Snapping hip syndrome
www.londondanceclinic.co.uk
What is it? Snapping hip may not cause pain when it occurs, but the tendon can become irritated if not addressed.
It may be considered an injury if it occurs more frequently or becomes painful.
Common sites
• Lateral snapping which involves the iliotibial band snapping over the greater trochanter (outside of hip)
• Anterior snapping which involves the psoas (hip flexor) tendon snapping over a bony prominence or another (iliacus) tendon in the hip, causing groin pain
• Deeper snapping or snapping in the lumbar spine (low back) which may indicate sacroiliac joint dysfunction or lumbar spine instability
Common causes
• Poor lumbo-pelvic core control
• Weak hip flexors, external rotators
• Tight hip flexors, iliotibial band
Symptoms
You may experience a sharp pain in the groin/ lateral hip region. It is very common among dancers.
Common causes include grand battement, developpĂŠ especially ala seconde, ronde jambe en lair.
The snap typically occurs in the gesture leg. In ponche, the snap usually occurs in the stance leg but can occur in the gesture leg as well.
Treatment 1) Self-massage techniques for the hip region.
2) Modify dance schedule by keeping your leg lower or using less turnout
3) Initiate a core stability program and regain flexibility
4) Address postural dysfunction especially with movement
5) A kinetic chain/ biomechanical examination and manual therapy techniques by a medical professional are recommended
6) You should see a health care provider if the snapping causes pain and begins to affect your technique. There could be a soft tissue lesion or bony restriction causing the snap to occur.
6) Avoid grande pliĂŠ and jumps until pain symptoms diminish
7) A kinetic chain/ biomechanical examination is advised
