIERO VERDE

verde carne, pelo verde

con la sombra en la cintura

ella sueĂąa en sus baranda

VERDE VIENTO. VERDE RAMAS.

con ojos de frĂa plata

Pero yo ya no soy

¡dejadme subir!

KINETIC TYPOGRAPHY

This was a fun project. It did not matter that I had to spend countless hours doing training videos at lynda.com. I was pretty happy with the result and my new found ability to do typography on After Effects.

My first idea was to play with some stop motion. I had done lots of stop motions over the years mainly because I lacked the technical skills to do something in After Effects. My idea was to have play dough and zippers and moving letters around. Yet, once again, I was working with a strong text. I could not let the image become more important that the text itself. So I started again, and this time I decided it was time to learn and do something different, to challenge myself by getting out of my comfort zone. The result: I now know that it takes a long time to do 1 second of kinetic or dynamic typography, and that making sound to synchronize with image is by far one the hardest thing I have done.

This is a link to my first attempt to do this video. I tried to focus on the strongest words of the text. I was suggested to do the voice myself because of the accent I have. So by doing this I memorized the text. This was important when choosing the right words to put on the video. Originally in my storyboards (see last 2 pages) I had thought on doing almost all the words in the text. But when I shortened to the words only, I was able to then play with the words themselves and give some new meaning to the way they move or the behaviors they have during the video.
