CALL 2021 LATIN AMERICAN ARTISTS “The green behind us: Disrupting through art”

“The green behind us: Disrupting through art”

“The green behind us: Disrupting through art” In the context of the current climate crisis, Art Shapers has decided to change its work focus. Therefore, Art Shapers launches its first project in Latin America focused on nature conservation. “The green behind us: Disrupting through art” is an e-book that will portray, through art pieces (paintings, drawings, textile arts, photographs, engravings, sculptures, traditional and popular artworks, combination of materials, and other techniques), the loss of natural richness and beauty due to climate change. This initiative aims to raise climate awareness among the region’s citizens and, in turn, contribute to the global debate on the urgency of taking action. This e-book seeks to be marketed in order to generate income, which will be invested in environmental defense initiatives in the Colombian Amazon. Specifically, through a strategic alliance with the Jean Piaget Institute, these resources will be invested in reforestation efforts in the rainforest. This type of initiative is particularly relevant considering that the Amazon is one of the “hotspots” or “key sites” of the planetary climate dynamics (such as the Tibetan plateau, the Siberian forests and tundra or the Mediterranean valve and its connection with the Atlantic Ocean, among others), whose collapse can fundamentally disrupt the earth’s climate due to global climate change (Poveda, 2011). Considering that with the arrival of the pandemic during the first months of 2020, “the rate of deforestation in the Amazon increased by 70% compared to the same period in 2019”

(RCENI, 2020), we are rapidly approaching “a point of no return for the environment,

climate change and mass extinction of species.” (National Geographic, 2020), today the deforestation of the Amazonian wilderness puts both our generation and future generations across the planet at risk. Thus, Art Shapers is committed, through the transformative power of art, to promote actions in defense of nature that help to overcome the climate crisis.

About us In a first phase, Art Shapers (2018-2020) developed projects focused on promoting and boosting emerging talents in different parts of the world. On the one hand, in Greenland (2018) Art Shapers advised, in the framework of an event organized jointly by the Greenland National incubator and the Government, Inuit indigenous women artists and creative entrepreneurs on how to improve their products and position them in the international market. On the other hand, in Russia (2019) Art Shapers participated in both the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the East Asia International Economic Forum in Vladivostok, fostering debate and sharing good practices in the field of art. In addition to the above, we rescue the exhibition entitled “Latin American Women in International Trade”, which was presented at the 2018 Public Forum (GenevaSwitzerland) of the World Trade Organization 2018. After being declared of cultural interest by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay, this was exhibited in the annex of the Legislative Palace of this country. Finally, in this first phase Art Shapers gave talks at Royal Road University (Canada-2019) and at the Inclusive Trade Festival organized by Global Trade Professionals Alliance (Australia-2020). In the wake of the radical changes in daily life resulting from the pandemic unleashed by COVID-19 in 2020, Art Shapers decided to take a turn in its work. Taking into account that the pandemic is a product of the bad relationship that human beings have with nature (France24, 2020), and coupled with the centrality that culture and art have gained in the current scenario, the Art Shapers team decided to throw themselves

fully into contributing solutions to the climate crisis.
